Greetings brothers and sisters in Christ!
It seems we have blinked and summer is over. In my house that means
football and conversations having to do with all things Steelers. In the life
of the church, it means activity! Things are getting moving for a new
school year. We have Rally Day on September 9th, which starts Sunday
school for youth and children. I will resume teaching Adult Sunday school
in the parlor, and Beer and Bible Study will begin the following Thursday,
September 13th at 6pm at O’Bryan’s. Both of these adult groups will be do-
ing a book study on Jason Lee’s “Torn.” “Torn” is a memoir of sorts in
which Lee shows his struggle with being both Christian and gay, especially
having grown up in a very conservative denomination.
Lee is incredibly open and honest with his thoughts and emotions, and the
book gives a human voice to these issues. It is my hope that this book study
will help us in our continuing conversation around becoming a Reconciling
in Christ congregation. The sessions will be done in such a way that
participants don’t have to read the chapters, but it is my hope that we will
read them together. And for those who cannot attend the sessions, but
would like to participate, overviews of the chapters will be made available
online.
May the peace of God, which passes all understanding, guide your hearts
and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Blessings,
Pastor Karen

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS) is pleased to announce
it is a recipient of a generous $35,000 donation from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America
(ELCA) to support LIRS’s continued work with families who were separated at the border under the
Administration’s “zero tolerance” policy.
Rooted in Lutherans’ faithful and caring response to the challenges facing uprooted peoples, LIRS
celebrates a strong collaborative relationship with the ELCA. LIRS and the ELCA have long part-
nered together under a vision for congregations to be welcoming and generous centers for mission
and ministry—and we continue that work together as we help families transition from the traumatic
experience of separation.
“The ELCA is committed to the reunification of families who have been cruelly separated as they
crossed our borders in search of safety and protection from violence,” said ELCA Presiding Bishop
Elizabeth A. Eaton. “This gift to our Lutheran partner will provide direct support for bringing these
families back together.”
This donation from the ELCA will help provide families with immediate food and shelter, counsel-
ing, and access to legal and community services, as well as extended support as they adjust to life in
their new communities.
“We are so grateful to the ELCA for this urgent commitment to welcome the stranger,” said Pat
Nichols, Interim President and CEO of LIRS. “It will go a long way in helping families begin to heal
from this traumatic experience. We look forward to continued opportunities to expand our partner-
ship that has already provided so much for families seeking refuge in the United States.”
Founded in 1939, Lutheran
Immigration and Refugee Service is
one of the largest refugee resettlement
agencies in the United States. It is
nationally recognized for its leadership
advocating with refugees, asylum
seekers, unaccompanied children,
immigrants in detention, families
fractured by migration and other
vulnerable populations. Through
nearly 80 years of service and
advocacy, LIRS has helped over
500,000 migrants and refugees
rebuild their lives in America.

you have been waiting for just the right time, now is the time! Great music reading ability is not
required. Commitment is. For further information, ask any current member or Ron Blackley,
Music Director ([email protected] or 419-606-0696)

Food Bank
On September 30, during service, we will be doing a special food collection for
the Food Bank. We are working with Associated Charities to see what their
currents needs are and will provide that list to members in the Sunday bulletins
leading up to that day. As always, any and all food donations are accepted at
any time for the food bank. Contact Dan Bishop with any questions.
DID YOU KNOW... you can be assured that every dollar donated to
Associated Charities stays in Ashland County!
