Howl-O-Ween Grooming Tips
article by Jarbas Godoy
At this time of the year many of us pet lovers want to include our pets in our enjoyment of Halloween. Some dogs, strange as it may sound, do enjoy walking around all dressed up and some of us even want to add some color to their coat for an extra womp!!!That is when a word of warning is in order. Our pet’s hair has properties that are closer to wool than hair and it absorbs color like nothing else. So if you want your darling little one to be a pink princess for the night of the ghouls, be prepared to live with her in diminishing tones of pink till December. Every year we get the post-Halloween phone calls with distressed owners asking for help, but Halloween only comes around once a year and if you really want your poodle to look like a bumblebee then I have some tips for you:
Use vegetable dyes (as in food coloring), which are non-toxic.
For the details of the decoration some stylists will use body glitter and even some hair gel to shape-up their creation. If you are going for it, then go for it full power.
And last but not least, do not wait till the very day to try it on. Your pooch needs time to get used to the set-set, so buy the costume a few days ahead and put it on everyday for a short period of time till “the big day”.
So go out, have fun with your friend and watch for those little ones bearing gifts. Too many candies can be very bad for our little friends. Have a fun time…

New HorizonsService DogsChanging lives foreverarticle by Dee Hoult and Kristina de la Cal.true Story by Deborah Schilling-Jrade
One of the greatest things that service dogs provide for their disabled, human companions is an opportunity to live a relatively normal life in spite of the mobility prob-lems that they face. There is something truly remarkable about the relationships that develop between disabled people and the canine caretakers that enhance their lives. Founded by Janet Severt, a quadriplegic who uses a service dog herself, New Horizons Service Dogs (NHSD) is a non-profit organization that recognizes the value of these extraordinary relationships and helps to facilitate them by partnering trained dogs with disabled handlers in need. NHSD is a Florida based organization that trains Golden and Labrador Retrievers to perform tasks that will make their handler’s life easier. Some of these tasks include things like opening doors, retrieving objects, turn-ing off light switches and pulling a wheelchair. Once the dogs have successfully completed NHSD’s training pro-gram, they are given to disabled individuals throughout the state at no cost. Depending on factors related to their temperament and abilities, service dogs are trained to

work either in private homes or in places like adult living facilities and nursing homes. The training for future service dogs, which gen-erally takes about 18 months, is provided by volunteers known as weekend puppy raisers and also by prison inmates who participate in a special program that was developed in collaboration with the Florida Department of Corrections. Qualified NHSD instructors provide both the volunteers and the inmates with instruction on how to properly train the puppies. The inmates work with the puppies on everything from basic housetraining to teach-ing them more complex behaviors like how to navigate around a wheelchair. Weekend puppy raisers, on the oth-er hand, focus on socializing the puppies by introducing them to public places like grocery stores, shopping malls, doctor’s offices and other places to which the dogs will eventually accompany their disabled handlers.
NHSD is always looking for more weekend puppy raisers and other volun-teers that can help by transporting puppies to vet visits and other neces-sary trips. To learn more about how you can get involved, please visit the
NHSD website at http://www.newhorizonsservicedogs.org or call the NHSD office at (386) 456-0408.
Ten years ago I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. A couple of years later I applied for a Mobility Assistance dog at New Horizons. I was amazed when they told me that there was a 3-year waiting list for a dog. Finally, one day, I got a call; they had a dog for me! I was so excited I couldn’t sleep. The next step was to go to New Horizons for training. When I arrived I was shown three dogs, but I knew immediately that the very strong male dog named Sago was the best fit for me. The training was very tough, sort of like dog boot camp. There are about 60 commands that you, as the dogs’ partner, must learn. After successfully com-pleting training, I was sent home with Sago. Sago has changed my entire life; before, I was in my scooter chair almost 85% of the time, now I can go for short walks with him. He retrieves things for me and holds my heavy bags. If I find myself on the floor and no one is around, I call for Sago, he braces like a statue and I can use his body to propel me off the floor. These were all things that I needed my husband or my son to do, but not any more, I am INDEPENDENT again! Sago and I are partners in every way; he is my very personal friend, who loves me unconditionally as I do him. The world is a tough place for a disabled person and a service dog. People still don’t understand what these dogs do, they always think that I am blind be-cause of course, guide dogs are really the only dogs that people know. Many times we go to places and people shout for us to leave, then I have to tell them that he is my service dog, even though he is always wearing his harness that says so. I then stand my ground in hopes that Sago and I forge new ground for future service dog

aggressive??Is your dog
How to Identify, manage, and prevent aggression
article by Dee C. Hoult, CPDT
As dog owners it’s important to realize that not every dog with a bite history is aggressive. Aggression is an expression of how a dog is feeling. Growls, lunges and dog bites occur because the right cir-cumstances were present to trigger an aggressive response. Most dogs provide warning signals for a long time prior to a bite. Some common warning signals in dogs are avoidance of eye contact, stiff muscles or growling directed at other animals including humans. Most severe behavior prob-lems surface between 1-2 years of age due to chemical changes in the brain. This is why a dog that seem-ingly has been fine “snaps” to the untrained eye. Additionally, if aggres-sive displays are punished in an at-tempt to correct behavior, a dog’s level of aggressiveness can increase. In 2008, the American Society of Veterinary Behaviorists released a position statement which discussed

advances in behavior research con-tinue to show that dogs subjected to threats or force may react with ag-gression, not because they are trying to be dominant, but because the hu-man threatening them makes them afraid. Fear is the root of almost all dog aggression and under socializa-tion is usually the culprit.
Puppies must ideally complete so-cialization by 12 weeks of age. The best time to acquire a puppy is at 8 weeks, giving you at least one month to socialize. Puppies should meet
at least 100 people before the 12th week. Denying puppies early social-ization is extremely detrimental, yet fear of disease prevents many puppy owners from the process. However, there are many safe ways to socialize an unvaccinated puppy. My favorite is an outside patio at a coffee shop or restaurant.
Because we don’t always know the history of an adult dog, always:

If you need help with your dog, find qualified professionals who use positive reinforcement methods to modify behavior like: the Associa-tion of Pet Dog Trainers (www.apdt.com), the International Associa-tion of Canine Professionals (www.canineprofessionals.com) and the Certified Applied Animal Behav-iorists (www.animalbehavior.org). with positive training, dogs learn to make choices that are rewarded with food, affection, play or anything else the dog enjoys. over time, your dog can change his emotional response from “that is really scary I should ag-gress” to “that is wonderful I feel great!”

Getting Your Dog
Article by Richard Heinz, The Miami Dog Whisperer
When Called!
The “Come” command is without question one of the most important cues you should teach your dog. Not only can the “Come” command be vital in keeping your dog from running away from you and getting lost or worse yet running off into danger and possibly getting seriously hurt, but a good “come” command also can give a dog a better life. Here’s How to do it.
1. You want to use a treat that the dog LOVES.
2. If you have someone else to work with you in the beginning it is even better. Each person takes treats and spreads out across a room in the house. Then the person that the dog is not trailing or paying atten-tion to calls the dog by saying the dog’s name first and then come (Max Come!) in a very playful excited tone.
3. You want the dog to be very ex-cited about this command for life, so do not yell this command at the dog as if it’s a demand, this is usually a crucial mistake and kills drive.
4. As soon as you say the “YES!” word and the dog has actu-ally taken one step toward you, you should move backward a few steps and say “good!” to keep him coming. This will usually build more speed as well.
5. And as soon as you say the “YES!” word and the dog has actu-ally taken one step toward you, you should move backward a few steps and say “good!” to them to keep them coming and this will usually build more speed as well.
6. Do Not say Come, Come, Come while the dog is on his way to you.
7. Do this exercise in different rooms, in the yard, in an enclosed school field or park. Progress slowly to more challenging situations such as other dogs and/or other exciting things.
8. It is best to do this with a 15-30 ft leash when you start working in grassy areas where there are a lot of smells. When the dog is sniffing the ground you stay leash length behind him and call him. If the dog refuses or stalls, start pulling the line towards you while you call. When he starts heading your way have a party and give him a reward.
9. If your dog loves toys then once he understands the concept you can switch over to a toy reward instead of food or do both.

Should
my dog?Article by Dr. Nancy Wilber, DVM
The subject of having a dog spayed or neutered will raise
controversy in many circles. Un-derstanding the many benefits of these surgeries is important.
Pet overpopulation is the most ob-vious reason to sterilize your pet. In Miami Dade County alone last year over 32,000 animals were sur-rendered to the Animal Services Department. This does not include those given up to the Humane Soci-ety or the numerous rescue groups that tirelessly work in our commu-nity. One un-spayed female dog, her mate and all of their puppies, if none are ever spayed or neutered, can add up to over 67,000 puppies in only 6 years. Having your male dog neu-tered will in most circumstances make him a better household pet and family member. There are nu-merous behavioral benefits. Hor-monal influences lead a male dog to feel the need to “mark” his territory. It is natural for him to want to lift his leg and leave a little urine on objects to stake his claim. This is not much of a problem outside, but some-times this persists indoor as well. Intact male dogs have a tendency towards being more territorial and aggressive. They do tend to wander more often. A female in heat will attract them from miles away. Medi-cally, the surgery will prevent testic-ular cancers and decrease prostatic diseases and perianal tumor devel-opment. In the female dog, the medi-cal benefits are very pronounced. Numerous studies show that having your pet spayed before her first heat cycle will decrease her chance of

developing mammary cancer later in life by over 98%. If the surgery is performed before her second cycle, it will still decrease her chance of developing mammary cancer by over 75%. If she has already had several cycles, it is never too late to
have her spayed. Female dogs can develop a life threatening uterine in-fection called pyometra as they age. A pyometra can transform a rou-tine surgery into a serious surgical emergency. Symptoms include lack of appetite, diarrhea, lethargy and dehydration. Pyometra is also likely to develop in dogs that have re-ceived injections to stop them from having a “heat” cycle and to prevent pregnancy. Intact female dogs can experience false pregnancy which can lead to nesting, milk develop-ment and behavioral changes that can be distressing to both you and your pet.
You might have heard that the surgery will make your pet fat. There is nothing inherent in the surgery that causes weight gain. Your pet’s basal metabolic rate will change after the surgery so it can be necessary to decrease their ca-loric intake. The surgery is recom-mended at 6 months of age in most circumstances. Many puppies are experiencing a dramatic decline in their growth rate and need to be fed fewer calories at this age regardless of whether or not they are spayed or neutered. As with any surgery, it is im-portant to discuss the details of the procedure and the necessary pre anesthetic requirement with your veterinarian.
Numerous studies show that having your pet spayed before her first heat cycle will decrease her chance of developing mammary cancer later in life by over 98%.

So what is agility?Article by gustavo Dib
Agility is an exciting dog sport that challenges both dog and handler to go through an obstacle course similar to that of an equine jumping course.
Encouraging competition, the sport is open to all dogs, purebreds as well as mixed breeds, and helps to develop a strong bond between handler and dog. Participating in agility is a good way to have fun with your pet while enjoying the unique relationship that exists between you and your four-legged friend. If you ask me: what kind of activity should I practice with my dog? I will encourage you to try Agility. It is the most exciting sport you can practice with your four-legged friend. One of the great things about agility is that it gives dogs and their owners the opportunity to compete at the level that best suits them, which is determined by the dog’s size and level of training. With such a wide variety of classes to compete in, you and your dog are sure to have an enjoyable time. Imagine how much fun it is to go and have your best friend go over jumps, run through tunnels, climb A-frames and dominate tee-ter totters and weave poles. Most importantly, agility training is done through positive reinforcement so dogs like going to training and competitions. Many agility competitors begin practic-ing the sport just for fun and to enjoy an afternoon with their pet. However, as time goes by and they become more involved in the techniques, speed and challenges that the sport brings, they eventu-ally get bitten by the agility bug. Today, there are

many Americans who have made agility their main hobby and sport. Agility was introduced to the USA in the mid 80’s, and we can trace demonstrations back to the 70’s in the UK. The sport has be-come a favorite activity for many differ-ent kennel clubs and for the National Ca-nine Federations from various countries. The most prestigious agility competition is the FCI (Federation Cynologique Inter-nationale) Agility World Championships in which teams of different nations par-ticipate. This year’s event will be held in Rieden, Germany on October 1-3.
We encourage trying Agility at your local obedience and agility club. We are sure you and your beloved dog will have the time of your lives. Sad but true, Miami- Dade County Animal Services impounded over 37,000 ani-mals in 2009 with approximately just under 8,000 left alive. Paws 4 You Rescue makes a difference by goinges into local schools and Rotary Clubs to speak, has partnering with Girl and Eagle Scouts for their various events to earn awards, attending and support-ing numerous community events and continuing to network on a daily basis in order to educate the public.

pups their forever homes. That means finding the right “match” for both the adopter and the pet. Certain dogs will make lovely companions, yet they may need an assertive and experienced owner so we take that into consideration. A couple trying to adopt a very young puppy for their three year old child would not be a good match. Our Seniors 4 Seniors Program helps many hu-man seniors battle life changes and loneliness by match-ing them with an older canine. For these older people, our volunteers can assist with the canines’ medical needs, transports and food as needed. We will decline adoptions if we strongly feel in our hearts that the environment is not the best for the pet. So, yes, we pride ourselves as be-ing Match Makers and I hope that we are all blessed from heaven with good thoughts!
The South Florida Veterinary Foundation awarded Carol “Volunteer Pet Hero” at the 2009 People Pets & Vets Awards Luncheon for her extraordinary dedication to the animals and her constant one-on-

If you have always wanted to have some fun by playing dress up with your dog, there is no better time to do so than Halloween. DogsAreOk suggests these wicked locations for the occasion:
kkSoutH BeaCH For a howling good time, we recommend heading to Lincoln Road on South Beach. The crowds that haunt this pedestrian mall on the scariest day of the year come decked out in very original and fear inspiring costumes. Bring your camera!
kkMIaMI Dog friendly Coconut Grove, closes a couple of blocks around Commodore Plaza and Cocowalk where the streets become flooded with swarms of people and pets dressed in a wide array of inventive costumes. From comical to bizarre to downright shocking, the outfits worn by both the two and four-legged community here are sure to entertain.
ImportAnt tIpS • If your dog is not a people’s dog or very friendly, you should probably opt for playing dress up at home, taking some pictures and sending them to us instead. • If you are going to head out on the town with your pooch, be sure to get early enough to beat the crowds. •Bring along doggy bags and water to keep him hydrated. • Never leave a small dog on the floor she could be trampled on.• When choosing a costume make comfort a top priority since you will be doing a lot of walking.

Wrestling starIsis The Amazon
article by Laura Díaz
Lindsay Hayward, a.k.a, Isis The Amazon, was 6 foot at age 9, and 6’9” by the age of 13. Growing up in California, she excelled at playing sports, including basketball, which earned her a University of Virginia scholarship to play for the Virginia Cavaliers. But it wasn’t until she moved to Miami, FL to pursue a career in wrestling, modeling, and her true passion, action film acting, that her exceptional height started to pay off. When she is not fighting in the ring, or posing in front of the camera, Lindsay likes to cuddle at home with her three rescued Boston Terriers and fostered Bulldog mix.“ I rescued an English Bulldog mix, 4 month old puppy from the streets of Miami.... It is such a blessing to have the ability to save an innocent life.” It is not only Lindsay’s “unusual” height that gets her noticed all the time. Today, many
charities, rescues and shelters in the Miami area admire Lindsay’s volunteer work and recognize her deep involvement raising funds for the Boston Terrier Rescue. This exceptionally tall woman’s crazy life may soon be the subject of a new Reality TV series. However, her ultimate goal in life is to open an Animal Rescue Center in Miami-Dade County that caters to neglected dogs. Of course, all of us at DogsAreOk support that.

HISTORYSome scientists believe that this breed originated from the Fennec Fox. They are one of the oldest breeds in America. Their name comes from the State of Chihuahua in Mexico, where the earliest specimens of the breed were found. They were pets to royalty and the upper classes of the Aztecs.
EARSChihuahuas have radar-dish ears that help them get rid of excessive body heat and identify predators and prey.
EYESChihuahuas are well known for their large black eyes that sometimes seem to pop out.
HEADIt can be apple or deer shaped. They have a molera, but unlike babies, Chihua-huas’ soft spot on the crown of the head, stays for life. This breed has the largest brain than any dog, relative to its size.
COATChihuahuas may have long or short hair and they come in a variety of colors: tan, red, black and white. Color can be solid, marked or splashed. Grooming is extremely easy and they shed very little. Their low body fat makes them very sensitive to cold temperatures.
HEALTHThey are one of the healthiest breeds around. Pampering owners can over-feed them, which can easily cause obesity.
BREEDSmallest breed in the world and probably the most popular “purse dog”. Weighting no more than six pounds, this lap dog has a great heart and is one of the cutest companions. They can be an easy pray for larger dogs and wild animals, so keep them close!
PERSONALITYDue to their small size, Chi-huahuas need to be hyper-aware of their surroundings. That is why they are clever and alert dogs and should not be underestimated. This cute creature loves to be pampered and carried around. As a one person dog, they can be very pro-tective of their owner. They are sweet, portable, graceful dogs with a huge personality.
TRAININGChihuahuas are very smart, which makes them easy to
train, especially if you start early. They are good with fami-lies as long as small children learn to treat them gently.
They need little exercise and are definitely an indoor dog.

The Big Apple is an exciting place to visit, and what better way than sharing the experience with your furry loved ones?In such a hectic city, you would think there are not that many dogs. After all, when would people find time to take care of them? Where would dogs find space to hang out and play among all the buildings and bustle? Wouldn’t New Yorkers just hate dogs being in their way? As it turns out, Manhattan is surprisingly dog friendly. The city has many parks and recreational areas, and even the surliest New Yorker can’t resist the lure of a bulldog.

If you are bringing your dog, it is best to come between April and June or mid September through November. Summer is too hot for most dogs (and their owners) and winter is too cold.
Next up: road trip or plane? If you choose to drive, there are plenty of rest areas along the highway where your pet can stretch its legs and have some food and water. A place
to sleep shouldn’t be a problem, as there are plenty of hotels that are dog friendly (La Quinta Inn, Marriott, Best Western, Holiday Inn and Hampton Inn, to name a few).If you decide to travel by plane, make sure to contact your preferred airline and make the necessary arrangements since there are some rules and permits that you must be aware of.

Manhattan can be crowded, and there are certain times of the year when no rooms are available in the city. DogFriendly.com is a good source for finding pet friendly hotels. Note that you can only bring your dog into the New York subway in a bag or crate! Welcome to the Big Apple!Once in the city you can’t miss a walk through Central Park. Located in the middle of the city, it has wide-open areas, and dedicated dog parks where you can let your pet off the leash. While there, don’t miss the statue of Balto, the famous sled dog. ART Marc TetroWorld renowned Contemporary
Pop Artist and Philanthropist“I’ve always loved animals, as far back as I can remember. When I was a kid I dreamed of one day opening a ‘pet shop’. One of my first artistic endeavors fresh out of design school was to create a series of images of Canada to put on T-shirts. I drew the strongest archetypes but the one that people seemed to con-nect with the most was the Husky image. (Tetro´s first pet was a Husky named Nikki.) A few years later I moved from Canada to Miami and it was then that I was asked to do a paint-ing to hang on the set of the TV show Friends. The media attention I received propelled me to pursue drawing more dogs. I joined the HSGM as a contributor in 2002, when they asked me to draw the image that would go on the cover of their magazine and would be used as the Christmas card that year. I continue to have a wonderful relationship with them and have created the poster for their annual Walk for the Ani-mals at Bayfront Park ever since. I encourage you to participate in this kind of events and art auctions to help the groups financially.
We donated over a 1000 prints last year. It’s a wonderful feeling to be able to help out. However, the most important way people can really contribute is by adopting animals from animal shelters. www.marctetro.com
