Seven Weeks later, on the 6th day of Sivan, the Israelites meet God at Mount Sinai at an event we know as “The Revelation”. We celebrate this event with the holiday of Shavuot. Moses went up Mount Sinai for 40 days to get the Torah from God. In what was perhaps the greatest dunderhead moment (at least up until that time), the Israelites became frightened by Moses’ long absence and they built and prayed to the golden calf. When Moses came down on the 17th day of Tammuz, he was so enraged that he threw down the Ten Commandments. This date is a fast day and begins a three-week countdown known as the “Three Weeks of Affliction” which culminates on the 9th day of the Av. This day is Tisha B’Av and is recognized in our tradition as a day when bad things have happened to the Jewish people. After meting out punishment, Moses went back up Mount Sinai for another 40 days to pray and to ask God to forgive the Israelites. This is the beginning of “Seven Weeks of Consolation”. At the end of the month of Av, Moses returned to the Israelites. God had given Moses permission to write a new set of Ten Commandments, but did not grant forgiveness to the Israelites. (This is important) On the first day of the month of Elul, Moses Schlepped back up Mount Sinai for yet another 40 days. (He must have been in very good shape.)Moses was on Sinai for the First Day of Tishrei, Rosh Hashanah, and began to ask God, in earnest, for forgiveness. Our Tradition tells us that on the 10th day of Tishrei, Yom Kippur, God finally granted forgiveness. As we join together this Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur let us remember that it is not just about us, here and now. Our prayers and community building today stands on the shoulders of each and every ancestor who came before us, as future High Holiday cycles will stand on ours.
Shana Tova U’metukah – A Good and Sweet New Year Rabbi Michael S. Jay
The High Holidays provide a paradigm for spiritual renewal and growth. Through the holiday cycle we come in contact with our selves, our communities, and God. On Rosh Hashanah we welcome the New Year with Joy and anticipation; on Yom Kippur we confront our mortality with trepidation and hope. On Sukkoth, we live in temporary huts that symbolize our fragility but enable us to reconnect with nature and with God. On Simchat Torah we rejoin our community and God and Dance with the Torah as a sign that we are joyfully reunited. This is an all too brief summary of the holiday cycle that is woefully short of good explanation and explication. However, I leave it like this with a purpose. You see our tradition provides a historical context for the holiday cycle. To the Rabbis what we do at this time of the year is attached to the actual events of our ancestors. Herein I will attempt provide a very brief synopsis of the history. About 3,300 years ago, on the 15th day of the month of Nissan, the Nation of Israel was born. We recall at our Passover Seders every year that, through myriad miracles, God freed the Israelites from slavery.
WORDS FROM THE RABBI

Our most important accomplishment this past year was engaging Rabbi Michael Jay to be our Rabbi. He and Sheri have brought a new sense of energy to the JCC, and we are so glad that they are part of us.
We are in the midst of what I believe to be our busiest activities year ever. A look at our 2 page Summer Calendar Schedule mailed to every member, or the very colorful 20 page Summer Program Book easily proves the point. I am pleased to report that the activities were very successful, and many of them meant extra income for our congregation. While she had lots of help, Program chairperson Lori Shomer made it all possible and successful.
T H E P R E S I D E N T ’ S M E S S A G E
Thanks to Mickey Sherry, our Building and Grounds chairman, with help from many, but especially from Ron Marr, our physical structure had many improvements or problems solved. They also had to keep up with almost constant changes in the arrangement of chairs and 3 types of tables for all the events.
Our membership continues to grow, (40 in past year) but there are still a lot of Jewish people in the area who are not members. We have a building and a congregation of which we can be very proud, and I ask each member to talk us up and encourage others to join the significant Jewish presence in the area.
Attendance at Friday eve and Saturday morning services also continue to grow. If you have not participated in this aspect of our congregation, do yourself a favor and come to a service to gain from the wonderful job that Rabbi Jay does in leading and explaining the services.
While many members pitch in and help a lot, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Vivian Fitts and her kitchen crew who provide Onegs and Kiddushes every week as well as the many other food venues; Rose Valentine who keeps us informed with a Shabbat Reminder each week, and the general community informed with strategic placement of ads in local media; Carole Nunberg who takes complete charge of our High Holiday seats program and the Book of Remembrance; Lynn Berkowitz who not only assumed the responsibilities of Treasurer and Bazaar Chairman when these were needed, but also runs our Religious School program; and Judy Smith who keeps things going in the winter and when I am not around.
Also, I am pleased to announce that since our 2012 congregation meeting we have repaid eight $25,000 loans for a total of $200,000. Of our original $500,000 borrowed, we now only have a total of $50,000 still owed.
Most of us who were members during construction contributed generously to the Building Fund. There are many improvements and additions we still want to do on our ‘Wish List’. We don’t have a mandatory Building Fund commitment, but I ask that our new members and those that haven’t participated join the large list of those who have.
And as usual, my plea for additional volunteers. Whether it is ‘on occasion’ or several hours almost every week, we have many members who get satisfaction from helping with one or more activities. As we continue to grow, and to expand our activities schedule, we can always use more help. Please call me, Judy Smith, or one of our chairpersons, and let us know that you can help.
Our Board of Directors works very hard. They wrestle with a lot of problems and must make many decisions, usually after much discussion, and not passed unanimously. It is certainly not a group of YES people. Monthly meetings start at 7 pm, and while we like them to be over by 9:30, they often run until 10:15 or 10:30. And if you aren’t in the area for a meeting, you can fully participate by conference call. We don’t ask Board members for any additional financial commitment, but we do expect them to participate in many activities and hopefully chair at least one. If anyone would like to be considered for a future Board position, please let Judy Smith or me know. I want to publicly thank the Board members for their work, their support, and their dedication.
Shalom, Don Pripstein

I have been asked," Where are the youth books?" The answer is that they are now housed in Classroom B, at the south end of the building, next to the office. The room will be open and the shelves available anytime there is a possibility of youngsters being at services.
We get gifts from a variety of sources. Dick Jeffries, a local flooring merchant and a friend of the JCC, brought in two lovely books. Linda Feaster, the librarian from Surf City, recently added three valuable books. Andrea Kessler, a friend of the Jay family, and a teacher at B'nai Jeshrun in Short Hills, sent as a whopping forty-five! The Holocaust Museum in Washington sent Lynn Berkowitz three impressive volumes which are now displayed on our western wall, along with some others from our regular
collection. We also have a published edition of essays by a former member, Irv Newman, which regularly appeared in The Sandpaper. As usual, I suggest some new books we do not as yet have. WOLF TRAP, by Alan Simon, a page- turner for the beach, and UNORTHODOX, by Deborah Feldman, an account of disillusionment.

The Book Report
Our Confirmation classes have been the mainstay of our enrollment for the past few years. This year we have several students preparing for confirmation, 2 students preparing for Bar Mitzvah and 2 in the lower level. To meet the needs of the families we have resumed Hebrew school classes on Thursdays at 4:30 on the mainland at the McKinley School. Sunday
classes will be held at the JCC in our lovely classrooms. I have been the Educational Director since 1989 and have witnessed this decreasing enrollment. What are we to do about it? I know that there are unaffiliated families in southern Ocean County because the students tell me about other public school students that celebrate the Jewish holidays. I need help in reaching them. EVERY CHILD DESERVES A JEWISH EDUCATION but how do we reach them? If you have any suggestions or know of a family please let me know by email: [email protected] or by phone 609-709-3160. Lynn Berkowitz, Educational director, Jewish Community Center of LBI.

SHOP-RITE GIFT CARDS ARE HERE!
Help the JCC earn “free” money by purchasing Shop-Rite Scrip from the JCC Office during normal business hours. For every $1,000 of Shop-Rite Scrip the JCC sells, we earn $50. If you shop at Shop-Rite regularly, be sure to stop by the JCC office first and pick yours up today. Or use these $25 cards as gifts to others for a happy occasion, or to someone in need. This is an extremely easy way for the JCC to raise much needed revenue. If every JCC member purchased just $250 of Scrip over the summer, we could raise over $1,200 for the JCC. Just imagine what we could raise if everyone used these for all their grocery shopping there, or as gifts to give to others.
PROGRAMMING INFORMATION Please contact me this fall to discuss any new ideas you may have for next summer’s programs. Summer events will need to be in place by January/February 2014 in order to create next year’s program guide.
If anyone would be interested in being a part of next year’s program planning or execution, or if there’s an idea you would like to take the lead on, please let me know.
For September through May programs, please contact Judy Smith at 609-618-4443.
Looking forward to summer 2014!!!

JULY & AUGUST BAZAAR UPDATE The first Bazaar on July 10 was rather uneventful weather-wise. Being a relatively new venue the vendors had to become familiar with our lay out. It was a little tricky getting the vans into their spaces along the back fence and we had a few hairy minutes but with the help of Mickey Sherry and Ron Marr we were able to settle everyone into their spot. The second Bazaar was sched-uled for August 14th. Both Bazaars were well attended. The Sisterhood kitchen was fabulous; serving up hamburgers, hotdogs and sandwiches of all kinds. In addition the outside tables, music, Freckles the Clown, Kettle Corn Popcorn, smoothies and fudge added a festive air to the event. We had many new and varied vendors bringing up-scale merchandise as well as a variety of wares. We again were able to sell shoes donated by Bob Cook with a wonderful addition of linens donated by David Shatz. We made well over $1,000 from these donations. Thanks to Judy Smith and her helpers for manning Classroom B where they became “shopkeepers”. Many volunteers manned the table in the foyer where they successfully sold cookbooks, silly banzs, and collected donations. Considering the fewer number of vendor spaces at the JCC, our profit was very close to what we made at the Bi-Centennial Park in 2011 and that dollar difference could not make up for the pride we all shared in showing off our building. This event is not run by one or two people. It started with the help of Ron Marr and Mickey Sherry who helped tape out the social hall as well as measure and mark the parking lot. How can you thank those hearty souls who rose before daylight to greet the vendors at 5am? Kudos to our early risers Reina Levy, Ron Marr, Mickey Sherry, Karen Schwing, Melanie Powitz and, our fearless leader, Don Pripstein. Thanks to Susan Sheehan accompanied by Jared as well as Stacy Vreeland, Helene and Allan Gordon, Arnie Galer, and Eleanor Elefant who got vendors signatures. Without publicity no one would have known to come so a special thanks to Karen Schwing for assisting Mrs. B in putting up the signs and distributing flyers from the Lighthouse to Holgate. A special thinks to those brave and strong members that stayed to pull up the blue tape and clean up.
A special thanks to Lieutenant Kevin Mahon and his team from the Long Beach Island Township Police Department who kept us safe and orderly.
All in all our two Bazaars were a huge success for the JCC as well as the vendors. I am looking forward to the BAZAARS OF 2014.

TD BANK Affinity Program TD Bank has a program offering an easy way for non-profit organizations to raise additional money. It will make an annual contribution to us based on the average balances in our members’ accounts. Here is an opportunity to raise up to several thousand dollars each year with no out-of-pocket cost from any of us. We must have at least 50 participants with new or existing checking and/or savings accounts, or CDs at TD Bank. Checking Accounts at Businesses also count. All we have to do is have our members let the bank know that they are JCC participants. The Bank will do the rest. Your privacy continues as is. The Bank will not divulge any individual member’s information to JCC or anyone else. Please call your TD Bank office and let them know that you are a JCC participant. PLEASE REGISTER ALL YOUR PERSONAL ACCOUNTS AS WELL AS YOUR BUSINESS CHECKING ACCOUNTS, AND DO IT NOW, SO THE AFFINITY PROGRAM FOR JCC CAN COMMENCE. This will begin as soon as TD Bank has 50 sign up from JCC of LBI.

Summary of the Board Meeting on Tuesday, June 11, 2013Attendees: Lynn Berkowitz, Harold Farin, Sherry Fruchterman, Barry Goldman, Rabbi Michael Jay, Eileen Levin, Carole Nunberg, Don Pripstein, Jeri Riffle, Toby Schwait, Karen Schwing, Jeff Shapiro, Mickey Sherry, Lori Shomer, Judy Smith, Stu Snyder, Rose Valentine
• J. Shapiro reported that we had $47,000 in the bank in the Building Fund at the end of May. We received $30,000 from a donor in early June giving us a total of $77,000. $50,000 was recently sent to lenders leaving us with $27,000 of which $7,000 is needed for the Tree of Life. We now owe $50,000 to lenders.
• It was agreed that the Rebuild Committee is no longer needed, but the Building Fund will continue. Eventually, payment for repairs will come out of the general operations fund.
• J. Shapiro reported that he expects a report this week from the accountant, Michael Gross, regarding his review of the JCC financial records.
• R. Valentine noted that the Tree of Life looks gorgeous and 9 leaves have already been sold.• The board discussed a suggestion that we revise the lighting control system so that lights in the restrooms,
hallways and foyer do not automatically go on when someone enters the space on Shabbat. It was noted that this system was designed for safety reasons and the board agreed not to make any changes at this time.
• A letter will go out in the beginning of July regarding the 50/50 raffle. The drawing will take place at Break the Fast.
• S. Fruchterman reported that cabinets for the office are coming soon. Plans are to order a case for the Sisterhood Gift Shop.
• L. Shomer reported that work is in progress preparing for the Sock Hop and the Zumba sign will be put up shortly. L. Shomer and L. Berkowitz are preparing a video to put on Youtube to draw attention to programs planned.
• M. Sherry reported that the yahrtzeit boards are hung. Bannett will repair the seams in the columns in the sanctuary. Repairs will be made to the driveway when we have good weather to pour cement.
• J. Smith reported that there are 9 board members whose term expires this August. All, but one of the 9 (Ron Rosner), have agreed to continue as board members. We are looking for people who are willing to take on responsibilities for this leadership position. Names of candidates were requested.
• T. Schwait reported that there are 10 new members so far this year. She is looking at purchasing new nametags for services and considering storage options. The 2013 Membership Directory will be finished soon and distributed at the Welcome Back Brunch. A “Meet and Greet” event is planned at the home of B. Goldman on July 28 to attract potential new members.
• R. Valentine reported that a number of JCC events are being publicized including the Sock Hop on June 29 and the speaker on Israel scheduled for June 23.
• R. Valentine reported that 30 people, including new members and their ambassadors, attended the successful Ambassador Program and havdalah service on Saturday, June 8.
• L. Berkowitz reported that spaces are sold out for the Bazaars.• J. Shapiro reported that 4 spots are available inside and 10 spots outside for the Art Festival.• C. Nunberg reported that the bulk mailing for the High Holidays has gone out.• J. Riffle reported that Elizabeth Beyer from Barnegat High School, Amanda Anderson from Pinelands High
School and Jessica Schwing from Southern Regional High School were this year’s recipients of the JCC scholarships. J. Riffle, Scott Goldstein and Reina Levy made the presentations.
• T. Schwait noted that the 1st Coffee & Conversation event will be held this Monday at the library.• J. Smith noted that the Arts Council very much appreciated being able to meet at the JCC on June 4.

Continued from Page 16• D. Pripstein reported that the Rabbi will be starting Thursday night adult education classes on June 27. June
28 is the beginning of the Scholars at the Shore weekends. An adult Bar/Bat Mitzvah class is also being didscussed.

Summary of the Board Meeting on Tuesday, July 16, 2013 Attendees: Lynn Berkowitz, Harold Farin, Sherry Fruchterman, Rabbi Michael Jay, Richard Morgan, Carole Nunberg, Don Pripstein, Jeri Riffle, Ron Rosner, Toby Schwait, Karen Schwing, Jeff Shapiro, Mickey Sherry, Lori Shomer, Judy Smith
• J. Shapiro reported that a law was passed, retroactive to previous years, that sets the threshold for revenue at $500,000 rather than $250,000 for non-profit audits. Given our annual revenue is below the new threshold, we no longer need an audit.
• The Finance Committee recommends that Michael Gross provide an annual review of the JCC financial records at a cost of about $3,900/year. R. Rosner recommends that Michael Gross provide his report on the review of the JCC financial records on his letterhead. The Finance Committee recommends that a balance sheet be part of the financial package provided by Michael Gross and that a balance sheet be issued to the board on a quarterly basis.
• The following items will be presented at the annual congregation meeting on August 11: the balance sheet from year-end 12/31/2012, the Profit/Loss report for 12/31/2012 and the cash flow report.
• J. Shapiro noted that there is one federal ID# shared by the JCC, the Building Fund and Sisterhood.• The Finance Committee will decide what expenses should come out of the general fund vs. the building fund
from this point forward.• J. Shapiro reported that the JCC flood zone was recently changed from V9 to AE9. This is still a preliminary
rating.• D. Pripstein presented a draft wish list for discussion by the board. Plans are to present a final wish list to a
donor wanting to make a significant gift. A subcommittee was formed to discuss further, finalize the list, categorize items and provide cost estimates.
• J. Shapiro reported that the Building Fund has approximately $21,000. We expect a contribution of about another $30,000.
• S. Fruchterman reported much progress on building beautification including the addition of new artwork in the office and library, installation of new office furniture and the purchase of 2 glass display cabinets for a Sisterhood gift shop.
• R. Morgan reported that the 50/50 raffle tickets were sent out and money is coming in.• L. Shomer reported that a mailing with notice of the August Congregation meeting included flyers for the
upcoming Open Mic Night and Uncle Floyd.• M. Sherry reported that repairs will start on the seams in the columns tomorrow. He will meet with the owner
of the condo next to the Rabbi’s condo to discuss shared landscaping between the units. Plans are to have handicap parking in front of the building and curbs by the handicapped parking near the ramp will be painted. M. Sherry has found
a vendor that provides paper supplies without shipping charges saving us about $500/year.• J. Smith reported that everyone whose term expires this August has agreed to return to the board except R.
Rosner. Susan Sheehan was proposed as a nominee to take this spot. Thanks were offered to R. Rosner for his years of service. No additional nominations were suggested. Therefore, the slate of nominees will be Susan Sheehan and the 8 returning board members.

for in the social hall. • D. Pripstein noted that attendance has been great at Friday night and Saturday morning services. Rabbi Jay
offered thanks to Bonnie Farin and Sisterhood for their help with the first 2 of 3 Scholar Programs. The programs went incredibly well. He also discussed having retreats in the off-season.
• Plans for the annual congregation meeting were discussed. Presentations will include the Rabbi’s report, Treasurer’s report and President’s report along with select committee reports. The meeting will be followed by an Open House.
