Abstract:
Purpose:
The purpose of this document is to create a design piece that can display my creativity,
design, and storytelling skills for employment by game development studios. This designs' main
focus is to show an integration of game design concepts with strong story elements to create a
fresh and unique concept, Teddy Bears. Using "The Ultimate Guide to Video Game Writing and
Design" book as a guide, I designed this concept with a no holds barred attitude, figuring I could
let my creativity shine through and have as much fun as possible with it.
What is it?:
The game is about a young mother protecting her family at all cost from an evil teddy
bear apocalypse evolving in the northwest region of the United States; starting in Eugene,
Oregon. Crazy, I know. But still fun.
Sections:
Portions of this design consists of a full synopsis, break down of game concept,
discussion of the story elements and a description of the world within the first hour. A full
character break down of Mom, our lead heroine and the games' mechanics cap off the design.
Concept:
The premise behind the story and design is that it is zany, creative, and fun. There are
elements of the design I don't expect to make a final release of a game, but it gives the design
some flexibility. Think of the design as the debut of a concept car, where many elements will
not make the final release, but provides the audience an exploration of ideas that are possible.
At the time; late 2010, I took notice that there weren't many strong, lead female
characters (aside from Lara Croft and a couple others), and not many minority leads at that, so I
sought to create just that. Also non-overly sexualized female characters. The result is Mom, a
young mother in her early 30's, fighting to protect her son, Zach and niece, Natasha through
one of the weirdest, and darkly humored survival horror games you might ever come across.
Well, there you have it. I hope you enjoy,
Jacques

Quick Summary:
This is the beginning of an evil teddy bear outbreak. Teddy bears have animated/become alive
and start to terrorize humans. We follow a young mother, who is caught in the middle of it all
as she tries to protect her children. Along the journey, the family encounters an elite squad of
good commando teddy bear (C.A.R.E. Bears) which initially help her, but also causes her son to
be kidnapped.
First five minutes:
- First level: The Race Home
The story starts off with a young mother performing a list of chores throughout the day. Her
day seems normal until suddenly, at the checkout line, a scream and some commotion are
heard from the back of the grocery store. Many shoppers rush to the front of the store in a
panic and the security gates begin to roll shut. Mom narrowly escapes the falling gates and
notices other people racing to their cars from other stores. She quickly jumps in her car and
makes her way home. At an intersection, a delivery truck slams into a storefront across from
her and a monstrous figure appears from the rear door of the truck. It is a Goliath bear (King
Kong sized bear) that bursts out of the back. The Goliath Bear terrorizes the citizens on the
street and in their cars passing by, while Pawns begin to appear and hunt down individuals. She
narrowly escapes and maneuvers through the traffic and chaos to race home to her niece and
son.
What mom witnesses in the beginning?
- There will be large amounts of chaos and disaster at the intersection and on the road
- Large explosions, fireballs
- People being attacked all around or chased
o Bleeding, bitten, crawling and jumped/swarmed
- Glass breaking and car crashes
- There should be traps already being tripped, set, or many of the several ways that teddy
bears can kill humans should be visible
Driving practice:
The player will get a crash course of the driving system at this moment as the mother has to
race home to her kids.
- Reverse, drive forward, and braking
- Getting used to the speeds and the chaos
- Maneuvering/Swerving/weaving in and out of traffic

Core Ideas and Assumptions:
- The game's overall premise. The ideas that we’re(Game development team) are
following in the most general terms. This section focuses on the fundamental concepts
and chases away all other ideas that are flying around.
1. This game is about a mother protecting her family from evil teddy bears that have taken
over a small town in Oregon, as well as the whole northwest U.S. region. Mom will be
portrayed as strong and rational, and her character is to be respected. She will not to be
portrayed as a sex object or to be weakened because of her gender. (Respected
Character Portrayal)
2. This game is an action packed adventure. Mom’s character will fight and struggle
throughout this journey. We want the player to perform actions within the game that
mimic a real life struggle against obstacles and physical odds, where we simulate the use
of your "will" and physical/inner strength to fight. Pushing, pulling and lifting, drawing
out blood, sweat and tears throughout the game. (Creating A Struggling Experience)
3. The player will have to think quickly and figure out how to maneuver this teddy bear
infested warzone. This is not a mindless shooter or hack and slash. The player has to be
smart and careful. The player must also attempt different strategies to successfully get
through a particular mission. (Avoiding Mindless Play/Strategic-Play) (Problem solving
thriller)
4. There should be multiple ways to successfully complete missions. This is not entirely a
“guided” journey. It is up to the player to determine how to get through and survive.
Factors and events change every time the game is played. No two experiences are the
same and everyone experiences a different “game life”. (Dynamic Play /Replay-
ability/Unique Game-Lives)
5. We want to create memorable experiences. We want fans to say, “Remember the time
such and such happened and you had to do this, but that went wrong…” We want to
also capture this feeling by drawing the players' attention/camera perspectives towards
game events, highlighting key moments through audio (what is heard), visual events
(what is seen) and story events.
- One of the main themes of this game is chaos and un-believability. There should be
large amounts of chaos, scripted events (short 3-5 seconds) and background events to
portray this. Someone should always be in trouble/being attacked (needing help) and
the player should generally feel that Mom’s character and the family are not safe. The
player should be on constant alert. (Theme: Edgy and Chaotic)
Full Synopsis:
We start off with the view advancing through a dark aisle within a factory setting. The camera
pans down the aisles and towards shelves of boxed toy teddy bears with clear front panels,
coming to a stop on one in particular. A teddy bear dressed in a high ranking uniform is
displayed. The bear moves slightly, just enough for the audience to catch, and then again, it
starts to move and break free of its packaging restraints. Free of its box, the bear observes its
surroundings, before helping other bears out of their boxes. Before long, many bears are
organizing and packing into shipping crates for delivery trucks. The scene zooms out and the
audience sees the scope of what’s going on. There is a hoard of these bears. (Similar to I-robot
warehouse scene).
At dawn, the trucks go out and make their shipments while the rest of the town starts their day.
We break to a scene of a woman in bed, waking up to her cell phone's alarm. She wakes up the
kids and this small family starts their day. The kids finish their breakfast and head off to school,
while the mother tends to her errands and daily chores. The mother is seen throughout the day
doing these errands, one of which is her morning workout. The audience is led to believe that
she is fairly strong and fit. After her workout, the audience catches a glimpse of her “To Do”
list/list for the day. The last thing on the list is “Groceries”. We see her walking towards the
entrance of the grocery store/Mal-mart from afar through the parking lot. It is overcast/stormy
over the store; a scene paying homage to the classic film Cape Fear, where Cady (Robert
DeNiro) is walking out of the prison.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQqo-w1qvws
Breaking to a different scene, we see postal and delivery trucks go around town delivering their
packages. In a police department, a number of boxes are brought in and the driver waits for a
signature. The officer at the front desk signs and carries on. Throughout the day, mail is picked
up along with these mystery boxes and the teddy bears removed from them are discussed
amongst the officers. Towards the end of the day, all but one box is left. The officer at the front
desk, curious and feeling left out, opens up the last box and holds the teddy bear up, inspecting
it. A small digital alarm clock strikes 4:45PM and the bear animates. Blood splatters across the
face of the clock, while other bears, picked up earlier in the day begin their attacks down the
hall and throughout offices in the department. The whole police department is overrun and
everyone inside is massacred. We switch back to Mom at the grocery store, where she is
waiting in the checkout line.
Synopsis continued:
Inside the grocery store, a shout is heard and a man from the back runs hysterically towards the
front, screaming for everyone to run. He is bloodied and visibly injured. An unnatural sound
moans from the back of the store. Nervously, Mom and other shoppers move towards the front
exits. The security gates begin to come down as she and a few barely make it out, while others
remain trapped inside. She wishes to help, but as she tries, she sees a figure terrorizing
shoppers inside. Seeing other shoppers head for their cars, Mom quickly thinks about her kids
decides to go.
On her way home, Mom witnesses a horrific accident involving a car and a delivery truck, car
gets T-boned. From the back of the truck, emerges a monster (a Goliath bear) that attacks the
people at the intersection. It looks very strange, almost non-animal like. Mom narrowly escapes
and races home.
- She stops at an intersection for a red light and in the span of seconds, while waiting, she
sees a delivery truck slam into a turning car. Both cars crash onto another car on the
opposite side and come to a halt. After some time, a Goliath breaks free from the back
of the truck and gives a terrifying holler at all drivers and pedestrians. A car attempts to
drive by, but it is taken a hold of and the humongous bear picks the human cleanly from
the driver side, hurling him off a distance away. The scene changes to show Mom
shocked, with panicked eyes (focus on eyes only). We see her hand ready to shift the
gear and she immediately puts the car in reverse. Driving forward, she jumps the curb
are gets on the other side of the road. The Goliath bear makes a run for her and almost
catches the back bumper, but she pulls away and watches the bear shrink in the
distance.
She gets home and starts to prepare for a possible attack. The kids are confused, but as Mom
continues to ready the family, the house comes under attack. Defending it courageously, Mom
shoots many bears that break into the house, even managing to kill a Gladiator bear (7-8 foot
athletic bear) that breaks through the front door. Mom fires several rounds until the gladiator
goes down. They escape the house and witness that the neighborhood has been taken over.
They manage to get through the front yard and into the parked station wagon to finally escape
the chaos. When all settles, we are shown a dark figure inside a washing machine. It is a toy
teddy bear, Ben; Zach’s favorite stuffed animal, that comes to life. It opens the washing
machine door open and steps out. It has a curious look. A moment later, we see in the packed
box a framed picture of the small family and the same toy teddy bear, Zach's bear.
Synopsis continued:
The family makes it far enough to catch their breath and relax some. Running low on gas, Mom
pulls into a gas station on the side of the road. She commands Natasha to keep Zach and herself
hidden while she fills up. Unable to use a conventional debit card gas pump, she reluctantly
heads over to the store to pay and release the pump. The cashier, an elderly man, takes no
notice to Mom's hurriedness and makes comments about the technological advancements of
TV and movies while watching the breaking news reports. Unaware that these incidences are
actual events that are occurring, he slowly processes the payment. At the same time, a swarm
of evil teddy bears advance towards the gas station and start to attack it. Mother soon realizes
a Giant bear (25 ft tall) is coming and quickly hides behind some snacks at the front of the store.
The bear reaches and breaks through the window, grabbing the old man. We hear him
screaming and yelling as disappears and we assumed that he is eaten as it goes silent. Mother
dodges further attacks by the bear and manages to escape the store into the open. Natasha
disobeys Moms orders and helps pump the gas into the car while Mom devises a plan to trap
the bear in the ceiling of the car port covering the gas pumps. The bear get stuck punching a
hole into the car port. She lets out gasoline onto the gas station floor and lights the puddle on
fire. As Mom drives off, the gas pumps erupt in flames and explode, consuming the bear. The
family drives off.
Late into the night, Mom decides to stop at a junk yard to rest where she finds other survivors
and refugees heading for safety. While organizing and planning with the group there, Natasha
points out that there is a school bus and the group quickly prepares it for transport. They fortify
it and cover all vulnerable open areas. Towards the end of this, evil teddy bears attack and kill
several members of the group as the remainder escape in the bus. Ben (Zach's toy teddy bear,
but much larger) arrives and realizes he has just missed Zach. He carries on searching for him.
On their way to a nearby town, the school bus' electrical system fails and they suddenly stop.
While trying to figure out what is wrong, they are approached by a benevolent group of elite
commando teddy bears, called the C.A.R.E. Bears. The Colonel, the clear leader of the platoon
explains that they’re not sure of their origins, but are sure that their purpose is to protect the
humans against evil teddy bears. They seem technologically savvy and possess a number of
gadgets. They load the bus with supplies and even a rotary gun. One platoon member, Gator
receives intelligence of an impending attack on a nearby town the humans are trying to visit.
Distrustful of the teddy bears, the group insists and they continue on together. Gator gets the
bus running again and the C.A.R.E. Bears ride with the group.

Synopsis continued:
As Mom and the children arrive to the town, an attack occurs via parachuting teddy bears and
many of the group perishes.
- The family and the C.A.R.E. Bears reach a town square and are surprised to find
everyone is packing; looking to evacuate. The group parks the bus and start to trickle
out. The C.A.R.E Bears remain hidden inside the bus as not to arise panic. The rest of the
group seek out supplies. Slowly people take notice of something above. A crate is falling
from the sky, landing and followed by parachutes that cover them. People inch towards
it and see something creeping from underneath. A teddy bear emerges, calm and serene
and the people exclaim in reaction. Suddenly, behind the growing crowd another crate,
much larger, crashes to the ground. At an instance, a large Gladiator bear rips through
the crates’ panels. Pawns also rush out. Everyone begins screaming and running away in
panic.
Mother is able to save some and help others fight, but the group of survivors is forced to
escape yet again in the bus they arrived in. They race through the town's narrow roads, while
being attacked on both sides. Ben appears, now a towering giant teddy bear, chases the bus
trying to reunite with Zach. As they drive off, Natasha helps shoot at Ben from the rear, keeping
him at bay as they maneuver through the streets. This only angers Ben and appears to make
him stronger (Show a connection between Zach and Ben) as he angrily destroys everything in
his path. The group finally escapes and leaves Ben, appearing to be dead in the middle of the
street and rubble. The Colonel is left intrigued as he realizes there is a connection between
Bens’ growing power and Zach. Zach must hold a special power and is the reason for
everything.
Surprise bump:
Following the group fights with Ben, The Colonel turns against his platoon and Mom by
kidnapping Zach. This results in the killing of team members; Sniper and Queeny. Mom is left
distraught, but then picks herself up and goes on to search for her son. Believing it is time;
Mom goes to Natasha and gives her a talk about her new role in this situation. They go on to
search and come across a facility where a Mechanical Bear (Mech Bear) is discovered and being
constructed. Found out and overwhelmed, Mom and Natasha take refuge in a small building.
The Mech Bear activates and attacks them, forcing them up the building. At the top of the
building and with the aid of having higher ground, they fight back and disable the Mech Bear.
After disabling the Mech Bear, the C.A.R.E. bears find in a store of a nearby mall, a teddy bear
costume that Natasha can easily fit. Determined to get her son back, Mom allows Natasha to
disguise herself in the suit and infiltrate the evil teddy bears headquarters; Mal-mart.
Rebuilding of the Mech Bear begins and they set off for battle.
Mom and the group arrive in the plains just before the headquarters. Outfitted in the costume,
Natasha makes her way for the Mal-Mart plant and simply walks through hoards of evil teddy
bears. She is looked at curiously, but no bears approach or become overly suspicious. She gets
in and starts to sneak her way in sabotaging and disrupting the operations of the facility, while
Mom begins her attack from the outside. The Colonel becomes aware that something is wrong
and jumps into a miniature Mech suit; 2 times larger than Natasha, to hunt her down;
Minotaur/Maze-like. Natasha manages to escape him and finds Zach and other kidnapped
children.
Joined by other benevolent teddy bears, the rebellion begins with Mom and the repaired Mech
bear fighting through the army of evil teddy bear. She makes her way far into the evil teddy
bears defenses before the Mech bear takes on too much damage and collapses. Mom
continues her ground attack, using mainly a samurai sword to fight off enemies. As things turn
for the worse with Mom and her group of rebels becoming surrounded, Ben (heavily damaged)
comes to the rescue. Mom realizes that Ben is a good bear and fights alongside him as he helps
them advance towards the Mal-mart. They fight together across the rest of the terrain; the last
100 yards.
Placed on the roof by Ben, Mom infiltrates the Mal-Mart and finds Natasha and Zach. As they
are confronted by The Colonel, she tells Natasha to take Zach to safety. Mom and The Colonel
have their showdown and she eventually wins and kills him. As she emerges from the facility,
she finds Zach and Natasha waiting for her outside with the good teddy bears celebrating.
Suffering from severe damage, Ben dies and Zach and him have a moment. The small family
pack up a car and once again hit the road, traveling eastward. As they drive off and the camera
zooms out, a beautiful day turns into a dark and cloudy scene where “Teddy Bears” is displayed
in blood red.

The Elements of Plot:
Ultimate Guide formula for Plot
- Plot = Dramatic Tension (Conflict * Stakes/Time = Hero Jeopardy)
Constructing our plot:
Conflict What is the nature of the fight?
Evil Teddy bears vs. Mankind
- Specifically focusing on a small sub-urban family; A mother, her
son and her 15 year old niece
Stakes What are the stakes that this fight is about?
- Lives, Freedom, and the safety of Mom’s family
- Children are a main target and may be kidnapped; The
kidnapping of Zach results in an immediate game over once the
window for saving him closes.
- Other people in danger/under attack
Hero Jeopardy How does the conflict and stakes put our hero at risk?
- There are many dangerous traps and a variety of roaming
enemies that will cause harm to the main characters; Mom as
well as danger/possibility of kidnapping of family members
- This will result in character death, loss of resources, and game
progression; game over scenarios (Zach/children getting
kidnapped).
Dramatic Tension What are the results of the conflict and the stakes, and how do they
impact our characters?
- Surrounding people die, and the mother's son and niece can be
kidnapped.
- The main character; Mom is under constant pressure, and
"emotionally distraught"
- At one point, the player should feel somewhat compelled to get
Zach back when he is eventually kidnapped (part of story); this
should be a direct challenge to the player.
- Player may be compelled to save other Non-playable characters
Time Over what time period does this conflict take place?
This particular story occurs over a period of 2-3 days (story mode); 12-15
hours (game-play; countdown)

Starting the story: The roller coaster
Exhilaration
- Mission: The Race Home
o Unknowingly to the citizens of the town, delivery trucks all over are packed with
evil teddy bears instead of their original shipments. At 4:15PM, they animate
/LIGHTNING STRIKES and begin their attack on the humans. Mom, the
protagonist of the story is in a Mal-Mart that is taken over while she grocery
shops. A hysterical and bloodied employee runs from the back of the store
screaming out warnings of something dangerous back from where he came. All
exits begin to shut, trapping most shoppers. Mom narrowly escapes and races
home to her family; her son Zach and niece Natasha.
o In route a traffic accident occurs between a normal car and delivery truck.
Onlookers approach to see if the drivers involved are ok, when suddenly a large
teddy bear bursts out from the back of the truck. Other drivers try to drive past,
but are soon attacked and quickly killed by this monster. Mom, finds a way to
drive away and race back home.
Building suspense
- Mission: Defend the Home:
o Soon after arriving to her home, the family is attacked by a small group of teddy
bears; 15 to 20. They cause some damage to the home leaving it vulnerable. She
is forced to escape with her family as the neighborhood is overtaken.
 Kill these teddy bears
 Gather resources
Lucky Ice cream, the usual neighborhood ice cream truck, is hijacked by
bears and patrols the neighborhood attempting to lure and kidnap kids.
The family escapes the neighborhood with the family station wagon,
however they are in need of gas.
o Scene: Ben animates and looks depressed and alone, he wanders throughout the
house and neighborhood. In the street, he is seen holding a picture of Zach
holding Ben.
Building suspense
- Mission: Uncle Ted's Fill'r Up: Gas station:
o In this part a tribe/troop of evil teddy bears overruns the gas station that the
family is filling up at. This group consists of many pawns which isn’t the problem.
The main enemy is a Giant Bear, standing about 40 feet tall that is ravaging the
gas station. Although an awkward mover, The bear can easily track down even
the most mobile objects as represented by another vehicle trying to flee. The
Giant crushes one in particular.
Story Construction continued:
o Mom, devises a way to escape using the gas station and anything else she can
find. She pumps gas from several pumps onto the floor of the gas station causing
a huge puddle. She then proceeds to having the Giant Bear trap itself by
punching through the roof of the car port of the gas station. From there she can
set the puddle on fire causing the Giant Bear to erupt in flames.
o Game Mode; there is more than 1 way to escape from the Giant and I would like
to develop more.
Gas pump eruption; using the gasoline from the gas pumps to trap the
Giant Bear and set it afire
Use of a nearby gas tanker; that if used correctly can be used to destroy
the Giant Bear
o Dialogue: Natasha helps gas up the car, Mom is grateful but mad that she didn’t
stay hidden. This will occur a couple more times, showing that Mom is both very
concerned and very hard on her kids.
Slowing
- Mission: Junk yard:
o While driving, Mom notices a location where other survivors are heading to, a
junk yard. Multiple stories are heard of attacks all around North Oregon. The
group agrees that they need to band together. Using flashlights and car
headlights, they find a school bus and fortify it and gather tools from around the
yard. While preparing, they are attacked and forced to flee. Mother tries to save
as many as she can before leaving.
o When all has settled, Ben (Medium; 9 ft) appears much larger and seemingly
distressed. He finds a sign that Ben has been in the area. He lets out a holler.
Simultaneously, Zach is seen sleeping in the bus.
 Objectives:
• Fortify school bus
• Gather tools and resources
• Kill evil teddy bears and save people from attack
- Intermission/Slowing:
o C.A.R.E. Bears stop the bus and introduce themselves. They seem to be
technologically savvy; holding gadgets and having tech equipment. The Colonel,
leader of the the C.A.R.E. Bears, tell the humans that they are here to protect the
humans, and fight the evil teddy bears. He is a stern and authoritative figure to
the rest of the platoon.
o The humans inform the Bears that they found on a map a nearby town that they
can try and find shelter in
Story Construction continued:
o The C.A.R.E. Bears receive intelligence that this town will be under attack next,
and insist that they not proceed; reports of a Giant in the vicinity (Unknowingly,
this is Ben)
o The group, distrustful of these non-attacking bears, insist that they will continue
o The C.A.R.E. Bears agree to escort the humans
- Mission: Town square and Bus Drive
o Natasha/Sniper Dialogue; bonding starts (iffy about the timing of this)
o The bus stops and everyone gets out. Everything seems fine. Suddenly via
parachute, hundreds of evil teddy bear land and start to attack the town’s
people. Mom tries to save a few people and helps fight back, but the group loses
several. Before it’s too late, survivors board the bus and flee down a road
o Objective: Kill attacking teddy bears/prevent boarding of the bus
 Kill evil teddy bear masses
o Objective: Fight Gladiator Bears
o Objective: Save people trapped in the buildings within this town and escape
 Defend the bus and escape
Using a “Rail and shoot” method; vehicle is on a set path and player just
has to shoot, Mom has to kill evil teddy bears that attempt to board the
bus.
Use weapons found at the junk yard as well as Teddy Bear weaponry
- Mission: Ben chase
o At the end of the “rail”; Ben appears. He appears now as a giant teddy bear. Zach
sees him and calls out enthusiastically and Ben in return sees Zach and begins to
move towards him. Natasha, wanting to help fight the seemingly evil bear; Ben,
uses a machine gun (C.A.R.E. Bear equipment) to fight it off as they race away
(Jurassic Park T-Rex scene)
o Objective: Stave off Ben’s pursuit
Fight off Ben to the point where he collapses; He is assumed to be killed.
Rail part II
o Mom is livid with Natasha for getting involved; (she actually shoots the Heavy
artillery gun), and wants her to stay safe and out of the way.
o The Colonel’s realization; Power and strength between Zach and Ben
Story Construction continued:
Bigger exhilaration
- Mission: Mech Take down
o Sniper and Natasha bond; they have a talk and makes her feel better about
Mom’s anger
o Mom and The Colonel also have a talk. He explains his purpose; it is vague and
seemingly righteous
o Mom, Natasha and C.A.R.E. Bears encounter the Mech manufacturing center and
witnesses it come online, it pursues them and the bears start to attack.
Downtown-Skyscrapers. Teddy bears scale the skyscraper and at the same time
Mom and Natasha must fight back against the Mech bear
o Objective: Gain higher ground/advantage on Mech Bear and evil teddy bears
Maneuver up the building to the top floor during Mech Bear attack
o Objective: Disable Mech Bear
Work with Natasha/Fight against Mech Bear
 Survive Mech bear
Surprise “bump”:
- No Mission/Story: Cut-scene: The Unraveling
o Once things calm down, The Colonel turns against the C.A.R.E. Bears and Mom
and even murders a couple of the troops (Sniper unravels string by string; pulled)
as he tries to defend the rest of the team. The son is kidnapped leaving the mom
in despair.
o The Colonel monologue
 Purpose (His, everyone else’s)
 Sacrifice (Sniper)
 Whatever it takes
o Depressed Mother scene
o Ben awakes; angry
Huge suspense
- Mission: Trojan Bear
o Mom’s serious talk with Natasha; Natasha’s time to shine
o The remaining C.A.R.E. Bears have reason to believe that Zach has been taken to
the Mal-Mart Mom was shopping a couple days ago earlier. Intelligence has
reported that it has been outfitted to be a makeshift headquarters and
command post for the evil teddy bears. In the process of taking down the Mech
Bear, a teddy bear suit/costume is found that Natasha can easily fit. She will use
this to infiltrate the headquarters and begin an attack against the evil teddy
bears.
Story Construction continued:
o Objective: Infiltrate Head Quarters
It is found that there is a bear suit that Natasha can fit into. She will use
this to infiltrate the Mal-mart HQ. She walks through the parking lot and
enters the Mal-mart.
o Objective: Sabotage evil teddy bears plans and allow access to the factory
Natasha must find a way to sabotage plans for a teddy bear army in
process of being assembled
o Objective: Find Zach
 Natasha ends up finding the Zach and the rest of the kidnapped children;
she releases and guides them to safety
o Objective: Minotaur/colonel-maze; hunting objective
The colonel becomes aware of this and uses a Mech suit to hunt down
Natasha
Final wild ride
- Mission: The Resistance
o Mom, and the C.A.R.E. Bears, are joined by other Good Bears to form a revolt
against the Evil Bear Headquarters and army
o Objective: Lead attack against evil bear ground forces
Using the captured Mech Bear, lead an attack and support your Good
bears against the evil bears
- Mission: The Resistance II: Mech Assault
o Objective: Fight alongside your fellow Good Bears on the ground
Mech Bear sustains heavy damage and collapses; fight on ground with
sword
o Ben appears, heavily damaged, Ben defends good teddy bears and helps move
you around while you pick off the evil teddy bears. With the help of Ben, Mom is
placed on the roof of the Mal-Mart.
o She meets with Natasha and takes over for her; Zach and Natasha run off for
safety. While Mom has her epic battle against The Colonel.
- Mission: The Showdown
o Mom gains access to the plant due to Natasha's help

Use of tools, almost all your tools to get 7 good hits to destroy his suit
and thus him
 Create a fire
 Have it crushed

- Mom destroys The Colonel and the resistance; surviving humans and good teddy bears
celebrate. Mom comes out relieved that her children are unharmed.
Get off the ride: Cut-scene: The Ride East
- The mom, niece and son travel east on a highway.

out, dark clouds encircle and darken the screen and Teddy Bears titles bleeds
onto the screen.
Bonus:
- Mission: Return Home:
o Objective: Lucky’s Ice Cream
Take out the Ice cream truck that is patrolling and kidnapping kids
Story Elements/Franchise Creation:
1. Theme
a. What is the reason you are telling this story?
i. To start something fresh and in a sense wacky. Explore a fun concept and
get away a bit from the typical zombie apocalypse game/story.
ii. To provide a new look into what can happen in the video games of today.
New technologies. I want to create new events, situations, etc. in a
cinematic way. I also want to create an intense and chaotic experience.
Something that leaves people on the edge of their seats and also makes
them wonder what’s going to happen next or I can’t believe that just
happened.
iii. To promote a new female character in this generation of video games.
1. A mother’s constant fight to protect her family which is a strong
concept; may pick up female fans and may dispel the stereotype
that leading female game characters have to be sex images and to
promote that a female character has the capability to be a strong
playable character.
2. To start a new era of disaster/monster ideas; produces the most
conflict (story-wise) and most epic situations/scenarios
a. The new age King Kong.
2. Character
a. There are more than 5 character traits/unique quirks things that she represents
and expresses that allows the player to learn who Mom is.
1. She will be strong, physically fit
2. Have heart - struggling facial expressions; determined looks, anger
3. Be a leader - will be able to hear her in-game, issue commands
4. Real/Human - cry, show sadness
5. Fearless - kill without missing a beat, even the largest of enemies
b. At one moment this mom is just a normal mom, running errands, cooking for her
family, cleaning, and the next she and her family are thrown into a chaotic
disaster where she must do everything in her power to protect the family. Even
kill these bears. The motherly instincts kick in.
i. Hopefully the player feeds off of this and gets into the theme and takes
rage out on the enemies.
c. She will have opportunities where she must protect both her family and others.
She will be forced to be supermom.
Story Elements/Franchise Creation continued:
3. Tone
a. What is it?
i. Dark and twisted, yet humorous at times because of the situation; teddy
bears are killing people in some gruesome and some funny outrageous
ways. This situation occurs mostly at night and the color, lighting and
shades are eerie.
ii. Three movies that capture the lighting and color
1. Cloverfield
2. 1st
15 minutes of “Dawn of the Dead”
3. War of the Worlds
4. World
a. It is current times and this mom lives in the suburbs of Northern Oregon with her
family and on a seemingly normal day after chores and errands, all hell breaks
loose.
i. People are running around wildly, scared out of their minds, panicking
and screaming.
ii. Much of it takes places in small towns and suburban areas; 1 city setting.
1. Normal citizens
2. What is left of the U.S. Military; Random soldiers, and devastated
platoons and squads
3. Teddy Bears
5. Time
a. The whole game takes place over a span of 2-3 days, or 12-15 hours (gameplay).
It starts around 4 pm when Mom heads home after errands. The player will have
about 15 hours to complete the game or have game over. I haven't really
thought of working Time into the design, however I think the most exciting way
to include a time factor is to display the start of the event and the elapsed time
since the beginning of the attack from the bears, maybe at the beginning of each
level/scene.
i. At some point, information might be conveyed to the player that an
event will take place by a certain time. Nuking the infected area?? maybe
the release of the Evil Teddy Bear army from the Mal-Mart plant. And
the player will be "drawn" to head towards the end.
For more on Iconic franchise elements, please see Iconic Franchise document (Not included in
this design).

Level walkthrough: Defend the Home
Time frame (4:36pm)
a. Main character/Player: Mom
b. Objective: Defend Home and family
c. Game-play: Shooting/Resource Gather
i. Interspersed scripted events
Describe all key action/interactions that take place:
What will the player experience?
- Stress of gathering the right tools and weapons while defending the home and keeping
pawn bears out of the home
- Fast pace action and anxiety.
o You should be thinking "Think think think! What do I do next?, What else do I
need?"
How is game-play and story integrated?
- The news report on TV will provide some insight
- Zach and Natasha's fear will clue you in
- The breaking of glass and the screams from outside will give the player insight into what
is going on outside and at the present moment; the unknown
- Fighting off the first set of pawns and encountering a Gladiator should be intense and
fast paced
o As the wave of enemies and the difficulty increases, this should naturally force
the player out of the home and escape in the station wagon
Synopsis:
Mom races home, finds the kids, and commands them to pack and get ready to leave right
away (this will be an automatically played audio clip as you move through the house). As Mom,
you must quickly pack important resources and gather the kids to leave all while teddy bears
begin to attack neighborhood and home. You will have to address pawns breaking in. As you
fend off the pawns as they attack you may start to notice that you are being pushed more and
more into a corner, from fighting upstairs, to the kitchen to just the living room to having the
enemies come at you from both sides; Gladiators starting to appear, bursting through the front
door. Eventually, you must escape the house and survive on the outside, your neighborhood.
Level walkthrough: Defend the Home continued
Scripted Event Example (SE):
The scripted event will play as such:
- Cinema: Giant bear will appear, look through the glass windows of the store while the
attendant is unaware. Smash its hand through the glass window and grab the cashier
and eat him (non-visible)
- Play will resume with the Giant bear smashing its hand through the roof searching for
Mom.
Playable Objectives:
Mom must:
- Gather resources
- Outlast the waves of bears and protect the family
- Escape the house
- Escape the neighborhood
The most epic solution:
Survive wave after wave of pawns
Kill the gladiator that burst through the front door
Escape the gladiator that lifts the rear of the station wagon up
Another solution:
Escape to the shed in the backyard and grab the chainsaw that is in there and lay waste to all
bears that attack.
Beginning of the Walkthrough:

Game Mechanics:
Our definition of game mechanics are ideas of different conceptual elements and methods
designed for interaction with the game, thus providing gameplay.
Game mechanics within the Teddy Bears world break down into three core concepts:
1. A tough world: a rigorous and demanding grind; a simulated physical experience
2. Your heroic duty: An ongoing duty to protect your family; Zach and Natasha, and other
vulnerable humans. Once you start the game the world acts as if you are the hero.
a. Gives you all the tools you will need
b. Puts you in the driver seat; you make the decision of who is saved
i. Everyone looks to you to make the right decision
3. Problem solving real world scenarios
a. Forces you to solve advanced real life puzzles - similar to The Last of Us
The world is:
- CHAOTIC
- FAST PACED
- RANDOM
The chaos and randomness of the game will serve as its own entity and game mechanism, in
terms of
- Events that occur
- Situations and problems that the player/character encounters
- Timing of both
Rules of this world:
It should be known to the player that
- You must not stay in one place too long
- You must be on the lookout and aware of your surroundings at all times
- You will have to fight to survive

Game Mechanics continued:
What tone do these mechanics set for the gameplay?
The player should immediately feel that this is a hard-hitting and dangerous world to live in.
That at any moment, you and your family members' "lives" are at risks. The mechanics should
demonstrate to the player that it is a very physical world and that you must fight and struggle
through all of it.
- Dark, Random, Hard hitting, Quick changes, A high level of intensity, High stakes
What elements are going to make the game high stakes and hard hitting?
Forcing Mom (the player) to make hard decisions and tough decisions, each posing their own
risks/consequences
o Harder obstacles
 Harder fights and enemies
Tighter windows of opportunity to sneak around and navigate the
environment
Harder to rescue and help family from dangerous situations
o Loss of family members, NPC characters needing rescue
o Loss of health
o Death
o Failure of mission
Basically, we want to put the player in situations that force the question,
"What is the best thing to do?"
- If I choose to save the one person or the group
- Face the obviously stronger enemy which will be a tough fight or run through a heavily
infested alley
- Use your gun and risk exposing your whereabouts or get into a quiet fight to the death
with an enemy that could result in your death
Game Mechanics continued:
What do our mechanics feel like?
- The struggle, tough and a lot of effort
- You are getting your ass beat
o How do you quantify getting your ass beat?
The fights have to be very physical and hard hitting, sort of like a
wrestling match
• Being choke slammed, strangled from behind
• Thrown, picked up and dropped
• Being kicked, punched
• Being dragged by a limb as you are disoriented
• Being carried over a shoulder and taken
• Being attacked repeatedly by different enemies from different
directions (multiple pawns)
o What will this look like?
Being exhausted, being out of breath or gasping for breath, being on your
knees in gut wrenching pain
o How will the player play?
The player should not be able to wail un-relentlessly on enemies
The player should be able to get it's attacks in and make them effective,
because the enemy, especially stronger ones will be able to counter and
break out of the assault
Inevitably, the player will be able to defeat most enemies
o How does the player respond to hits and damage?
At the same time, Mom is being beat the hell up and pummeled, most
landed hits should take minimal points off.
Being thrown and more severe hits will take more damage
o How does the player heal/recover from such physical fights?
 Resting
 Food
 Winning fights (adrenaline, motivation points)
Refer to Enemy Encounters document for information on how fights play out with different
enemies types.
The mechanics should feel "real" and as hard as a heavy weighted workout. Meaning, the
animations for these interactions (associated animations) should of course be smooth, but still
slow and tense so that the mechanics demonstrate great effort is being put in. I expect that
these animations and interactions will have long running times (3 seconds, to push a dead
Gladiator1 bear off of you or a car that needs a push start). The motion should demonstrate
that "this object is not something that can be easily picked up or pushed" 1: Gladiator bears are 8 feet tall, weighing well over 250 lbs. or so

Struggle mechanic - coupled by The Senses:
The Senses (A concept that will tie in with a struggling interaction) will include
- Sight: a slow and tense visual
- Sound: a long appropriate sound such as slow creaking, crushing, exhaling of air,
grinding (all adjectives that represent some sort of "friction" and work put in)
- Feel: simulated through the controller
- Tasting/Smelling – much harder to capture, but possibly stated via character statements
and visuals
o Tasting sound, then feeling mouth with hand and then revealing the sight of
blood on hand
o Sniffing for and revealing that your sense of smell was correct; a wet moldy
teddy bear is near...
Basically, if Mom doesn't sound like Serena Williams while playing tennis or Beatrix Kiddo/Uma
Thurman in Kill Bill than, we haven't captured her struggle in the ga me.
Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (1/12) Movie CLIP - Hello Vernita (2003) HD
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgRlzeYc1nk
Does your mechanics feel like the story we're trying to tell?
The story itself is fast paced and chaotic and follows a roller coaster ride narrative. If flows from
intense chaos to short lulls of quiet, through quick ramp ups and chaos again.
Quick recap of the first part of story, the levels include: (Also part of plot)
- Car ride home
o Fast paced, Chaotic
o Tight traffic situations, avoiding being cornered and stuck, crashes from other
frantic drivers, and enemies terrorizing the road
o Forcing the player to make quick decisions and quick adjustments; reversing,
maneuvering and slamming into anything that gets in the way
You and Izzy (station wagon) get acquainted quickly; she is tough like a
tank, like Mom
This Struggle mechanic continued:
- Defend the home
o Fast paced, Chaotic
o Multi-tasking to cover vulnerable points to the house, having your family
cornered in a tough situation; Mom has to switch from protecting her family and
home to fighting her way out of the home and the neighborhood.
From barricading windows and doors with bookshelves and mattresses
To shooting your way out and dodging danger on the outside
Mechanics and Story continued:
- Uncle Ted's Filler up
o Fast Paced, Chaotic
o A bit of hiding/sneaking to avoid the Giant bear, but fighting your way back to
the kids and Izzy (Your trusted station wagon)
o First set of real world problem solving; how to escape a 50 ft monster that is
faster than your car
The physicality of the mechanics will match the story in the sense that random dangerous
events, tough situations and enemies are thrown at you, the player at a fast pace, forcing you
to react quickly and fight your way out of these situations.
Gameplay: How will the player interact with the game?
1. Game’s rules
1. Kids don't get killed, they get kidnapped
2. Takes a lot to kill you: You will get your ass beat, but you will not be easily killed
3. You will RUN, A LOT and FIGHT a whole lot more
a. As well as push, pull, climb, lift, climb, fight/wrestle, use melee weapons, take
cover and hide, sneak, and DODGE/JUMP OUT OF THE WAY
4. No locked doors! – The idea that you can access any available door. The world won't
be the biggest sandbox, but it will be very voluminous. There is a lot of world in a
small town and a seemingly small building
5. Use your world and environment; things are stackable/pile-able and helpful
2. Plot: (Review "Quick recap" on previous page)
Gameplay: player interactions
3. Objectives: 1. Holding off an area; momentarily
2. Rescuing a child
3. Reaching a landmark/
4. Escaping successfully
5. Main level's mission/GOAL
i. Escaping the neighborhood
ii. Gas up Izzy (Station wagon)
iii. Gather resources at junk yard and escape
iv. Rescue children from town
v. Escape Ben – Big Ben (drive and shoot; turret)
vi. Survive the flames of the skyscraper
vii. Kill The Colonel - Malmart
4. Challenges: and how the player is meant to interact with them
1. Head on direct fight with enemies
2. Avoiding/Evading
3. Strategize and be a problem solver

Rouse's Game Mechanics:
For Rouse, game mechanics are "the guts of a design document", since they describe
- "What the players are able to do in the game-world,
- How they do it,
- And how that leads to a compelling game experience" (p. 310).
World:
Mom and Natasha are always on the move, quickly:
- Running, Walking hurriedly, hiding and sneaking to keep moving (quietly)
- Keeps in line with the fast pace of the game
o Something is either always pushing them or pulling them
Pushes: swarming/growing number of enemies, overly powerful and
approaching enemies, very dangerous obstacle; fire
Pulls: NPC in need of rescue, solution or important resource that can greatly
help, family member in danger
Chaotic nature of the world and the randomness of the game
- Keeps You (Mom and Natasha) on their toes(on the lookout) and always moving
- If they take cover and assess the environment, it is for the purpose of needing to move
forward and very soon
The level of danger and threat the enemies pose promotes this fast pace feel
- A growing number of enemies; the system/enemy is "alive" and preying on you
Toughness and Physicality:
The level of physicality and toughness of the action forces Mom (mainly) to fight with
- The world (the layout of the world/level should be built as such). General incline navigation;
a literal climb of the game world
o Examples:
Pushing a loaded and heavy dumpster/ a car
Pulling a rope tied to something
Lifting Natasha up over a ledge, through a window/over the sill
Climbing a fence, a stone wall and pulling Mom's own body over
 Falling
Jumping and Catching onto something above head; to pull self up
Rouse's Game Mechanics continued:
More on Toughness and Physicality:
o Fighting
 Throwing punches and kicks
 Tackling enemies
Shoulder rams; against stiff doors, the backs of enemies
User of melee weapons; two by fours, lead pipes,
Warding off enemies; branch with fire at the end
Shooting fire arms and other projectile weapons
The enemies:
o There should not be any quick deaths for Mom. These fights and battles should feel
like a range between
Arena fights (Fight to the death); Gladiator style and drawn out
On the Prowl (Enemies are hunting for their prey; you)
o Gladiators, Pawns, Giants, etc. should feel like they are preying on you and toying
with their "food" before striking to kill.
General:
o General driving to evasive/defensive driving
o Stealth
 Waypoint and command system:
• Set locations for Natasha/Ben (always will accompany her-hand held)
and other humans to move
• Times/moments to move (On Mom's/Your command)
o Set point
o Move now
 Hiding/Sneaking/Crawling
o Dodging/Leaping out of dangers path
Game Mechanics continued:
The Senses defined; a system of sensory cues triggered by interactions, animations and
motions
1. Hearing/Sounds
a. Grunts, yells, moans, exhales, heavy breathing, straining sounds
b. Body thuds
c. Yells of pain
d. Blood gurgling
e. Breaking of glass
f. Sharp objects slicing through the air/Whipping of more blunt objects
2. Touching/Feeling
a. Feeling/reaching for sore/pained body parts, feeling for sides (cramps), her
racing heart beat
b. Leaning/Holding onto objects to rest
c. Trembling of surrounding movements; large steps from nearby Giant (Also a
sound)
3. Seeing
a. Sweat, Dirt/Soiled clothing and skin
b. Bright/"Hot" sun; squinted eyes
4. Tasting
a. "Blood; can hear tasting sounds and drawing hands to mouth to find blood
b. Finding and tasting and declaring, "It's chocolate"
5. Smelling
a. Nose sniffing sounds and declaration, "I smell this or that..."
List of Game Mechanics concepts:
1. Struggle animation
a. Slow length animations that demonstrate the difficulty to perform such actions
b. Coupled by The Senses; a system of sensory cues triggered by interactions,
animations and motions
2. Be the hero, build your army
a. It is in your favor to save people, they/the NPC/the game, will remember
b. Earn badges and stripes of heroism
3. Arena fights:
a. One on one mini-boss wrestling matches (with Gladiators)
4. On the Prowl:
a. Giving the sense that the player/You are being hunted; A slower intensity
5. Degree of damage; Gladiator types
6. Sensing the Encounters:
List of Game Mechanics concepts:
7. Waypoint and command system:
a. Set locations for Natasha/Ben (always will accompany her-hand held) and other
humans to move
b. Times/moments to move (On Mom's/Your command)
i. Set point
ii. Move now
8. Spidey Mom:
a. The player is automatically directed away from their main focus onto "what"
she's hearing
i. A car hurled through the air towards her
9. Driving:
a. The concept that even driving throughout this game will be something to rely on
and the personification of the station wagon; Izzy and inclusion that Izzy ("Is
older than Mom is and has served her and their family) is an entity that seems
interesting and appealing.
i. The Nebuchadnezzar in the matrix to this family
b. The driving should feel like a battle; not exactly a roller derby type feel, but there
will be a lot of bumps. In conclusion, this is vehicle should handle like a tank and
a suspension of belief is expected.
10. Inner Voice:
a. Instead of someone (an NPC) telling/commanding "you" what to do, Mom can
"tell" herself (you) what to do. "There's too many of them... Natti (aka Natasha),
Zach! We gotta go!
b. In an attempt to direct the player in a more organic and fresher way
c. Mom: To herself under her breath: "I hope Izzy starts??"
Hoping that referencing the station wagon (Izzy) will indicate to the player, that it's time to
leave this house and escape in the vehicle that brought you there.
Throughout the game, but especially in the "Drive home" level, we must speak to Izzy (station
wagon) as if it is a living thing and an extension of Mom and the family. We also want to form a
relationship with the player that this is going to be a major resource in this game; Establish
rapport with Izzy
List of Game Mechanics concepts continued:
Examples of The Struggle:
- For instance, picking up a heavy box of resources to put on a work bench
- Pushing a heavy dumpster to block a door that you escape from into a dark alley
o Having the door struggle against the dumpster as enemies fight to push it open
- Climbing up and over a high ledge
- Lifting/Hoisting Natasha up over the same ledge
o Hearing Mom grunt and strain through her throat and chest as she pulls her
niece up and over
o Hearing an exhaled yell as she fights with a Pawn that is on top of her as they
wrestle on the ground
o Hearing Mom moan in pain as she gets punched in the stomach
Using the world:
Inside the house/buildings:
- Furniture, cabinets, luggage, tables, bed pieces
On the Outside:
- Dumpsters, vehicles, etc.
Note: Using things that are moveable, stackable/pile-able to form barricades and obstacles in
your favor
Resource Depots:
- Fridges; I wonder why so many games have fridge models, but they are not
usable/interact-able. Food would be stored in here normally and will serve to refuel the
family
- Tool sheds; where you will find many tools and potential weapons; a chainsaw and in
one instance, a Katana.
- Pawn shop; a second katana (Pulp fiction homage)
No Lulls:
- Mom should not have more than 3 minutes of quiet time ever in this game.

Game Mechanics Theory:
Katie Salen and Eric Zimmerman: Rules of Play Mechanics:
- Actions: What can Mom interact with in the world
1. Vehicles
2. Weapons
3. Doors and gates
4. Other game characters
i. Attack enemies, work with Natasha and NPC's; benevolent teddy bears
and humans
5. Moveable objects; furniture (indoors objects), equipment (outdoors objects),
etc.
- Behaviors: What does Mom do?
1. Fight
2. Grind; physical abilities and maneuverability of the environment
3. Run, hide, and sneak
4. Guide; her family and NPC's
5. Drive
- Control mechanisms: What can Mom control?
1. People and their movement
2. Moveable objects
3. Izzy – Station Wagon (handles like a tank and is personified as a member of the
family)
Game Mechanics Theory continued:
Robin Hunicke, Marc LeBlanc and Robert Zubek: MDA Frame Work:
“These are the procedures and rules of your game.
Goal of your game, how players can and cannot try to achieve it
1. Accomplish the main mission of the level
2. Make the area safer if possible for you and your family; protect your family
3. If not possible, escape and survive safely with your family
4. Choose your battles and FIGHT!
5. Save as many children as you can
How can you not achieve your goals? What happens when they try:
1. You fail your main mission; You die
2. Fight everything; You die
3. Stay put in one place too long; you die
4. Save everyone; You die, you lose the most important ones
5. You go in guns blazing (Loudly); You will find it harder, and most likely die
Game Mechanics Theory continued:
Jesse Schell: The Art of Game Design, A Book of Lenses Game Mechanics definition:
For example, consider Space Invaders. When you shoot at an alien, it is the sets of game
mechanics that define how the bullet will travel, it’s speed and trajectory, what happens when
it hits the enemy and so on:
Assessing the situation and Encounters:
How will the player fight, get out of the situation, or avoid the situation all together.
- Choosing how to fight
1. Encountering small groups of non-hostile pawns
2. Encountering enraged pawns
3. A preying Gladiator
4. Arena style fights; 1 on 1
5. A Giant Bear
6. A cattle raid; combo of bears attempting to corral a group of humans; flanking
and funneling
7. Degree of damage capable
- Choosing when not to fight
1. A closed quarter; entrapment situation – you have to escape
2. Assess the Terrain
i. Availability for cover and stealth movement
ii. Waypoint and Command strategy
- Hiding and running
1. Using the environment, terrain, objects to hide along
2. Using these objects to sneak your family and group around

Game Play Mechanics IV - Problem Solving within Teddy Bears:
Well-defined problems:
Problem solving within this game will be defined as
Well-defined problems with
- Specific goals
- Clearly defined solution paths
- Clear expected solutions
These problems also allow for initial planning in some circumstances
Three Principles:
The three main principles for problem solving in this game will be defined as;
1. Providing the player all required resources in the close situation (problem set):
2. "Everything inter-actable" training: easily moveable bed, slightly tougher, but moveable
bookshelf that is pushed as you walk by it
3. Allow for multiple solutions; ways out of the problem
Example:
Defend the fort/Escape the home level:
Well-defined problems:
1. Specific goals
o Survive and limit damage to one's health throughout the level
o Defend the home for set periods of time/waves of enemies
Block all access points (Wave 1)
• Windows and doors
Fight off enemies that gain access to the home (Wave 2)
o Escape the home
2. Clearly defined solution paths
a. Draw Mom towards different rooms upstairs and to different windows
b. Draw Mom back downstairs to her children's call
c. Draw Mom out of the home and towards Izzy (station wagon)
Problem Solving within Teddy Bears:
Well-defined problems continued:
3. Clear expected solutions
a. Allow the player to see that their attempts are working
i. Allow the player to witness that barricading the windows and doors
makes a difference in blocking/delaying enemies
ii. Allow the player to see that killing off enemies gives you time to continue
to defending the home or stalls them from trying the same tactics
iii. Allow the player to see that they are overrun and have to give up the
situation
Three Principles:
Based off of the three principles for problem solving in this game
1. Providing the player all required resources in the close situation (problem set):
a. Moveable/inter-actable furniture
b. Shotgun, pistol, baseball bat
2. "Everything inter-actable" training: easily moveable bed, slightly tougher, but moveable
bookshelf that is pushed as you walk by it
3. Give multiple solutions; ways out of the problem
a. Maybe the Gladiator that is set to come through the front door, comes in
through the back door instead, or from upstairs. Regardless, the player inevitably
has three options to escape
i. Front door
ii. Back door
iii. Windows
Inner Voice:
Instead of someone (an NPC) telling/commanding "you" what to do, Mom can tell herself what
to do. "There's too many of them... Natti (aka Natasha), Zach! We gotta go!
