Dear Friends,
Talk to any public librarian in the United States about what the profession values and Ill bet you hear the phrase freedom to read. While you may never have considered your ability to read in need of defending, its constantly under attack. Just close your eyes and picture a librar-ian with a red cape, billowing in the breeze and a big letter R emblazoned on his chest. Thats how seriously we take our job as Freedom to Read Defender. Heres what we mild mannered superheroes - excuse me - librarians, do. We provide a wide variety of reading material, covering both con-ventional and controversial topics. We support access to as many different opinions and view-points as possible. We know theres no one-size-fits-all approach to reading preferences or learning, and we want your reading choices

to be unlimited. We have books that some will find offensive and thats just the way it should be. We believe its your right to read what you want and the librarys job to have something that appeals to everyone.
And why is all this variety and diversity in read-
ing material important? Because a free society depends on your freedom to read, seek information and new ideas, and to explore conflicting opinions. These activities just hap-pen to be protected by the Constitution. Lately, Ive been thinking that your freedom to read is in danger in the digital age. Currently, several major publishers have refused to sell commercial eBooks to public li-braries. Right now, thats inconvenient and it limits the eBooks were able to offer. Usually, we can still provide a print alternative, but how long before this lack of access shifts from mere frustration to an encroachment on your First Amendment right? A recent Price Waterhouse Cooper report projects that by the year 2016, e-books will make up 50 percent of the U.S. trade (new, popular) book market; and that spending on printed books will be limited. Will there still be a reason for every new book that gets pub-lished to be printed AND available as an eBook? I doubt it. With the consumer demand for eBooks outpacing the demand for print, I can see a day in the not too distant future when new books will only be published in a digital format. Those with the most freedom to read will be those with an eBook reader in their book bag, a credit card and dispos-able income. That should be unacceptable to all of us. Its not just a digital divide wed be facing, but a knowledge divide that, in South Carolina, we cant afford to exacerbate. Want to help us defend our communitys freedom to read? Go to ebooksforlibraries.com and let publishers know you want eBooks to be available to your public library. Thanks. You look good in a cape! Warmly,

The TD Charitable Foundation, funded by TD Bank, has pro-vided a $5,000 grant to support the librarys Learning Discov-ery project. The grant will allow the library to use technology to expand current outreach efforts to young children, preschool teach-ers and senior adults, providing access to new learning and reading moments with mobile, touchscreen technology. iPads with a wide selection of high-quality, developmentally appropriate apps will be provided to several childcare centers and residential senior adult facilities. Library staff and volun-teers will provide programs at these locations to help partici-pants discover the devices, explore helpful and enjoyable ap-plications, and enrich their reading and learning experiences.
Providing technology such as iPads to children and senior adults who dont have access will open up both learning op-portunities and imaginations, said Tony Tallent, director of literacy and learning at the library. This generous grant will allow us to bring a new way of reading, learning and playing into the lives of many people as we circulate them through-out our community. For more information on supporting efforts of the library through the Richland County Public Library Foundation, please contact Development Manager Tina Gills at (803) 929-3424 or [email protected].

at Your Library!Learn
Its never too early to start saving. The Credit Union National
Association suggests the following activity to teach young
children about saving. $
How to do it:Help your child set a goal. Make it something he would like to buy with the money he saves. Remember to start small.
Chart your childs success. You can make a savings chart or graph to help him see his money grow. Its easier for children to understand coins
first so mark his progress using dimes, nickels or quarters.
Celebrate goals! When he reaches his goal, take him out to buy his item and celebrate.
Congratulations.Youre a growing saver!

In August, several volunteers were recognized as Spotlight Volunteers for each location, based on their efforts to go above and beyond in their work. Interested in volunteer-ing? Call Cathy Dolan at 929-3436.
