How are we doing?• Context: To make appropriate writing choices based upon a critical

understanding of audience, voice, genre, and rhetorical situation.• Argument: To produce complex and persuasive claims that matter

in an academic context.• Analysis: To build and support your argument through a

purposeful analysis of evidence and assumptions.• Conversation: To use research and analysis to situate your

argument in relation to a larger academic conversation.• Organization: To organize your analysis logically using a strategic

line of inquiry and effective transitions. • Revision: To develop strategies for identifying substantial issues in

your writing and revising in order to strengthen the overall argument.

Sequences

• First Sequence: – We worked on the essential elements of

academic: Claim, Analysis, Line of Inquiry, Conversation… Argumentative Writing.

• Second Sequence: – We will learn how to assess arguments according

to how they work in their contexts! This is called Rhetorical Analysis

Two-Pronged Attack!

• Argumentative Writing: – You will continue to practice your skills in analysis

and academic conversation in your Research Projects. The end goal is exactly the same as Major Paper #1 : 5-7 page, argument paper.

• Rhetorical Analysis:– You will learn how to evaluate rhetorical situations

and choices. You will learn to understand and assess what makes an argument persuasive.

Research Project (MAJOR PAPER)

• Write a claim-based, analysis paper that uses 2 secondary sources.

• Make an argument about some element of contemporary monster culture. We used Frankenstein to try and understand the late 19th century. Your goal here is to pick something that helps you to understand the here and now.

(ok – the last 30 years or so) • Work groups will help you to develop your arguments.

– For Fri, you should be ready to present your object of analysis and have a discussion about the topics you would like to apply to it.

Choosing your Topic

• Pick out of your own interests, either topically or in pop culture!

• Consult your instructor and your TA, especially if your interest is in a particular topic or historical moment and you need suggestions for an object of inquiry

Rhetorical Analysis (SHORT PAPERS)

• Rhetorical Reading is about learning how to THINK like a writer.– Understands “argument” more generally (not just

academic) and as situated in relation to particular situations and particular audiences.

– Looks to make informed writing choices in order to communicate ideas most effectively.

• Instead of asking “WHAT is the author arguing” we will ask “HOW and WHY are they arguing it?”

Reading Arguments:
