    Fort Bliss Leadership Camp

    By Cari Hutcheson

    Leadership is learned through lifes

lessons and from others. The 2013 MYAC

Youth Leadership Camp served to do just

that, by taking young people with strong

leadership skills and giving them the

opportunity to mentor others and share

    their knowledge and skills.

    Camp was held August 12th

    through 16th

on Ft. Bliss and was comprised of 33 Army

youth that earned the opportunity to

    participate. Milam YACs advanced

    leadership youth served as mentors,

    Team Leaders and Junior Advisors

through the entire camp. They also

stepped up and assisted staff with daily

    operations.

    By Brigid Mejia

Never doubt that a small group of

    thoughtful, committed citizens can

    change the world-Margaret Mead

Volunteers are a vital to the all

    programs. Volunteers bring a pulse

to a program that is irreplaceable.

    Volunteers frequently bring much-

needed energy and enthusiasm to a

    program. The National Guard

    Family Programs volunteers are no

exception. Our partners at theArmy National Guard Family

    programs have built a vast

    volunteer base of committed

    dedicated people working with the

    kids.

On Saturday, August 24, the Texas

    Army National Guard Family

    Program hosted their volunteer

    training, in which Operation:

Military Kids was able to be a part

of. We were able to train the adult

volunteers on programs andresources to assist the kids during

    yellow ribbon events, family days

    and camps. The volunteers left

with a wealth of knowledge on

    team building, creative arts and

    technology skills to enhance the

wellbeing of the youth that they

    work with.

    4-H Citizenship Washington

    Focus

    By Annie May

Four youth, from Fort Hood, Texas,

got the week of a lifetime as they

    were given the opportunity to

    participate in 4-H Citizenship

    Washington Focus. The youth were

able to participate in the 4-H

    National Mentoring Capstone

    through funds provided by OJJDP

and the National 4-H Council. The

    four youth participate in the

    National Mentoring Program Tech

Wizards. The program is funded by

    OJJDP and provides at-risk and

underserved youth to work with a

    mentor in coordination with 4-H

STEM related programs.Throughout the week at CWF, the

youth were able to participate in

    workshops on mentoring, meet

    professionalsand government

    employees who have benefited

    from positive mentoring

relationships, as well as tour the

    beautiful city of Washington D.C.

During the week, the four youth

    had the opportunity to participate

in various workshops on topics such

    as congressional issues, bill writing,

action planning, as well as peer

mentoring. The youth also had the

    opportunity to participate in

    committees throughout the week.

The week was jam packed with

    history, government issues, and

fun! One of the most rewarding

experiences of the week was seeing

the youth grow as individuals and

    Americancitizens throughout the

    week.

The youth were able to open up

and see new things they had never

    seen before. They made new

friends and took on leadership roles

    they had never taken before.

Texas 4-H members are unlike any

    other youth organization members-

we strive to do the best and we

    make the best better! Saturday,

    October 12, 2013, will be our 5th

    anniversary of Texas 4-H members

    giving back through community

service and making a difference in

    one day!

Every 4-H member in Texas is asked

to take part in a community service

project. You can pick a project as

small as mowing the neighbors yard

by yourself, to as large as your

    entire county 4-H coming together

to host a 5K run for a local

    organization.

One Day 4-H is your day to Make

    Difference in your Community!
