Theme: How is our Hearing?
There are several processes of obtaining knowledge. On this Sunday I am going
to reflect on visual and vocal metaphors as a means of understanding. Visual
metaphors are mostly favored by Western intellectual thought. We speak of the
“mind’s eye” which suggests a camera passively taking note of static reality. Vis-
ual metaphors suggest distance, objectivity and detachment so that one can gain a
better perspective. The visual is often distorted or ruined if one gets too close. In
obtaining knowledge, the subject and object must be disengaged so that realistic
picture can be obtained.
By contrast vocal metaphors employ not the eye but the ear. In order to hear and
listen, we must draw close. There is a sense of intimacy and relationship between
the subjects. In order to properly hear, we must be in dialogue. There is a fluidity
to any conversation which requires a sensitivity to speaking and listening. Vocal
metaphors suggest connection and unity between the players. Vocal metaphors
require a balance so that the conversation can flow with ease.
The scripture is filled with both visual and vocal metaphors. Our reading this
twenty second draw heavily on vocal metaphors. Moses calls the community to-
gether so as to make clear what will be required of them for the covenant rela-
tionship with God. continued on page 3

Tema: ¿Cómo está nuestra oido? Hay varios procesos de obtención de conocimiento. Este domingo voy a reflexionar
sobre las metáforas visuales y vocales como medio de comprensión. Las metáforas
visuales son favorecidas principalmente por el pensamiento intelectual occidental.
Hablamos del "ojo de la mente" que sugiere una cámara que toma nota pasivamente
de la realidad estática. Las metáforas visuales sugieren distancia, objetividad y
desapego para que se pueda obtener una mejor perspectiva. La imagen a menudo se
distorsiona o arruina si uno se acerca demasiado. Al obtener conocimiento, el sujeto y

La escritura está llena de metáforas visuales y vocales. Nuestra lectura

Moisés convoca a la comunidad para dejar en claro lo que se requerirá de
ellos para la relación del pacto con Dios. "Ahora, Israel, escucha los
estatutos y decretos que te enseño a observar, para que vivas, y puedas
entrar y tomar posesión de la tierra que el Señor, el Dios de tus padres, te

Moisés quiere que la gente escuche.
El libro de Deuteronomio usa una metáfora vocal para mostrar que uno
debe acercarse al Señor. El pacto no es una relación estática y visual.
Más bien, es un flujo fluido de amor, cuidado y sensibilidad. La objetivi-
dad no es lo que se requiere. Dios quiere que su gente lo conozca exis-
tencialmente y responda a su amorosa voluntad. El Señor escucha el
clamor de su pueblo. Su llamado de ayuda en Egipto no quedó sin re-
spuesta. Los gritos de los pobres llegan a los oídos del Señor y él re-
sponde a sus necesidades. Él está lleno de compasión y cuidado por los
pobres, las viudas y los huérfanos. El Señor puede hacer esto porque se
acerca a su gente. Él está siempre presente y cerca de los quebrantados
de corazón. El Señor está en prelación con la creación.
El problema surge cuando queremos responder al Señor con solo
nuestros poderes cognitivos. Nos deslizamos en la metáfora de lo visual.
Vemos lo que Dios quiere de una manera objetiva. Sabemos lo que se
requiere. Podemos enumerar todo lo que se debe y no se debe hacer en el
pacto. Pero algo falta. No hay una relación de vida real. No hay profun-
didad de sentimientos, ninguna respuesta al Señor. Hay un apego a la
letra de la ley pero no al espíritu viviente.
Jesús, en nuestra lectura del evangelio, cita a Isaías con aprobación:
"Esta gente me paga de labios pero su corazón está lejos de mí. Vacío es
la reverencia que me haces porque enseñan como dogmas simples pre-
ceptos humanos. "Eso es lo que sucede cuando nuestra relación con Dios
es meramente formal. Venimos a reemplazar la voluntad y el diseño de
Dios con los nuestros. ¿Por qué? Porque hemos creado una distancia que
nos impide escuchar lo que el Señor requiere.
Nuestra segunda lectura de James nos recuerda que las palabras del Pa-
dre son vivificantes y tienen el poder de salvar. Debemos acercarnos al
Señor para escuchar lo que él requiere. Pero se pide más. Escuchar real-
mente la palabra de Dios significa poner en acción. James nos da un
ejemplo concreto: "Cuidar a los huérfanos y las viudas en su angustia y
mantenerse sin mancha por el mundo hacen que la adoración pura sin
mancha delante de nuestro Dios y Padre. "La audición no es pasiva. Es-
cuchar la palabra de Dios nos permite ser sensibles a las palabras de los
demás.
El Señor nos habla todos los días. Él también escucha nuestras necesi-
dades. ¿Se puede decir lo mismo de nosotros? ¿Escuchamos la palabra
del Señor y respondemos a su Amor? ¿Escuchamos los gritos de quienes
nos rodean? ¿Respondemos a los necesitados? "¡Dejen que todos presten
atención a lo que oye!"

“Now, Israel, hear the statutes and decrees which I am teach-
ing you to observe, that you may live, and may enter in and
take possession of the land which the Lord, the God of your
fathers, is giving you.” Before there is any mention of what is
required of Israel, Moses wants the people to hear and listen.
The book of Deuteronomy is using a vocal metaphor in order
to show that one must draw close to the Lord. The covenant is
not a static, visual relationship. Rather, it is a fluid flow of
love, care, and sensitivity. Objectivity is not what is required.
God wants his people to existentially know him and to respond
to his loving will. The Lord hears the cry of his people. Their
call for help in Egypt did not go unanswered. The cries of the
poor reach the ears of the Lord, and he responds to their needs.
He is filled with compassion and care for the poor, the widows
and the orphans. The Lord can do this because he draws close
to his people. He is ever present and near to the broken
hearted. The Lord is in prelateship with creation.
The problem arises when we want to respond to the Lord with
only our cognitive powers. We slip into the metaphor of the
visual. We see what God wants in an objective way. We know
what is required. We can list all the do’s and don’ts of the
covenant. But something is missing. There is no real living
relationship. There is no depth of feeling, no response to the
Lord. There is a clinging to the letter of the law but not to the
living spirit.
Jesus, in our gospel reading, quotes Isaiah with approval:
“This people pays me lip service but their heart is far from me.
Empty is the reverence thy do me because they teach as dog-
mas mere human precepts.” That is what happens when our
relationship with God is merely a formal one. We come to
replace God’s will and design with our own. Why? Because
we have created a distance which makes it impossible for us to
hear what the Lord requires.
Our second reading from James reminds us that the Father’s
words are life-giving and have the power to save. We must
draw close to the Lord in order to hear what he requires. But
more is asked for. To really hear the word of God means to put
into action. James gives us a concrete example: “Looking after
orphans and widows in their distress and keeping oneself un-
spotted by the world make for pure worship without stain be-
fore our God and Father. “Hearing is not passive. The hearing
of God’s word allows us to be sensitive to the words of others.
The Lord speaks to us every day. He also listens to our needs.
Can the same be said of us? Do we listen to the Lord’s word
and respond to his Love? Do we listen to the cries of those
around us? Do we respond to those in need? “Let everyone
heed what he hears!”

The Knights of Columbus is forming to serve
the needs of our parish community. In order to join
this fraternal, Catholic organization often called the
‘right arm of the church’, a man must be at least 18
years of age and a practical Catholic. Next week-
end, September 8 & 9, men from the Knights will
be here to talk to us about their works and to an-
swer any questions that you may have. Twenty men
are required to make a council a reality. These may
be new men to the order or men transferring from
other councils. Be prepared to sign up next week,
or have your questions ready. In the meantime, if
you have any questions before hand, please contact

SEPTEMBER 2018-2019 Our Lady of Good Counsel is accepting registrations
for September the 2018 program year.
Registration forms can be picked up in the back
of the church or in the parish office. The complete
registration form, a copy of the Baptism certificate, a
copy of the birth certificate along with the registration
fee are to be submitted at the time of registration.
