Personal and Political Papers of Senator Barry M. Goldwater – page 112 Arizona Historical Foundation, www.ahfweb.org , 480-965-3283 Series II. 1964 Presidential Campaign, 1961-1965 Scope and Content: The material for this series derives from multiple sources in addition to the documents donated by Senator Goldwater. These include Goldwater campaign workers, office staff, family members, friends, fans, and associates. The following individuals’ made significant contributions, especially relating to state campaigns, speeches, news clippings, photo albums, and memorabilia: Joseph H. Bastien, Thomas Dunlavy, Bert Fireman, Donald and Michael Goldwater, Eleanor Higgins, Theodore Humes, William Middendorf, Adah Morgan, Sharon Spellman, William Quinn, Robert Stahl, Peter M. Bodnar, and Lester W. Ruffner. Goldwater correspondence with a number of these individuals extended beyond this campaign and can be found in Series I. Personal-Correspondence. There are significant gaps within this series. In 1967, Stephen Shadegg, a long time Republican Party worker, Goldwater Senate Campaign Manager, and Regional Campaign Director for Western States, sold various campaign materials to the University of Texas. See the guide to the Stephen Shadegg/Barry Goldwater Collection at University of Texas, Austin http,//www.lib.utexas.edu/taro/utcah/00096/cah-00096.html for further information. Senator Goldwater’s post-election correspondence was voluminous but little remains in print. Most of that correspondence is captured on microfilm. See Series V, Media Files-Microfilm. The microfilm has been converted to searchable compact discs which are available in the reading room. Speech writers for the Goldwater-Miller Campaign were Tony Smith and Karl Hess. See Series I. Personal-Correspondence for Karl Hess. Few Smith files can be found in this collection. Very few speech drafts remain. Some background for speech material was borrowed from previous Goldwater Senate campaigns and can also be found in Series I. Personal-Campaigns. Many speeches are embedded within newsletters and news releases found in the Goldwater for President Committee and the Republican National Committee. The three bound volumes of speeches, while incomplete, represent speech highlights. These were a gift from Denison Kitchel, 1964 Presidential Campaign Manager. Few Kitchel files can be found in this series. See Series I. Personal–Alpha Files for other personal correspondence. Kitchel papers relating to the Free Society Association can be found at the Hoover Institute, Stanford University. See also the Dean Burch Papers (Arizona Historical Foundation FM MSS 142) for extensive documentation of the 1964 Presidential Campaign. Senator Goldwater selected Burch as the Chairman of the Republican National Committee in 1964, and this collection contains extensive RNC executive, planning, publicity, and candidates’ schedule and travel files. It also includes Senator Goldwater’s post election 1964 and 1965 correspondence. Included in this series are rare, unpublished Commerce Committee Prints Vol. 1, 3, and 5. Because the Senate Commerce Committee has jurisdiction over communications, it was proposed that media coverage on the 1964 Presidential Campaign for the first time be aggregated and printed as a federal document. Funding to complete the project failed. What remains are galley proofs. This is likely the most comprehensive record of speeches, radio and television appearances, floor remarks and news items from the 1964 Presidential Campaign. There were no presidential debates between Barry M. Goldwater and Lyndon B. Johnson. The nearly 5,000 pages cover the speeches, public appearances, and major radio and television broadcasts of the Johnson-Humphrey and Goldwater-Miller campaigns. The galley proofs are indexed and
