The Chalk Paint by Annie Sloan is used for painting furniture without stripping, priming or sanding. This classis taught by the owner Bahia Akerele. Information aboutall the classes offered and registration is found online atwww.onthepurplecouch.com/events.
The shop first opened in 2012 in downtown Silver Springas a consignment and home décor shop – featuring thefamous Chalk Paint by decorative painter Annie Sloan.Bahia was hand-selected to be astockist/retailer and instructor for the popular Chalk Paint.
Bahia Akerele was inspired to be a business woman ever since her aunt Susan Akerele Peeblesstarted her day care centers inCanada in the early 1980s.
Then after a career in social welfare, working with federal, state, and local municipalities providing services to children andfamilies, and a 7-year stint as aconsultant with the Annie E CaseyFoundation in Baltimore, On thePurple Couch was born.
In 2013 Bahia opened the revamped shop in Kensington, focusing almost exclusively on furniture painting workshopsand creative classes for adults and ’tweens, and retailingChalk Paint, painted furniture and home decor.
"Floral Arranging with Wildflowers" using the hand-tiedmethod taught by Kathy Jentz, the editor of WashingtonGardener Magazine, will be held at the end of September."Parent and Child Drawing" is another popular workshopthat is taught by art teacher Nadene Wright.
On the Purple Couch is always looking for new instructorsand class ideas, and would love to put a class together basedon what participants wanted to learn or share with others. They love being part of the Kensington community, and inJuly hosted their first open house with free demonstrationsand treats for their neighbors.
Bahia would love to host you or your business for a creativeworkshop or team-building retreat – in their space or yours.Visit or be in touch:On the Purple Couch, A Place to CreateBahia Akerele, MSW4228 Howard AvenueKensington, MD 20895301-896-0010bahia@OnthePurpleCouch.comwww.OnThePurpleCouch.com
