September isNational Library Card Sign Up Month.Get yours today!
Richland County Public Library • www.myRCPL.com© Maurice Sendak
from our director
2 | september + october 2011
Dear Friends, We librarians are a funny group. We have our own little “holidays” as it were—our own insider “cel-ebrations” that give our profession a boost and help to remind us why we chose librarianship in the first place. And two of those special biblio-centric happenings occur in September: Library Card Sign-Up Month and Banned Books Week. The former speaks for itself. It’s
a call to action to libraries and communities across the world. And that call goes something like this: “Get your library card, people!” There’s no reason for you not to have one. If you are reading this and don’t live in Richland County, (I’m sorry for you. I can attest that it’s a lovely place to live.) there’s a library in your community that would be just thrilled to put a library card in your hand and hook you up with all kinds of good books, classes and technology. In our lovely county, almost 60% of our residents have a library card. That’s respectable but it also means that almost half of the people who live here do not. In a world where Google seems to provide answers to many of our questions, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. But with all due respect to Google (and Apple) your library card is way more versatile. Want to download a new bestseller for your Nook? We’ve got a card for that. Want to research your family his-tory using Ancestry.com? We’ve got a card for that. Want to check out 60 of the best and most beautiful picture books for a cheap (and much better) way to spend a rainy afternoon with your child? We’ve got an app—whoops— a card for that. I could go on but you get the picture.
So if you know someone who doesn’t have a library card, tell them how you use yours. You may also want to remind them that the services we offer are already paid for. By them. And if you are feeling extra bold, get them in your car and drive them to your favorite branch and stand there while they fill out the application. That would really make our day—even if it happens in October. Question: What do the books To Kill a Mockingbird; Lord of the Rings and The Great Gatsby have in common? “Classics” you say? Yes. But they are also, according to the American Library Association, some of the most banned books of all time. Banned Books Week (September 24th-October 1) draws attention to a simple but fundamen-tal premise: you should be able to read what you want. Sounds about right to me. There’s something on our shelves for everyone. Even your friend who doesn’t have a library card. Yet!
Warmly,

What is one of your favorite things about working at North Main?I enjoy planning, organizing, and implementing programs for the
young folks as well as the older patrons.
How do you think the North Main Branch inspires the community? It gives me great pleasure to consistently serve the North Main
community by engaging in a variety of programs designed around
the needs of the neighborhood; for example, outreach programs
for storytimes, schools, daycare, homeschoolers and computer
classes for seniors.
Outside of the library, what is one of your favorite hobbies?
My favorite hobbies outside the library are decorating, crocheting,
listening to a variety of music and participating in church
senior programs.

More than 21,000 People Participated. Did We Challenge You?
The library’s Summer Reading Challenge lasted from June until August. We chal-lenged folks to read every day and read a new way. We wanted to challenge all types of readers this summer to read in different places, read a different genre, read in a different format or listen to audiobooks on long summer drives. From reading the newspaper to reading a cookbook – the Summer Reading Challenge encompassed everyone’s tastes.
Did You Meet Your Challenge?
• “I will read at least two books on my new iPad 2 for the Summer Reading
Challenge!” | Diane, Main Library
• “I will read two of my husband’s favorite fantasy novels. He will be flattered
and I’ll try something new. A win-win scenario!” | Amber, Main Library
• “I’m going to remind myself about graphic novels this summer!
They are a refreshing way to discover great stories | Online submission
• “My challenge is to read all the J.R.R. Tolkien
books.” | St. Andrews Customer

Elijah Willis, an antebellum planter from Barnwell, SC, is missing. His family has searched everywhere they can think of and still nothing. They have no idea where he is. And then they remembered their library. The Walker Local History Room could also be called the Walker Detective Agency because we are hunting up lost ancestors like Elijah Willis every day. The Willis family researcher could not find him in any wills, tax, pension or census records.
We successfully solved this case using one of our genealogy databases, Accessible Archives. This database includes a collection of African American Civil War era newspapers that unlocked the Willis case with stunning results.
While visiting Cincinnati in 1855 to liberate his slave wife and children Willis died of a heart attack. The story was picked up by the Frederick Douglass’ Paper and several other African American newspapers. They provided a gold mine of information for the Willis researchers.
I love using alternative resources for family history research. They pump-up the passion of discovery and suddenly we have a “goose-bump” find. Accessible Archives is available for RCPL cardholders from the Genealogy section of Research Tools on the RCPL homepage.
Use your library card to find your own “goose bump” discovery.
