When New Mexico Rail RunnerExpress Train 508 pulled up at theKewa Station at 8:08 one morning, conductor Sandra Candelaria gota rare surprise when the doorsopened wide. Right in front of herin the middle of the platform wasa beautiful and eager-looking blackdog. I looked him straight in theeye and said Dont you even thinkabout jumping on this train, saidCandelaria. But there he stayed, as ifhe had taken her words to heart.

When the train pulled away from the

Kewa Station heading north to Santa

Fe, Candelaria got on the PA system and

announced to Rail Runner riders that she

had just met a beautiful dog and wondered if

    he needed an adoptive home.

Not getting any response to her inquiry,Candelaria went about her duties that

day until the following Tuesday when she

worked that shift again. Low and behold,

there at the Kewa Station as if on cue sat

the four-legged bystander right in the same

spot on the platform as he had done the

week before. Candelaria again got on the PA

system and asked if anyone knew that dog.

This time, one of the other conductors

told Candelaria that indeed the dog belonged

to one of the passengers a student at the

    Santa Fe Community College, 20-year-old

Cory Owen. Turns out, the dogs name isRufus, and as the story goes, each day the

loyal subject walks his master to the train

station and waits until Owen gets on the

train before wandering back to the pueblo.

Rufus often knows how to make his way

back to the station in the late afternoons to

greet Owen on his return trip.

As for Owen, he says he was a little afraid

at first when Rufus wanted to accompany

him on his morning walk to the train

station. I used to worry that he would try

and cross the tracks to join up with some

dogs on the other side, Owen said. I really

didnt want him getting too familiar with

crossing train tracks, for fear he might be in

    danger of getting hit.

Owen is no stranger to dogs. In fact, hesaid his family has become known for taking

care of the strays found on the pueblo, and

thats how he ended up with the black lab

mix someone just dropped him off at the

family home about a year ago.

Im a huge dog person I love dogs.

It was my friend who named him Rufus,

    Owen said.

    Candelaria says theres something very

special about a dog that shows that kind

of loyalty to his master. She says all of th

regular Rail Runner passengers on her tr

know Rufus and his master, and that the

eagerly watch for the two when the 508

into Kewa. They say Theres Rufus l

like he is walking Cory to the train statio

again this morning ...Thats one faithfu

    devoted friend.

She was so impressed with Rufus that

when Owen found himself unable to ke

his best friend, Candelaria adopted him.

The New Mexico Rail RunnerExpress is running differently thisfall with changes to weekdaytrains, an addition of a SandiaPueblo stop and a change toweekend schedules.

The changes were made by the Rio Metro

    Regional Transit District Board which

runs the Rail Runner after analyzingtraffic patterns. Most of these changes took

    effect Aug. 29.

One change is that the first northbound

    and southbound trains each weekday

morning are now bus-only services. The

first northbound train which left the

    Albuquerque downtown station at 4:02

a.m. is now serviced by a bus that leaves at

4 a.m. and will go to the Santa Fe County/

N.M. 599 Station and then continue to Los

    Alamos.

The passenger count on this train islow enough to be covered by one bus at

this time, said New Mexico Rail Runner

    Express Marketing Manager Jay Faught.

Many of these passengers who were using

the first northbound train were Los Alamos

National Lab employees who get off at the

Santa Fe County/N.M. 599 station and take

a bus from there to work. With this bus

now going directly to Los Alamos, they

wont have to get off the train and transfer

    to a bus.

The first southbound trip of the morning

from Sandoval County was also replacedwith bus service. A bus brings passengers

    to Downtown Albuquerque and another

bus brings people from Albuquerque to Los

    Lunas and Belen.

Rio Metro also made changes to the

mid-day train service so the same set

of equipment could be used for both

    northbound and southbound runs.

The northbound train will be pushed

back to 9:35 a.m. and will get to Santa Fe

around 11:15 a.m., said Faught. Then the

train will stay there until it heads south at

1:02 p.m. By combining these two routes

into one, we will be saving quite a bit of

    money.

Other changes include the addition of a

train station at Sandia Pueblo. It is located

off Roy Road and New Mexico Highway

313, between the Los Ranchos and Bernalillo

    stations.

We are trying to keep the commute

times as close to our current schedule,

Faught said. This stop will add some time,

    but not much.

Before deciding to switch the early-

morning train to bus-only, ending weekend

service to save money was an option. That

didnt happen, but Faught said there will be

two seasonal weekend schedules. A summer

schedule with comparable service will be

in effect through October and a winter

schedule will resemble the current, more

limited Sunday schedule. The cost savings for these changes is

    approximately $1.2 million, Faught said.

Thats the same amount the Rail Runner is

losing from one of its two federal grants.

The Rio Metro Board gained two,

three-year federal grants from the Federal

    Transportation Administration.

The first was for the section from Belen

to Bernalillo worth $1.2 million that ended

in July. The second grant, which covers the

section between Bernalillo and Santa Fe, is

worth $5.4 million and ends in January 2012.

However, Faught said that grants fundinghas been budgeted for use until June 2012.

But the grant funding isnt the

only reason we are making schedule

changes, said New Mexico Rail Runner

    Communications Manager Augusta Meyers.

In terms of the train service, we are still

learning its true worth. It takes time to

analyze and report the passenger trends to

find out what train routes are used and not

used more than others. From there we are

able to make adjustments to the schedulethat are beneficial to needs of our customers

    and us as service providers.

Meyers said Rail Runner officials are just

now learning what trends are best for the

Bernalillo to Santa Fe route. By comparing

the passenger numbers from last summer

and this summer, officials will determine

which runs are used more heavily.

We cant use the data from the first year

we had the northbound service to Santa Fe

because those numbers arent true, Meyers

said. If you remember, the service was free

for the first three months. We knew therewould be people who took the train just to

    experience it.

Its difficult to predict how its all going

to work out, Meyers said. We knew before

the Rail Runner started that it would take

several years before we understood its true

potential. Having these changes is just part

of what it takes to better understand how to

provide the right service to our customers.

Growing up in Phoenix, AshleyOviedos only knowledge of massransportation was the citys trolleyystem used in the downtown area.

But Oviedo lived outside of the town and

ften had to take the bus to travel into the

    ity.

It was always a pain, the 24-year old said.

Phoenix is such a busy city and the buseswere always filled. And the bus schedules

hanged all the time. I dont have that

    roblem with the Rail Runner.

Oviedo, a Soccoro resident, is a nursing

tudent at ITT Technical Institute in

Albuquerque. For the past 16 months,

everal days a week, she has boarded a bus in

ocorro at 5:45 a.m., traveled to Belen and

hen boarded the Rail Runner No. 506 train,

which leaves Belen at 6:43 a.m., and arrives

t the Los Ranchos/Journal Center train

top at 7:35 a.m.Whats great about the Rail Runner is

hat its schedule fits perfectly with mine,

Oviedo said. Last quarter, I had nursing

linicals at (University of New Mexico) and I

would take the train to the downtown stop.

Oviedo said that before riding the Rail

Runner, she drove roundtrip 166 miles to

    chool each day in a gas-guzzling, 2000

    Dodge Ram truck.

I quickly got sick of driving, Oviedo

aid. I always hit rush-hour traffic and

hat is something that the train doesnt

ave to mess with. Plus, it got expensive.utting gas into the truck when I go up

to Albuquerque) and putting gas into it to

ome home is costly. I would put $40 in my

ruck just to go one way.

The daily rate from Belen to the Los

    Ranchos/Journal Center is $3 for a roundtrip,

50 for a monthly pass and $500 for an

nnual pass. Oviedo rides for a cheaper price

y using her student discount card. She said

the daily bus rate to Belen is $1.Oviedo said she knows of the funding

challenges the Rail Runner faces, and has noissues should the daily rate increase.

They dont charge that much now,

Oviedo said. They give discounts for seniorsand students. It costs me $2 a day to travel

the Rail Runner. Thats cheaper than one

gallon of gas. If they were to increase theprice, it would still be worth the use.

Oviedo, who is six months pregnant, plans to take a break from traveling onceher baby comes. Shell take online courses

during the course quarter, scheduled forSeptember through December. She admitsshe will miss taking the train. She said she

    has made several friends.

At that early in the morning, you are

usually riding with the same people,Oviedo said. So you get to know them and,

of course, the conductors and engineers, all of whom are very nice and helpful. Itsactually nice to be able to sit and have a

simple conversation with someone whileyou travel.

Sometimes she doesnt have time to strike

up a conversation. Oviedo said there aretimes when she uses the trip to finish her

homework. A helpful tool for her homeworkhas been the free Internet service the RailRunner provides.

I dont know if there is anything I couldsuggest to make the service better, Oviedosaid. Maybe if we could we get a train stop

in Socorro? I know that would cost a lot ofmoney.

Philippe Coudert has been runninghis family business in Albuquerqueor 17 years. For the past four, the 92-ear old has used the Rail Runner toet to work in Albuquerque.

I stopped driving on the freeways, Coudertaid. It was something my daughter and I

alked about. Shes disabled and Im 92, so weake care of each other and need each other.

thought it was safer for me and the otherrivers. My reaction time isnt as fast as it

nce was. I guess thats what happens whenou get older.

Coudert, who works three days a week,

rives to the Belen Rail Runner stop for the08 train that leaves at 8:45 a.m. He gets off at

he downtown Albuquerque stop and takeshe bus to his business, in the Nob Hill area.

We have two booths where we selliestawear, Coudert said, of the dinnerwareis company sells. Its a business my daughter

nd I run. She handles the computer work

nd I work the booth. I enjoy it.When Coudert goes home, he said he

akes the 513 train that leaves the downtown

rain stop at 4:25 p.m. and arrives in Belen at06 p.m. He said that one of the best partsf the trip occurs at the Isleta Pueblo station.

I get a kick out of seeing the buffalo at thesleta compound, Coudert said. Sometimes

hey come up close to the train. Its fun to see.also enjoy the scenery of the mountains.

And if I get bored, Ill do the crossworduzzle in the daily paper, or maybe strike up a

    onversation with someone.

Coudert said his outgoing personalitymakes it easy to strike up a conversation

with anyone who he comes in contact with. And soon after, once hes on a friendly level

with someone, a nickname might be created.

Theres a guy who takes our tickets, his

ame is Bobby, Coudert said. I call him themoney grubber. Making jokes and havingun is something that I do. Its who I am.

The ticket agent, Bobby Trujillo, is

responsible for checking the ticket status of

everyone on the train. A generalhello or

hows it been, usually accompanies eachmeeting.

Phil is a very outgoing person, Trujillosaid. People sit down around him and havea great time. With my job, you see the usual

crowd and get to know them a bit. Then youbecome close with them. You get to know

more about them and their families. Its funand interesting. People like Phil make this

job fun, and there are a lot of people like himon the train.

Another reason why Coudert enjoys riding

the train is because it was the preferred brandof travel when he was in the military.

I have ridden trains all my life, Coudertsaid. When I was in the military during

World War II, we would travel by train fromCalifornia to New York. I am used to ridingon the train. I enjoy it.

There was a chance that Coudertsschedule would have had to change the

Rio Metro Regional Transit District Board

thought about ending weekend service butdecided against it, and Coudert rides on

Saturdays. He understands that the RailRunner is going through funding issues and

knows one option is raising the rates.

I dont mind if the rates went up and

doubled, Coudert said. I would rather theydo that and keep the train running. They needto keep this thing afloat. I even telephoned

them and told them they should raise therates. They wouldnt lose many customers if

they did; its too valuable to them.
