Cherished holiday memories especially during a pandemic I am so proud of our AAA North Penn Team Members! Many of them are pictured on the front cover in their holiday garb. I sincerely hope seeing their smiling faces adds a bit of sunshine to your day. We all know 2020 has been a difficult year and one that we will never forget. For me, the Holiday Season is a time to not only create new memories but to reflect on cherished ones. How about you? What are some of your memories? Many memories have to do with family and friends or maybe a wonderful vacation. One of my memories is when my Dad would bring the toy trains down from the attic and set them up so my brother and I could play with them. Fortunately, I must have inherited my Dad’s love of model trains. I have included a picture of my trains. My grand-children really enjoy playing with them and I hope someday they will have cherished memories of Grandpa’s trains!

I would like to say THANK YOU to you, our valued members. You have continued to support us during this challenging year, while you and your families have had your world turned upside down. Our great team is here to serve you via our local offices, on the phone, or on our website. I wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah. Thank you for your membership.

Annual Highway Committee Meetings AAA and PennDOT have always held a close relationship related to our roadways and the overall transportation industry. Each year we hold a “Highway Committee Meeting” with PennDOT Districts 3, 4, and 5, all within North Penn’s servicing area. Due to the current times both meetings were held virtually this year via Zoom video technology. Topics of discussion ranged from the condition of our roadways and bridges, current and future construction projects, and new technologies. PennDOT representatives from District 3 also shared new innovations that were recently implemented to increase safety and decrease the number of accidents and fatalities on our roadways. These technologies include automated speed enforcement in work zones to reduce crashes, sequential lighting in work zones to reduce crashes and improve lane discipline, and PA 511 to locate snowplows and current road conditions to improve your daily commute. For more information on PennDOT and roadway conditions visit www.penndot.gov or the PA 511 app. The website offers an array of driver & vehicles services, the ability to submit a concern, information on REAL ID and more.

The holiday season is around the corner. Decorating your home indoors and out is a longstanding tradition – but it also comes with risks. Every year, hospital emergency rooms treat nearly 13,000 people who become injured by faulty lights and other decorations, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). “Playing it safe when decorating your home for the holidays can make the difference between a joyous season and one of tragedy,” said Nina Waskevich, Vice President Brand & Membership. Here are some tips to help you prevent holiday mishaps: 1. Keep décor away from heat sources. Indoor lights should not touch drapes,

Decorate safe this holiday season

furniture or carpeting, and candles should be placed away from flammable items. Live trees should not be near fireplaces or heaters. 2. Take care of your tree. Buy live trees that are fresh and green, and water them regularly to keep them hydrated. If you choose an artificial tree, make sure it is labeled as “fire-resistant.” Never use electric lights on a metallic tree. 3. Don’t throw wrapping paper in the fireplace. Paper is highly flammable and can cause flash fires. Instead, recycle your wrapping paper or save it to be reused. Place a screen around your fireplace to prevent sparks from igniting flammable materials. 4. Double-check your lights. Check your lights for frays and cracks, and make sure there is a bulb in every socket. Discard or replace any damaged strands. 5. Power down before bedtime. Turn off all lights before you go to bed, and set timers if you will be away from home, to prevent a short that could cause an electrical fire. 6. Opt for unbreakable ornaments. Choose bulbs and decorations that won’t shatter and create a hazard if broken. 7. Stay safe outside. Keep ladders and decorations away from overhead power lines, and don’t hammer tacks or nails into electrical cords; use clips instead. Use heavy-duty extension cords that are meant for outdoor use, and don’t overload them. 8. Choose non-toxic plants. Festive plants like holly, mistletoe and poinsettias are poisonous when eaten, so keep them out of reach of children and pets. Even the most cautious decorators can experience a stroke of bad holiday luck. If you need to file a claim, call your AAA insurance agent or call 1-866-AAA-4YOU.

Cold Weather Driving Tips • Keep a bundle of cold-weather gear in your car, such as extra food and water, warm clothing, a flashlight, a glass scraper, blankets, medications, and more. • Make certain your tires are properly inflated and have plenty of tread. • Keep at least half a tank of fuel in your vehicle at all times. • Never warm up a vehicle in an enclosed area, such as a garage. • Do not use cruise control when driving on any slippery surface, such as on ice and snow.Tips for Driving in the Snow • Stay home. Only go out if necessary. Even if you can drive well in bad weather, it’s better to avoid taking unnecessary risks by venturing out. • Drive slowly. Always adjust your speed down to account for lower traction when driving on snow or ice. • Accelerate and decelerate slowly. Apply the gas slowly to regain traction and avoid skids. Don’t try to get moving in a hurry and take time to slow down for a stoplight. Remember: It takes longer to slow down on icy roads. • Increase your following distance to five to six seconds. This increased margin of safety will provide the longer distance needed if you have to stop. • Know your brakes. Whether you have antilock brakes or not, keep the heel of your foot on the floor and use the ball of your foot to apply firm, steady pressure on the brake pedal. • Don’t stop if you can avoid it. There’s a big difference in the amount of inertia it takes to start moving from a full stop versus how much it takes to get moving while still rolling. If you can slow down enough to keep rolling until a traffic light changes, do it. • Don’t power up hills. Applying extra gas on snow-covered roads will just make your wheels spin. Try to get a little inertia going before you reach the hill and let that inertia carry you to the top. As you reach the crest of the hill, reduce your speed and proceed downhill slowly. • Don’t stop going up a hill. There’s nothing worse than trying to get moving up a hill on an icy road. Get some inertia going on a flat roadway before you take on the hill.Tips for Long-Distance Winter Trips • Be Prepared: Have your vehicle checked by a AAA Approved Auto Repair facility before hitting the road. • Check the Weather: Check the weather along your route and when possible, delay your trip if bad weather is expected. • Stay Connected: Before hitting the road, notify others and let them know your route, destination and estimated time of arrival.

If you get stuck in the snow: • Stay with your vehicle: Your vehicle provides temporary shelter and makes it easier for rescuers to locate you. Do not try to walk in a severe storm. It is easy to lose sight of your vehicle in blowing snow and become lost. • Don’t over exert yourself: When digging out your vehicle, listen to your body and stop if you become tired. • Be Visible: Tie a brightly colored cloth to the antenna of your vehicle or place a cloth at the top of a rolled up window to signal distress. At night, keep the dome light on if possible. It only uses a small amount of electricity and will make it easier for rescuers to find you. •Clear the Exhaust Pipe: Make sure the exhaust pipe is not clogged with snow, ice or mud. A blocked exhaust pipe can cause deadly carbon monoxide gas to leak into the passenger compartment of the vehicle while the engine is running. • Stay Warm: Use whatever is available to insulate your body from the cold. This could include floor mats, newspapers or paper maps. Pre-pack blankets and heavy clothing to use in case of an emergency. • Conserve Fuel: If possible, only run the engine and heater long enough to remove the chill. This will help to conserve fuel.

Signs of Identity Theft Identity is a rising threat and a fast-growing crime that can affect anyone. In 2019 alone, more than 3.2 million reports of fraud, identity theft, and related incidents occurred in the U.S., according to the Federal Trade Commission.1 Finding out you’re a victim of identity theft is shocking and frustrating. Nomatter how it happened— the latest data breach, a lost wallet, credit card fraud, or something else—it can leave you feeling hopeless and worried. Being proactive and recognizing the signs of identity theft is critical to help prevent it. With ProtectMyID® from AAA, you can take control, detect, and resolve identity theft with three levels of coverage. In addition to signing up for your exclusive member benefit, here are six signs of identity theft to look out for: 1. Your Household Bills Have Stopped Showing Up in Your MailboxIf you stop receiving billing statements, this could signal that your personal information has been compromised because an identity thief has changed your billing address. 2. Your Credit or Loan Application Gets DeniedIf you’re turned down for credit even though you’ve established a strong credit history, you might have become a victim of an identity thief. Being approved for a loan or credit at a higher interest rate can also be a sign that you’ve been hit by identity theft. 3. You Receive Statements for Purchases You Didn’t MakeBeing billed for late payments for accounts you don’t have, or getting notifications about purchases you don’t recognize is a sign you’ve been victimized by I.D. fraud.

4. Fraudulent Transactions Appear on Your Financial AccountsIf your bank, credit union, credit card, or other financial account show unauthorized transactions, those accounts could be compromised. 5. Your Tax Return Is DeclinedIf you file your returns and receive a rejection notice from the IRS, it could indicate that a return has been fraudulently submitted using your name and personal information. 6. Small Charges Appear on Your Credit Card StatementIt’s usual practice for thieves to “test” a stolen card by making low-cost purchases, typically under $5.00. If the transaction goes through, it paves the way for the fraudster to make larger purchases. To learn more and sign up today, visit AAA.com/IDTheft

The freedom to do your holiday shopping online shouldn’t mean compromising your personal or financial information. In a time when data breaches are making headlines, and cyber theft is a major threat, it’s important to keep your primary accounts and personal information out of harm’s way. While it’s easy to pay with plastic, choosing a secure card—like a reloadable prepaid card—will eliminate worry and limit exposure to potential fraud.Benefits of shopping online this holiday season with a reloadable prepaid card: • Reloadable prepaid cards are not linked to a bank or credit account, so finances and personal information are protected against virtual spending risks. • Using prepaid can help with holiday budgeting and prevent overspending since there is no borrowing money or running up debt. Cardholders set the amount available to spend and reload funds when necessary. • Those who want ultimate peace of mind choose prepaid cards with chip-and-PIN technology and the backing of major payment networks, such as Visa®. Prepaid can be used anywhere the major network is accepted. If a card is lost or stolen, some cards even offer emergency services, like cash and card replacement. • Many prepaid cards offer free and simple ways to access and manage account information. Popular card management tools include online account access and smartphone apps to monitor card balance and transaction activity—anytime, anywhere.

Winter is fast approaching, and with it comes holiday expenses that can add up fast if you’re not careful. Follow these 5 easy budgeting tips to plan ahead and make your holidays as joyful as possible: 1. Organize Your Expenses – Make a list of people or events that you know you’ll need to spend money for. It’s easy to remember your close friends and family but then forget that you always give your mail carrier a gift card. By documenting this information now you will help to avoid unexpected costs down the line. 2. Set Your Limits – Avoid overspending by deciding how much money you’re willing to spend on each person, gift, or event. Setting price limits can also help to narrow down gift ideas if you’re still unsure of what to get. If you already have a gift in mind for someone you can estimate its price at this point; just don’t forget to account for shipping if you’re ordering online! 3. Open an Account – A dedicated holiday savings account helps keep your seasonal expenses separate from your normal budget. Consider keeping this account open year-round to put money away when you can. This will make next year’s holiday budgeting even easier. 4. Save Where Possible – Keep an eye out for holiday sales online or special deals at your nearby stores. Many stores have price-match policies that can help to get you the best deal possible. It’s also a great idea to check for coupons online and in your mail before you buy. 5. Beware of procrastination – It’s easy to overspend when you wait until the last minute. Instead of buying everything during the end-of-year rush, get gifts

here and there throughout the year. Not only will your shopping experience be less stressful but you’ll be less likely to encounter the dreaded “sold out” sign! If you stick to these tips you’ll make it through the holidays with happy gift recipients and an intact wallet! Plan ahead this holiday season by opening a high-yield Online Savings Account from Discover Bank. As you progress through the different stages of your life, you will likely discover new financial priorities you want to be sure are protected no matter what happens. These priorities may include ensuring there is enough money to pay off a mortgage or credit card debt, fund your children’s college education, create a legacy for your heirs, or simply help your family to carry on when you are no longer here. One way to protect some of these priorities is with life insurance offered through your employer. And while life insurance through work is a nice perk — it’s convenient and you likely do not need to apply for coverage — a common misconception is that it’s sufficient coverage for all of your changing needs. A personal life insurance policy that you own and control can supplement any standardized coverage your employer may provide and help protect all of your family’s unique priorities. With your own customized life insurance policy, you can: • Choose the coverage amount and ensure it addresses your needs • Select your coverage length to ensure the policy is there when it matters most • Keep the coverage for as long as you need it — even if you change jobs A knowledgeable AAA Life Insurance Specialist can help determine what your true needs are and assist you in deciding on the right amount and type of coverage to help protect those most important to you. When your life situation changes — you buy a new home, welcome a new addition to your family or approach retirement — you can adjust the coverage to meet your new needs and priorities.

Though we love our pets for the cuddles, love and entertainment they provide, they can occasionally throw a few curveballs at us. Whether it’s darting out the front door, snarfing a stick of butter off the kitchen counter, or coming back inside with a mystery injury after playing in the backyard, pets can’t be trusted to be perfect angels all the time. Here are some real-life scenarios and reasons why having insurance for your dog or cat is a good idea. They could get into your snack stash! One of the most common pet insurance claims is for accidental poisonings. Despite diligently storing people food well out of reach or behind closed doors, there’s always the possibility of something being left out or forgotten. Some human foods are toxic to dogs, such as candy and gum that contain xylitol, grapes and raisins, chocolate, and macadamia nuts. Biscuit and Echo, a pair of Bichon Frisés, tag-teamed a snack bar containing nuts and raisins, and ended up in the ER with over $2,000 in vet bills. After their Healthy Paws plan coverage, the dynamic duo’s pet parents paid less than $400. Without pet insurance, incidents like this can eat into your rainy-day fund.Dogs eat the darnedest things. In addition to the traditional temptations, there are some attractions no pet parent can foresee (or understand). Countless canines have eaten homework and school projects, socks and underwear, sports balls, and other unmentionables. In the most perfect irony, a chocolate Lab named Wilson wolfed down his favorite toy—a Wilson-brand tennis ball. There was nothing ironic about the $3,500 vet bill

Why your furry troublemaker needs pet insurance

for Wilson’s emergency surgery, which successfully removed the rubber fragment obstructing his bowels. An active lifestyle means a mischievous one. The younger your pet, the more likely he or she is to get into mischief. Cables and cords, blinds, garbage, and underwear are just some of the mind-boggling things puppies and kittens express interest in. Even adult dogs are notorious for investigating places they shouldn’t: garbage cans, bedside drawers, laundry hampers. Around-the-clock monitoring is absolutely impossible, and no matter how much you pet-proof your place, an accident can happen. Pet insurance can provide peace of mind so that you can stress less should your pet find themselves in a pickle.

In a time when it’s not safe to attend a typical classroom-style new driver training, AAA’s How to Drive Online is an alternative to AAA Driving School’s 30-hour Classroom Training and has been customized to meet the state’s requirements for online driver education. Thorough driving instruction is delivered through videos, simulations and interactive exercises. Participants can log in and out of the online course as needed and save their progress for later completion. AAA’s dedicated website, Keys2Drive (teendriving.aaa.com/pa) is a free resource for teen drivers and provides parents an easy way to work with their teens through each step, from preparing to drive to driving on their own. AAA’s Start Smart webinar for parents is an optional add-on to AAA’s How to Drive Online. The program offers best practices to aid parents in their teen’s learning-to-drive experience. The need for quality pre-licensing education is prevalent: • Vehicle crashes are still the No. 1 cause of teen deaths. (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) • Teenage drivers have the highest crash risk per mile traveled, compared with drivers in other age groups. Young drivers tend to overestimate their driving abilities and underestimate the dangers on the road. (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) • From 2016-18, there were 51,692 traffic crashes in Pennsylvania involving one teen driver, about 13.4% of all crashes. An action on the part of the teen driver contributed to 35,977 of these crashes, resulting in 214 deaths and 21,689 injuries. (Pennsylvania Department of Transportation) • More than 60% of teens get their driver’s license before age 18, an 11% increase in teen licensure from when the Foundation first evaluated the issue in 2012. (AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety) The program not only delivers the rules of the road and essential elements of safe driving in an interactive and innovative way, it may also qualify those who complete it for auto insurance premium discounts. AAA Members receive exclusive pricing on this new online program. AAA’s How to Drive Online Pennsylvania is available at https://pennsylvania.aaadriverprogram.com/ to AAA Members for $85 while non-members can utilize the program for $105. The program consists of 30 hours of online driving instruction. AAA’s in-car driving lessons are available in select areas across the state.

Mature Operator Courses Stay tuned for updates on the 2021 Mature Operator Courses. We hope to have a 2021 schedule in the following AAA North Penn News. As we continue to monitor COVID-19 numbers and state restrictions, we want to ensure that classroom style courses are feasible while keeping your health and safety in mind. One change for 2021 will be the Wellsboro course location. We are currently researching venues for future class dates.

Prepare your car for winter In addition to annual maintenance, here are some tips to winterize your car:• Test your battery; battery power drops as the temperature drops• Make sure the cooling system is in good working order• Have winter tires with a deeper, more flexible tread put on your car• If using all-season tires, check the tread on your tires and replace if less than 2/32 of an inch• Check the tire pressure; tire pressure drops as the temperature drops• Check your wiper blades and replace if needed• Add wiper fluid rated for -30 degrees• Keep your gas tank at least half full to avoid gas line freeze Remember to keep your car’s emergency preparedness kit fully stocked, too. Before You Start Out• Make sure to clean all snow and ice off your vehicle per the Pennsylvania Snow/Ice Removal Law. Fines could range anywhere from $200 to $1,000; if the flying snow or ice causes an injury or death, there can be serious criminal charges.• Clean your car’s external camera lenses. Remove dirt, ice and snow from sensors to allow the assistive-driving features like automatic emergency braking to work• In frigid weather, you may want to warm up the car before you drive it• To prevent carbon monoxide poisoning, never leave a vehicle running in your garage – even with the garage door up• If the forecast looks iffy, wait out the storm if possible; if you must travel, share your travel plans and route with someone before you leave

How to Avoid a Crash• Avoid using cruise control in wintry conditions• Steer in the direction of a skid, so when your wheels regain traction, you don’t have to overcorrect to stay in your lane• Accelerate and decelerate slowly• Increase following distance to 8 to 10 seconds• If possible, don’t stop when going uphill• If visibility is severely limited due to a whiteout, pull off the road to a safe place and do not drive until conditions improve. Avoid pulling off onto the shoulder unless it is an absolute emergency. Limited visibility means other vehicles can’t see yours on the shoulder.

Driver Improvement Courses for Seniors Completing a course online allows you to work from your home computer at your own pace with 24-hour customer service and support. The cost for both the 8-Hour and 4-Hour is $19.00 for AAA members and $22.00 for non-members. You can register online at https://pennsylvania.aaadriverprogram.com/road-wise/ Driving is a skill that can and should be continually improved. AAA’s Roadwise Driver™ is a course that can be taken online or in a classroom to help senior drivers keep driving knowledge fresh and get the most out of your vehicle, while reducing risk to you, your passengers and others on the road. The course covers topics like: • Extending Your Safe Driving Career • Distractions, Drowsiness, Aggressive Driving & Road Rage • Managing Visibility, Time & Space • Alcohol & Medications • Comfort & Safety Tips Although SeniorDriving.AAA.com contains many driving tips, taking a comprehensive driving improvement course will ensure that you have the most up-to-date driving techniques and understand the latest vehicle technologies. As you age, it is important for senior drivers to know and understand how to adjust for slower reflexes, weaker vision and other changes. Some of the benefits related to taking AAA’s Roadwise Driver™ improvement course are:Potential discount on insurance premiums. Getting up to speed on the latest in vehicle technology, such as adaptive cruise control and lane-departure warning systems. Learn the proper use of these and other safety systems available in vehicles today. As a group, senior drivers are at a higher risk of having a serious collision per mile driven than any other age group except for those under age 25. Drivers in their late 70s have about the same number of injury-involved crashes per mile driven as drivers in their early 20s. And driver’s age 85 and older are injured or killed in crashes at a higher rate than any other age group. This is due primarily to increased fragility that comes with age. Older senior drivers are generally less able to withstand the forces of a crash, so they are more likely to become injured, compared with younger, stronger and fitter individuals. Older adults also don’t typically recover from injuries as quickly as they once did. AAA is the leader in driver safety. In fact, AAA invented driver training in 1935.AAA’s driver improvement courses are packed with up-to-date safe driving techniques and can help sharpen your skills. You can save a minimum of 5% in Pennsylvania upon completing a AAA driver improvement course.

Did you know you can see where PennDOT’s plow trucks are during a winter storm from the comfort of your own home? The routes of these interstate and expressway trucks can be viewed in real-time at www.511PA.com.All of PennDOT’s roughly 2,200 PennDOT-owned and rented plow trucks are equipped with Automated Vehicle Location (AVL) systems, which use in-truck technology to log and share data in real-time for that truck. The AVL unit in each truck sends a cellular signal through the system showing where a truck is located and whether or how much material is being spread from the truck. When plow trucks leave salt sheds to head out on their routes, they have a GPS device on board. PennDOT uses AVL to: • Monitor vehicle movement and plow-route coverage; • Monitor the system during winter storms or emergencies and, if needed, see the closest truck to an area that needs additional service and direct trucks to that location; • Review data on effectiveness in returning traffic to pre-storm conditions; • Review usage of materials such as salt and anti-skid through the various stages of a weather event; and • Interface with other department technology to combine real-time weather and road conditions with corresponding material-usage rates. Motorists are encouraged to “Know Before You Go” by checking conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 860 traffic cameras. You can also utilize 511PA to review specific routes using the “Check My Route” tool. Check it out today.

By Eric Feerrar, Vice President Travel To say that 2020 has been a year of incredible change and upheaval is truly an understatement. As you try to navigate all of the changes, rules, regulations, shutdowns, restrictions and concerns about the Covid 19 virus, did you ever wonder if anything would ever feel right again? I know I did at times, but then I remembered that our human spirit is resilient, and that our industrious nature will find a way to see us through, whether in our community, our homes, or our businesses, like here at AAA. We have seen the pandemic impact the traveling public in ways never imagined in our lifetime. Vacation dreams have been cancelled, and work and family times have overlapped and sometimes become at odds with each other. Our ability to stay connected has become reliant on technology, and I am proud to say that the employees at AAA North Penn have stepped up and not only met the needs of our members but in many cases exceeded expectations as we responded to the changes that came our way on a daily basis. Our staff spent seven weeks working from home as AAA office locations closed to help mitigate spread, and I will never cease to be amazed at how hard our professional agents worked each and every day to meet the needs of the traveling public. At first, each agent spent time helping people who were actually traveling as the restrictions began to be implemented…

When the time is right, we’re here and we careeveryone just wanted to get home safe and sound. We had people vacationing all around the world, and everyone wanted to get back on American soil. At the same time, they also tried to help members cancel their dreams as travel became a victim to the virus spread. There was an urgency to each call, and our professionals relied on their connections, experience and grit to help everyone as best they could. As we begin to find ways to do business in our “viral” world, our agents have actually never stopped being the consummate professionals as they learned how to make vacation dreams become a reality again. “Zoom” meetings are now the new normal, and our agents are working with preferred vendors on screen to be sure we can offer the ultimate in travel with attention being paid to all safety and health procedures. Vendors offer virtual classes to agents across the country so they can apply new booking procedures to your travel plans. Requirements can change almost on a daily basis, but be assured that we are getting updates daily as well – we are always doing our best for you! AAA North Penn is optimistic as we look ahead to 2021. Our travel pros are ready to answer your travel questions and concerns as you again look ahead to the joys of travel, whether for business or personally. We remind you that cancellation insurance should be strongly considered in our new normal. But we also want you to know that it is OK to dream and imagine again – AAA is here for you, and we always will be from the moment you call until you are home enjoying your travel memories. We are AAA – the most trusted name in travel – we look forward to seeing you again soon!

Get to know the “Wild West” in South Dakotaby Steve McKenna Visit South Dakota and savor the state’s diverse charms on AAA Member Choice Vacations’ 7-day Spotlight on South Dakota tour. Using laid-back Rapid City as a base, the tour includes an array of absorbing day trips and some engaging, Western-style evening meals. Here are the highlights.Mount Rushmore Carved into a granite outcrop in the pine-cloaked Black Hills, close to the town of Keystone, Mount Rushmore is one of America’s most iconic sites. It was created between 1927 and 1941, under the direction of artist and sculptor Gutzon Borglum and his son, Lincoln. It features the 18-metre heads of four presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. We admire this masterpiece - which starred in the 1959 Alfred Hitchcock thriller, North by Northwest - from several angles, including a front-on viewing platform and a boardwalk ‘presidential trail’ that winds through the woods.Bison Safari One of the most exciting moments of our tour is seeing herds of bison roaming free in Custer State Park. Bison were a key source of food, clothing and shelter for the Sioux, but these great creatures were almost hunted to extinction after the new settlers embraced bison hunting on an industrial scale. Conservation efforts have seen numbers recover slightly, however, and the park - near Mount Rushmore - is now home to over 1300 bison. Traversing a 30km ‘wildlife loop’, we also spot mountain deer, elk, pronghorn antelope, bighorn sheep and we pull over to feed the park’s cute resident burros (donkeys).Deadwood You may be familiar with Deadwood from the eponymous cult HBO TV series, which starred Ian McShane as the potty-mouthed saloon owner, Al Swearengen. A lawless mining camp that flourished in ‘Indian’ territory during the Black Hills Gold Rush of 1876, Deadwood is now a neat modern town and something of a ‘mini Las Vegas’ due to its glut of casinos. We discover Deadwood’s colorful past - and see where famous former locals like ‘Wild’ Bill Hicock and ‘Calamity’ Jane were laid to rest - with eccentric local guide, Dave Church, who takes us around on an old yellow school bus, while regaling stories about the old ‘Wild West’. Our South Dakota experience ends with a farewell group dinner - a traditional ‘Chuckwagon’ show, where we feast on beef brisket and hear uplifting live country music.

Sun, Sand & Safety It’s a typical day on a tropical beach somewhere in the Caribbean, or perhaps Mexico. The breezes are cool, the ocean warm, and hours languorous. Butlers carry cocktails to waiting guests, children play at a kids club, diners travel around the world without ever leaving the resort. No, it’s not a flashback to the days before COVID-19. It’s a portrait of the present, at an all-inclusive resort. On the beach, the loungers are spaced widely apart. The staff all wear masks and carry hand sanitizer. At the kids and teens clubs, temperatures are checked and new protocols explained. In restaurants, menus are posted to digital boards and accessible by phone, buffets have been reimagined, and new individual takeaway portions have been introduced. With over 70 years of evolution behind the all-inclusive, it’s unsurprising that when we found ourselves facing a history-making pandemic, these hotels were some of the quickest to act, pivoting without pause to become pacesetters in health and hygiene. Adapting rapidly, premier all-inclusive brands from across the globe partnered with world-class organizations to establish broad-gauge guidelines for safety, sanitation, and quality … and give us all hope that vacationing could be safe again. When you go to an all-inclusive, you expect the beach to be pristine. Now, new cleaning practices are making every inch of hotel grounds as unblemished as the sands they sit on. Constant disinfecting of common areas? Check. Air purification and water systems testing? Check. Strict requirements for suppliers dropping off products? Check. If it’s in any way part of your experience or a staff function, it’s been scrutinized and sanitized. For all these changes, however, the heart of an all-inclusive stay remains the same. The luxury is still there—but more innovative. The recreation is still there—but safer. The selection is still there—but with a focus on hygiene. Because even though new sanitation requirements are rigorous, they’re also unobtrusive. Whether staying at a RIU hotel or a Blue Diamond resort, a Bahia Principe property or a Palladium one, you continue to get that vacation feeling you’ve always known. Plus, with reduced occupancy, getaways feel more private and services more personalized, actually enhancing your experience. This era of new health awareness isn’t ending any time soon. But, thankfully, with all-inclusive hotels helping to lead the way, neither is travel.

How All-Inclusives are leading the way to healthier travel.

Bus Tours in the era of COVID-19By Katrina Harvey, AAA Group Travel Manager It has become a sign of the times to watch businesses as well as individuals adjust to the conditions we must manage due to the COVID 19 pandemic. AAA North Penn is no exception – we have developed a systematic response to the needs for safety and healthy opportunities to continue to provide the services we all love – the desire in all of us to travel and enjoy the world around us. Many of you have enjoyed our group motorcoach travel over the years – we plan to offer so many exciting destinations in 2021. But we, along with our Motorcoach vendors, have responded to the need for safety by following many steps that will ensure your comfort, good health, safety and enjoyment as we return to the wonderful world of travel. Equipment: The buses are being cleaned and disinfected in several ways. Some companies are using sprays and misters, a CDC-approved fogging process, or an HVAC light disinfection system. For longer trips, the drivers are taking extra care to disinfect high-traffic areas such as handrails, arm rests, windowsills and restrooms, either at night or in the morning before departure. Face Masks: The drivers and passengers are required to wear face masks while entering and exiting the motor coach and when moving throughout the bus. Some companies may require masks for the entire trip if social distancing is not possible. Social Distancing: When possible, groups of people who know each other will be seated next to each other. While on tour, social distancing will be attempted as much as possible. The first row of seats behind the driver will be kept empty as an added safety measure. Passengers: Frequent hand washing and sanitizing is recommended. Do not travel if you have recently had a temperature of 100 degrees or higher. Do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth. Avoid contact with people who are sick. Maintain physical distancing as you enter and exit the motor coach. And have your mask at the ready when the situation demands its use. These precautions will help to protect you during our motorcoach travels. We want you to be safe and healthy as always. But we also hope that boarding a bus with AAA North Penn for one of our fantastic trips will let you return to the activities that are meaningful and enjoyable for you and your family. Travel has always been a personal choice – and we hope to reassure you that we are doing everything in

our ability to give you the best experience possible. When you are ready to travel again, AAA North Penn will be here for you to help you plan that long-awaited trip that you’ve been dreaming about. Our cancellation policy is flexible so there is no need to worry about losing your deposit. Domestic travel is trending to be very popular for 2021 and some of our bus trips are already filling up. Don’t miss out on your vacation for 2021. Call your local AAA North Penn office to make a reservation for your 2021 group bus trip.

Cruise with someone you trust...AAA Travel

by Linda Welshans, Director of Travel, AAA North Penn The travel industry is working 24-7 to enable travellers to return to the excitement of local, national and world-wide travel as they had always been able to do. Since the suspension of cruises by the CDC in mid-March due to the world wide Covid 19 pandemic, professionals have worked to develop protocols that will enable a return to safe travels. The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), a leading voice of the global cruise community, is developing resources to help people navigate these uncharted waters. CLIA has called on leading medical and scientific experts to outline a pathway to support a phased-in, highly controlled return to passenger service in the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central America with protocols that promote the health and safety of passengers, crew, and the communities visited. Research into other safe returns to cruising have been studied, and they include 100% testing of passengers and crew prior to embarking – a first for the travel industry. Itineraries may be modified to allow for the application of stringent protocols for safety, from start to finish and all stops in between. With support and approval of regulators and destinations, cruises could feasibly start sailing again in the beginning of 2021. Highlights of the core elements include: • Testing: 100% testing of passengers and crew for COVID-19 prior to embarkation. • Mask-Wearing: Mandatory wearing of masks by all passengers and crew onboard and during excursions whenever physical distancing cannot be maintained • Distancing: Physical distancing in terminals, onboard ships, on private islands and during shore excursions • Ventilation: Air management and ventilation strategies to increase fresh air onboard and, where feasible, using enhanced filters and other technologies to mitigate risk • Medical Capability: Risk based response plans tailored for each ship to manage medical needs, dedicated cabin capacity allocated for isolation and other operational measures, and advance arrangements with private providers for shoreside quarantine, medical facilities, and transportation. • Shore Excursions: Only permit shore excursions according to the cruise operators’ prescribed protocols, with strict adherence required of all passengers and denial of re-boarding for any passengers that do not comply.

Protocols for the healthy return of cruisesImplementation of these elements on board every oceangoing ship subject to the CDC’s No Sail Order is mandatory and requires written verification of adoption by each company’s CEO. These elements do not preclude additional measures that may be adopted by individual lines. Measures will be continuously evaluated and adjusted against the current state of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the availability of new prevention and mitigation measures. The industry is ready and looking forward to putting these measures into practice so we can all return to the joys of travel with the professionals who do it best, the crew at AAA North Penn. Call your local office today to get the latest information about cruise line criteria and practices, itineraries, and the opportunities for a return to the warm waters and tropical ports you have been missing these last several months.

Time to fly – it was fine! Recently Linda Welshans, AAA’s Director of Travel had the opportunity to fly from State College, PA to Raliegh, NC through Dulles, and found the experience reassuring and easier than she expected. When she arrived at the State College Airport, she found that all seats, waiting areas, and service lines had markings for social distancing to assist in the safe use of the facility. Masks were required in all areas including on the flight, even though she only shared the plane with 10 other passengers. After a smooth flight to Dulles, she found that the next leg of her travels were in a plane with no empty seats – but again with masks required. Before each flight she was handed an alcohol wipe to be able to clean her seat and surrounding area. She also received an alert telling her that the aircraft she was about to board had been cleaned and sanitized. Linda’s experience with TSA screenings was basically the same as it has always been, with the exception of the proper social distancing being required. “The flights were as we have come to expect as we manage travel in the world of COVID 19,” explained Linda, “but the lack of crowds in the airports was a bit different. We hope that as we navigate through the situation, that we will see a continued emphasis on safety but more and more people enjoying a return to the excitement of travel!”

CDC lifts “No Sail” order for cruise lines We sure have been waiting for good news these days, and it seems it has been a long time in coming. But AAA North Penn received a much anticipated notice that after months of uncertainty, it appears that cruise lines will be able to again take to the water at the beginning of 2021! The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued an updated conditional sailing order for cruise ships that will allow your favorite cruise lines to start sailing in North America November 1, 2020. Each line can now pursue a “phased resumption of cruise ship operations with a careful approach.” Just what does that mean? The list of requirements is long and specific, as you can imagine. Safety and public health are of the utmost concern for all who hope to return to business operations in adapted form, so cruise lines are pouring over the lists to make sure they do not miss any opportunity to keep its passengers, crew and ports of call all safe and healthy. Initially, the CDC is mandating testing and other safeguards for crew members, along with on-board facilities in place to test and assist future passengers. Each line will perform simulated voyages to test their abilities to meet any challenges that may arise from the COVID – 19 risks. Based on their ability to comply with all requirements, the cruise lines will be able to start a phased return to service. And of course all recertification orders are subject to change based on public health issues and trends at any given moment. The challenges are great, but the cruise lines are up to the effort and look forward to returning to operations soon. The industry was issued the “no sail” order on March 10, 2020, and it was extended several times as the virus continued its course. This effectively put a halt to an industry that employs more than 300,000 people and generates $50 billion in revenue each year. Now that the CDC has worked out the requirements, cruise lines can try to return to some semblance of normalcy and have passengers again set sail for one of the most popular travel opportunities. Although the cruise lines have been given the go ahead to begin sailing, most cruise lines have announced a suspension through the end of 2020 and are currently in full swing implementing the safety protocols and guidelines to keep passengers and crew safe when they get back on the water in early 2021. Others have been operating in the Mediterranean using proper safety protocols while some like Carnival Cruise Line have targeted operations to one or two ports as they implement the new regulations and requirements. AAA North Penn travel professionals as always stand ready to assist you in navigating these complicated yet eagerly anticipated times – call your favorite agent today and pack those bags – cruising is back!
