New Pastor Ian Bailey Rougemont & New Bethel UMC Greetings to the citizens of Rougemont and the Surrounding Areas! I am so excited to be a part of a wonderful, generous and loving community. Whether I’m speaking with church members or dis-cussing farming patterns with members of the Ruritan Club…I just seem to witness so much Godly appreciation for one anoth-er. Amidst the violence and hatred in the world, it’s a wonderful thing to be a part of the peace which I find in this small town. I’ve been the pastor at Rougemont United Methodist and New Bethel United Methodist for over a month now. My background is in sales, but I’m truly excited to sell something a lot better than any product or service. I plan on learning a lot, not only at Duke Divinity School, but from you all too! Not only is there a rich history at both churches dating back over 100 years, but I have a lot a names to learn too— like that just about everyone is from the Harris family or Hall family. In all seriousness, I can say this community has already taught me how to demonstrate welcoming love to a newcomer. I’m looking forward to putting this in practice for the person that moves here next. It would be a joy to welcome you to our lovely churches if you don’t yet have a home on Sundays. We have a 9am service at Rougemont and if you’d like to sleep in a little more, please join us for worship at New Bethel for the 11am service. With the special effects of movies, the captivation of dramas and the powerful secular music which we all enjoy…I believe it’s a dis-service if church is boring. Thus I try to make church meaning-ful in a fun and entertaining way (yes I just used the word thus). God Bless you all! Remember When... Back in 1930 up to 1955 (or thereabouts), in Rougemont… This spring and summer with its frequent abundant rains that have kept the rain barrels on my deck full to overflowing made me think about one of my family’s rural legends (urban legends are not the only kind there are, you know), so I decided to share it with you. Long before I was born, somewhere around 1930-31, my brother Mike (fourth of my

five half-brothers) somehow acquired a little baby alligator no bigger than 3-4 inches long. Daddy didn’t think much of this critter for a pet, but he kept his counsel to see what would develop. The alligator—who I believe remained nameless since the boys referred to him as “the ‘gator”—did not fare so well in an empty cigar box with grass for furnishing. The boys decided he needed water, and begged Mama for an old worn out but still serviceable (no leaks) shallow pan to make “the ‘gator” a pond to swim in. Things went fairly well that fall and winter. The critter lived in an old orange crate with a layer of moss from Buffalo Beach (the creek that crosses the Orange County line into Durham County near the upper end of what is now Bill Poole Road), his “pond”, and sunlight that filtered through the screening on the back porch where he was able to sun himself about 6 hours a day.

Spring arrived, and suddenly “the ‘gator” was too big for his pond. The boys dithered about this situation for about a week. Wisdom prevailed, and they decided to move “the ‘gator” to Daddy’s general store to the rain barrel kept out back.

The water situation that Rougemont has lived with lo these many years until the water project actually came to life this year, was not the first time there has been a water problem in Rougemont. Back in the depression years, most people had no indoor plumbing and many lacked the blessing of well wa-ter. Thus, many in the community brought their buckets and jugs and filled them from that rain barrel behind the general store. It was large and low, about 250 gallon capacity, and most people in the community could reach the water with a small stool kept beside the barrel.

The ‘gator continued to grow through the next year, and no one coming to get water seemed to notice his presence in the barrel. Then the rains slowed somewhat, and the level of the water in the barrel dropped. One day, someone dipped a bucket into the water and it klonked. The bucket had bumped “the ‘gator” and he didn’t seem to like it. The ‘gator had to go somewhere, quick!

This time, Daddy got in on the parley about what to do with the ‘gator. In those days, Moore’s Mill was something of a public place. Folk around the area would go there for a picnic on a quilt and swim in the pond above the dam of petrified logs. (According to local legend, the dam was formed by trees washing down Flat River in high water times and jammed together to form a dam.) My sister Hilda learned to swim at 18 months at Moore’s Mill, when Daddy picked her up and tossed her into the water so she would learn to swim. Mama screamed and Hilda popped up in the water laughing, and she swam the rest of her life. I do not recommend this! Many families played on Sun-day afternoons under the trees at Moore’s Mill.

The boys took old ‘gator over to Moore’s Mill and turned him loose in the Mill Pond. This was somewhere around 1931-1932. I was born in 1943, and when I was ten or eleven years old, someone was reported to have spotted an eight-foot alligator near the dam at Moore’s Mill. I never saw it. The person who claimed to have seen it was no one that I knew, and had no way of knowing anything about Mike’s “old ‘gator.” Still, the idea of old ‘gator was still alive in 1953 or 1954, at least.

This sounds like a tall tale, indeed. However, my brothers and my parents all declared this was a true story when we sat around the supper table and remembered when…

Saving Rougemont Train Depot Restoration of the Rougemont Train Depot is moving ahead, albeit slowly. This summer we made a signifi-cant stride forward by moving the freight portion of the depot from previous Station Master John Anderson’s property to the depot’s present location at Rougemont Village. When the depot was closed by the Norfolk & Western Railroad, Mr. Anderson acquired the depot and moved the freight portion to his property. There it served as a horse stable for years. The waiting room portion of the depot remained at the site of the original depot and was then used as John An-derson’s office for his pulp logging business. Subse-quently it was used as well for a real estate office. It was then left vacant in a deteriorating condition. Finally the waiting room was donated to Rougemont Ru-ritan (thanks to Mark O’Neal) and a Ruritan sponsored Rougemont community based Save Rougemont Depot effort was begun in 2007 by Joe Haenn, who estab-lished the Rougemont Depot Citizens’ Advisory Com-mittee. Planning and fundraising was begun with funds being held, through a partnership, by Preservation Durham, a 501c3 organization. A ground breaking was held at Rougemont Village in 2008 with Durham County Commissioners, Rep. Winkie Wilkins, Preservation Durham, Don Mason (owner of Rougemont Village) John Anderson, and Rougemont Ruritans participating. Next in 2010, with the planning and work of Joe and Nor-man Perry, the Waiting Room was jacked onto a log skid and moved to Rougemont Village with the help of Bill MacFarland and his John Deere tractor and volunteers. Some of the volunteers are pictured here.

Page 8: September-October-November 2016 · OCT.- 13-MEDICARE 101 MEETING 7PM BAHAMA RURITAN OCT.- 15-ROUGEMONT FOOD DRIVE ... July & August Fall for the months of Sept, October & November

Rougemont Reporter Page 8

The waiting room was moved onto a concrete slab by Lennie Newton. It was painted and a new roof installed. The front door was reconstructed by Andy O’Shae. A foundation for the freight depot was built by William Stone. The depot vol-unteers built a floor on the foundation. They contracted with Richard Hayden of Timberlake who removed the roof of the freight depot. He then cut the freight portion walls into 3 sec-tions each side and hauled them to the present site. He has erected the walls on the foundation. Next he will roof the freight depot and extend the roof to the waiting room. The goal is to rebuild the Rougemont Train Depot as close as possible to its condition while John Anderson was Station Master. The picture below is the station as it was originally built in 1925. The station burned in 1938 and a station from another location was moved to Rougemont to replace it. Significantly we have no complete photos of the station as it existed while Mr. Anderson was Station Master. If anyone has any photos of the station as it existed after 1938, please contact John Mininger at 919-477-5308 or Norman Perry. Save Rougemont Depot thanks all who donated to the depot fund originally and all who donated after Joe Haenn’s death.

Currently Save Rougemont Depot has sufficient funds to complete the erection of the freight depot and to extend the roof to the Waiting Room section. However, the Station Master’s office must be rebuilt in the empty space between the waiting room and freight sec-tions, including the bay window. The office portion was destroyed when the station was broken into pieces. The inside must be completely rebuilt including the wood stove used to heat the waiting room and office. This will

include extensive repair and replacement of the tongue and groove walls and ceilings. On the outside a semaphore must be built. We make an appeal to all interested Rougemont and Durham county citizens and all train enthusiasts for additional dona-tions. These donations will enable our Save Rougemont De-pot effort to carry on toward our goal. Be assured all monies will be spent frugally. Any donations can be sent to Preservation Durham(501c3) tax free. Make checks payable to Preservation Durham. Specify “Rougemont Depot” in the memo field on the check,

and send to: Preservation Durham, P.O. Box 25411, Durham, NC 27701.

All contributions made through Preservation Durham are tax deductible. Thank you. (If you wish to volunteer help with the depot restoration, please call norman or John.)

Remember When... Back in 1947 through 1987 (or thereabouts), in Rougemont… How many of you who are parents have ever said to your children (or if you are not parents, have ever had someone say something like this to you): “If you put it on your plate, you have to eat it. Take just a little in case you don’t like it or

want something else.” Or words of a similar drift? I did. I have. My children still remind me. When I was four years old, I had been using a little tin tea set of dishes for my breakfast for a good, long time. I had a little plate, cup and saucer, bowl, and coffeepot. Mama would fill the pot nearly to the top with milk, add sugar, and just enough coffee to color the milk a little. Mama usually made biscuits for breakfast, and at that point in my short life, I had reached a time when I didn’t want eggs—or sausage, or even bacon. I had dis-covered butter and molasses to go with my biscuit and coffee. I

was very grown up, you see. My eyes gradually grew larger than my stomach, so that one morning, I put a small pat of butter in the middle of my wee plate and proceeded to drown it in molasses. Not only was the butter covered, it was a miracle the molasses stayed inside the rim of that little plate rather than dribbling over on the table!

Daddy saw at once that I had overdone it, and delivered the dread ultimatum above. He then added, “If you don’t eat it now, you won’t eat anything else until you finish that. If you have molasses on your plate at dinner or even supper, your Mama will set your plate in front of you, and you will finish it before you eat anything else. You can have a biscuit with it, but the molasses is all you get with your biscuit.” Well, there I was. At breakfast, I thought it would be no chore to eat all that molasses. It was. At dinner, Mama and Daddy had stew beef with potatoes and onions, sliced toma-

toes, and hot biscuits. I had a biscuit…and that molasses. The more I sopped molasses with little bits of my biscuit, the more it spread out on my little tin plate. I finally gave up. When my sisters came home from school, their first question was, “Did she finish her molasses yet?” “No.” At supper, my family had smothered fried chicken with milk gravy, more toma-toes, sliced cucumbers and onions in vinegar, butterbeans and corn, blackberry cobbler for dessert, and hot biscuits. I had my hot biscuit and the same old mo-lasses. It took me until dinner the next day to finish that blasted little puddle of black strap!

It was fully forty years before I ever was tempted to eat it again. That was in 1987, when I finally overcame my reluctance. My only choice away from home for break-fast was a biscuit with a thumb hole filled with molasses, or nothing. I chose the bis-cuit. These days, I am more likely to stir a spoonful of molasses along with a spoon-ful of ground cinnamon into my breakfast oatmeal if I eat molasses, but I no longer shudder at the mention of the Southern treat that I first discovered on my grandpar-ents’ farm in Illinois in 1946. Moral of story: Be gentle with your children and their food choices. They might come back to haunt you. Maggie Sapphire*

*A new feature of reminiscences with a moral to the story will be submitted from time to time by Maggie Sapphire, a comic take-off on Country favorite comedienne of yesteryear—Minnie Pearl. Maggie claims kinship to Minnie as 9th cousin, 27 times removed.

GENTLY USED SHOES: Donations of Gently Used Shoes picked up tremendously in June and July. The Summer quarter has been quieter than the Spring quarter, but still quite good. These shoes have all been packed up and shipped so that another 150+ people will have shoes this year. Two different people who are caregivers to elders have brought piles and piles of shoes that the elders are ready to pass along to be used. These have greatly increased our donation. THANK YOU, ALL WHO DONATED YOUR GENTLY USED SHOES! Also, thank you to you who collected and delivered those shoes. Please continue to donate your gently used shoes that you no longer need. There is a very real need for shoes for people who for various reasons (all of them valid), cannot buy shoes and truly need them. People and shoes appropriate to their needs are matched up by the Gently Used Shoes charity. Some people have received shoes who have gone on to successful inter-views and gotten jobs they needed. Shut-ins who need slippers have found that with their feet warm, they feel better. Others have been able to get outside for a little walking or yard work. YOUR GENTLY USED SHOES HELP TO FULFILL A SERIOUS NEED!! Please continue to leave your gently used shoe donations at the Rougemont Ruritan cabin at 212 Bacon Road, or leave a message for RECA at 919-477-0681 if you need to leave them somewhere else or arrange for pick up. !!APOLOGIES!! TO THE KIND PERSON WHO LEFT A MESSAGE AT 919-477-0681 IN LATE MAY OR EARLY JUNE REQUESTING PICKUP OF SHOES! THE MESSAGE WAS WRITTEN DOWN, AND UN-FORTUNATELY A FAMILY EMERGENCY INTERVENED AND THAT MESSAGE WAS LOST. PLEASE FORGIVE US FOR THE FAUX PAS AND CALL US FOR A PICK UP AGAIN!! WE ARE ALL VOLUNTEERS IN THIS PROJECT. Once again, thank you for your help in this project. We could not do it without you! -RECA

Rougemont Extension and Community Association (RECA) RECA has had a quiet but busy summer.

We got a head start on craft gifts for the children who come to the Community Children’s Christmas Party (this year, 12/3/2016). We will continue to work at these through the summer and fall.

We evaluated our participation in the Easter Festival and are planning a few small changes for 2017.

The Spring outpouring of gently used shoes continued only slightly less in June and July. THANK YOU, ALL WHO DONATED YOUR GENTLY USED SHOES!

RECA sent a donation to Red Cross to help with the devastation of the floods in West Virginia. One of our members has family in the area who were able to give us a first-hand report.

We enjoyed our participation in the Ice Cream Festival in July, and were glad the heat was tempered by the nice breeze. Our new building is rapidly filling with Christmas decorations and craft supplies. We thank those who have supported us

through materials donations. We wish to welcome new members to our group. If you are interested in community support and learning and producing craft items, you are our kind of person! All ages are welcome. We will continue to do crafts throughout the summer and fall, and welcome your input and help. VISIT/LIKE US ON FACEBOOK! Rougemont Extension and Community Association. We still meet on the last Tuesday of the month at the Rougemont Ruritan cabin. We liked our time change during the winter so much that we decided to keep our meeting time at 4:30 in the afternoon. This helps our members who have problems driving after dark. It also gives us an extra half-hour when we work on crafts. If we are really going at 6:00, we have the flexibility of continuing on until 7:00 when the Ruritan Board Meets. !See you soon!

Rougemont Ruritan Youth (RRY) The Rougemont Ruritan Youth have slowed in both attendance and activity for the summer with people on vacation and traveling, as well as working. The Youth held a raffle at the July Ice Cream Social. The Deluxe Grilling Bag featured many items from Pampered Chef packed into a lovely bag that doubles as a cooler for grilling out or taking on outings. All the items in the bag were donated and the Youth sold tickets for a $1 do-nation per ticket. Thank you for your support of the Youth both in donating items and in pur-chasing tickets. RRY raised $90 for youth pro-jects. Because of the “summer slump” with so many people being away, there was no August meet-ing of the Youth Committee. The Youth will re-sume at the September 6 meeting at 6:00 pm. We will be working on a recruitment drive for new youth members. Patricia Russell
