Base

Series Quiet towers are galvanized steel, factory assembled, crossflow coolingtowers, designed to serve airconditioning and refrigeration systemsas well as light to medium industrialprocess loads on clean water. Theyevolve from a factory-assembledconcept of towers, and incorporate all ofthe design advancements that ourcustomers have found valuable. TheSeries Quiet has been designedspecifically for sound control andtonnage density and represents thecurrent state of the art in this coolingtower category.

This booklet not only relates thelanguage to use in describing anappropriate Series Quiet cooling tower— but also defines why certain itemsand features are important enough tospecify with the intention of insistingupon compliance by all bidders. The lefthand column of pages 5 thru 21provides appropriate text for the variousspecification paragraphs, whereas theright hand column comments on themeaning of the subject matter andexplains its value.

Pages 5 thru 11 indicate thoseparagraphs which will result in thepurchase of a basic cooling tower — onethat accomplishes the specified thermalperformance, but which will lack manyoperation — and maintenance-enhancing accessories and features thatare usually desired by those personswho are responsible for the continuedand continuing operation of the systemof which the tower is part. It will alsoincorporate those standard materialswhich testing and experience has provento provide acceptable longevity innormal operating conditions.

Pages 12 thru 21 provide paragraphsintended to add those features, components, and materials that willcustomize the tower to meet the user'srequirements.

Space does not permit definition andexplanation of all of the possible optionsthat can be applied to the Series Quiet.Trane realizes that you, the purchaser, must be happy with the tower'scharacteristics, and we are prepared toprovide — or provide for — anyreasonable enhancement that you arewilling to define and purchase. Yourneeds will become part of Trane'scontinuing evolution of this product line.

Base

Specifications

1.0 Base:

1.1 Provide an induced draft, crossflowtype, f actory assembled, film fill, industrial duty, galvanized steelcooling tower situated as shown onthe plans. The limiting overalldimensions of the tower shall be_____ wide, _____ long, and _____high. Total operating horsepower ofall fans shall not exceed ____ hp,consisting of ___ @ _____ hpmotor(s). Tower shall be similar andequal in all respects to Trane Model____________.

Specification ValueYour specification base establishes thetype, configuration, base material, andphysical limitations of the cooling towerto be quoted. During the planning andlayout stages of your project, you willhave focused your attention on a coolingtower selection that fits your spaceallotment, and whose power usage isacceptable. Limitations on physical sizeand total operating horsepower avoidthe introduction of unforeseenoperational and site-related influences.Specifying the number of cells, and themaximum fan hp/cell will work to youradvantage.

The benefit of crossflow towers is thatthey are inherently easy to operate, access, and maintain. Unlike counterflowtowers, crossflow towers have aspacious plenum between banks of fillfor easy access to all of the tower’sinternal components, and the waterdistribution system is adjacent to the fandeck.

COOL-PRC002-EN6

Performance

Specifications

2.0 Thermal Performance:

2.1 The tower shall be capable of cooling_____ GPM (L/s) of water from ____ °F(°C) to _____ °F (°C) at a designentering air wet-bulb temperature of_____ °F (°C), and its thermal ratingshall be Certified by the CoolingTower Institute.

3.0 Performance Warranty:

3.1 CTI Certification notwithstanding, thecooling tower manufacturer shallguarantee that the tower suppliedwill meet the specified performanceconditions when the tower isinstalled according to plan. If,because of a suspected thermalperformance deficiency, the ownerchooses to conduct an on-sitethermal performance test under thesupervision of a qualified, disinterested third party inaccordance with CTI or ASMEstandards during the first year ofoperation; and if the tower fails toperform within the limits of testtolerance; then the cooling towermanufacturer will pay for the cost ofthe test and will make suchcorrections as are appropriate andagreeable to the owner tocompensate for the performancedeficiency.

4.0 Design Loading:

4.1 The tower and all its componentsshall be designed to withstand awind load of 30 psf (1.44kPa), as wellas a .3g seismic load. It shall bedesigned to withstand shipping andhoisting loads of 2g horizontal and3g vertical. The fan deck and hotwater basin covers shall be designedfor 50 psf (2.42 kPa) live load or a 200lb. (91 kg) concentrated load.Handrails, where specified, shall becapable of withstanding a 200 lb.(890 N) concentrated live load in anydirection, and shall be designed inaccordance with OSHA guidelines.

Specification ValueCTI Certificationmeans that the towerhas been tested underoperating conditionsand found to performas rated by themanufacturer under thosecircumstances. It assures the buyer thatthe tower is not intentionally orinadvertently undersized by themanufacturer.

However, CTI certification alone is notsufficient to assure you that the towerwill perform satisfactorily in yoursituation. Certification is establishedunder relatively controlled conditions, and towers seldom operate under suchideal circumstances. They are affectedby nearby structures, machinery, enclosures, effluent from other towers, etc. Responsible and knowledgeablebidders will take such site-specific effectsinto consideration in selecting the tower— however the specifier must insist bythe written specification that thedesigner/manufacturer guarantee this“real world” performance. Anyreluctance on the part of the biddershould cause you some concern.

The indicated design values are theminimum allowables under accepteddesign standards. They give youassurance that the tower can be shipped, handled, hoisted — and ultimatelyoperated in a normal cooling towerenvironment. Most Series Quiet modelswill withstand significantly higher windand seismic loads. If your geographiclocation dictates higher wind load orseismic load values, please make theappropriate changes, after discussionwith your Trane sales representative.

Construction

Specifications

5.0 Construction:

5.1 Except where otherwise specified, allcomponents of the cooling towershall be fabricated of heavy-gaugesteel, protected against corrosion byG-235 galvanizing. The tower shallbe capable of withstanding waterhaving a pH of 6.5 to 8.0; a chloridecontent (NaCl) up to 500 ppm; asulfate content (SO4) up to 250 ppm;a calcium content (CaCO3) up to 500ppm; silica (SiO2) up to 150 ppm; anddesign hot water temperatures up to125°F (51.7°C). The circulating watershall contain no oil, grease, fattyacids, or organic solvents.

5.2 The specifications, as written, areintended to indicate those materialsthat will be capable of withstandingthe above water quality in continuingservice, as well as the loadsdescribed in paragraph 4.1. They areto be regarded as minimumrequirements. Where componentmaterials peculiar to individual towerdesigns are not specified, themanufacturers shall take the abovewater quality and load carryingcapabilities into account in theselection of their materials ofmanufacture.

5.3* The tower shall include all designand material modifications necessaryto meet the fire rating requirementsof Factory Mutual. The productproposed shall be listed in the FMApproval Guide, latest edition.

*Most Series Quiet models. SeeSpecification Value at right.

Specification ValueIn the history of cooling towers, no othercoating for carbon steel has exhibitedthe success and longevity ofgalvanization in exposure to the normalcooling tower water quality defined atleft. No paints or electrostatically-appliedcoatings, however exotic they may be,can approach galvanization's history ofsuccess.

Except for those unusual operatingsituations where the circulating watermay be so laden with suspended solids, algae, fatty acids, product fibers, activeorganisms reflected in BOD, and the likethat plugging of the fill is a probability, reasonable attention to the constructionmaterials and/or their coatings is all thatis normally required.

If extended longevity of the tower isrequired — or unusually harsh operatingconditions are expected — considerspecifying stainless steel as either thebase construction material, or thematerial utilized for specific componentsof your choice. See Stainless SteelOptions on page 12.

This could have avery beneficialeffect upon yourfire insurancepremiums. Towersnot able to meetFM requirementsmay require the inclusion of a fireprotection sprinkler system to achieve acomparable level of insurance premiumcost. 123 Series Quiet models are FMapproved — check with your Trane salesrepresentative for approved models.

Fan(s) shall be driventhrough a right angle, industrial duty, oil lubricated, geared speed reducerthat requires no oil changes for thefirst five (5) years of operation.

(alternate)* 6.1 Fan(s) shall be propeller-type, incorporating heavy aluminumalloy blades and electrogalvinizedhubs. Blades shall be individuallyadjustable. Fan(s) shall be driventhrough a one-piece multi-groove,solid back V-type belt, pulleys, andtapered roller bearings. Bearingsshall be rated at an L10 life of 40,000hours, or greater.

*Currently available on Models TQ8304through TQ8309.

6.2 Motor(s) shall be ____ hp maximum,TEFC, 1.15 service factor, variabletorque, and specially insulated forcooling tower duty. Speed andelectrical characteristics shall be______ RPM, single-winding, ___phase, ____ hertz, ____ volts. Motorshall operate in the shaft-horizontalposition, and nameplate horsepowershall not be exceeded at designoperation.

6.3 The complete mechanical equipmentassembly for each cell shall besupported by a rigid, welded, hot dipgalvanized steel structural supportthat resists misalignment betweenthe motor and the gear reducer. Themechanical equipment assemblyshall be warranted against any failurecaused by defects in materials andworkmanship for no less than five (5)years following the date of towershipment. This warranty shall coverthe fan, speed reducer, drive shaftand couplings, and the mechanicalequipment support. The electricmotor shall carry a manufacturer'swarranty of at least one year.

Specification ValuePropeller-type fans require only half theoperating hp of blower-type fans. However, they should be readilyadjustable to permit compensation forjobsite conditions that may tend tooverload the motor. The fans of onemanufacturer require the purchase ofspecial positioners for each increment offan blade pitch.

With Series Quiet, the choice is yours. The Geareducer requires no oil changesfor five years, offering you unmatchedreliability and low maintenance.Currently available on 49 Series Quietmodels, the Trane Power Belt drive

system features all-aluminum sheaves, power band belts, and long-life bearingsfor dependable service.

To reduce cost, some manufacturersmay use TEAO motors, whose onlysource of cooling is the flow of airproduced by the cooling tower fan. Theyare sometimes applied at horsepowerssignificantly beyond their nameplaterating.

Unless otherwise specified, motor speedwill be 1800 RPM in 60 Hertz areas and1500 RPM in 50 Hertz areas on standardmodels. Low noise models will usemotor speeds appropriate for thespecific model. If you prefer theoperating flexibility of two-speedoperation, please specify two-speed,single-winding motors which offer fulland half speeds for maximum energysavings. Incidentally, two speed motorsare a far better choice than separate“pony” motors which simply double theproblems indicated above.

The value of a 5 year mechanicalequipment warranty speaks for itself.Except for the motor, virtually all of themechanical equipment on a Trane tower.Cooling tower vendors who purchasecommercial fans, gear reducers, driveshafts, etc. may require that youdeal directly with those commercialsuppliers for warranty satisfaction.

Fill, Louvers andDrift Eliminators

Specifications

7.0 Fill, Louvers and Drift Eliminators:

7.1 Fill shall be film type, thermoformedof 15 mil (0.38 mm) thick PVC, withlouvers formed as part of each fillsheet. Fill shall be suspended fromhot dip galvanized structural tubingsupported from the tower structure, and shall be elevated above the floorof the cold water basin to facilitatecleaning. Air inlet faces of the towershall be free of water splash-out.

7.2 Drift eliminators shall be PVC, triple-pass, and shall limit drift losses to nomore than 0.010% of the design GPMflow rate.

Specification ValueLouvers integral with the fill keep theflowing water within the confines of thefill. The separate external louvers usedby others permit water to escape the filland form ice or produce an unsightlysituation adjacent to the tower. If youplan to use your tower in the wintertime, particularly for free cooling, integrallouvers will put your operating concernsto rest.

Drift rate varieswith designwater loadingand air rate, aswell as drifteliminatordepth andnumber ofdirectionalchanges. Theindicated rate of0.005% is easilyachievablewithout premium cost. If a lower rate isrequired, please discuss with your Traneoffice or representative.

Hot WaterDistribution System

Specifications

8.0 Hot Water Distribution System:

8.1 Two open basins (one above eachbank of fill) shall receive hot waterpiped to each cell of the tower. Thesebasins shall be installed and sealed atthe factory, and shall be equippedwith removable, galvanized steelcovers capable of withstanding theloads described in paragraph 4.1.

8.2 Each basin shall include an inlet holeand bolt circle to accept a 125# flangeconnection per ANSI B16.1.Removable, interchangeablepolypropylene nozzles installed in thefloor of these basins shall provide fullcoverage of the fill by gravity flow.Heavy-duty flow-regulator valvesshall be provided at the hot waterinlet connections. These valves shallbe disc-type, with cast iron bodiesand stainless steel operating stems. There shall be a locking handle tomaintain the valve setting in anyposition. Valves shall be right-angleconfiguration, precluding the needfor inlet elbows.

9.0 Casing, Fan Deck, and Fan Guard:

9.1 The casing and fan deck shall beheavy-gauge galvanized steel, andshall be capable of withstanding theloads described in paragraph 4.1. Thetop of the fan cylinder shall beequipped with a conical, non-sagging, removable fan guard, fabricated of welded 5/16" (8mm) and7 gauge rods, and hot dip galvanizedafter fabrication. Fan cylinders 5'-0" inheight and over shall not be requiredto have a fan guard.

Specification ValueGravity-flow distribution basins are afeature of crossflow type towers, resulting in operating pump heads offrom 10 to 20 feet less than thatencountered in counterflow towers withpressurized spray systems. Also, thesebasins are out where they can be easilyinspected — even maintained — whilethe tower is in operation. Spray systemsof counterflow towers, sandwichedbetween the top of the fill and the drifteliminators, are extremely awkward toaccess and maintain.

Also, the plastic basin covers offered bysome manufacturers are incapable ofsupporting the loads imposed inmaintenance. They will, therefore, tellyou that it is really unnecessary for youto ever go to the top of their towers and— if you do have to — that it is better foryou to work from the top of a portableladder!

Trane flow-controlvalves remainservicable for thelife of the tower, and provide acontinuing meansof flow-regulationbetween hot waterbasins — andbetween cells of multicell towers as well.

Manufacturers who use materials otherthan heavy-gauge steel for fan decksmay be unable to meet your specifiedloading requirements, and maydiscourage you from attempting to usethe top of the tower as a workingplatform. See remarks Handrail andLadder on page 14.

Access

Specifications

10.0 Access:

10.1 A large galvanized steel access door30" (762mm) wide and a minimun of33" (838mm) high shall be located onboth endwalls for entry into the coldwater basin and fan plenum area.Access doors shall be operable frominside as well as outside the tower.

11.0 Cold Water Collection Basin:

11.1 The cold water basin shall be heavy-gauge galvanized steel, and shallinclude the number and type ofsuction connections required toaccommodate the outflow pipingsystem shown on the plans. Suctionconnections shall be equipped withgalvanized debris screens. A factoryinstalled, float operated, mechanicalmake-up valve shall be included. A 4"(102mm) diameter PVC pipeoverflow shall be provided in eachcell of the tower. The basin shallinclude a depressed center sectioninto which accumulated silt can beflushed and overflow standpipesshall be removable to permit flush-out cleaning of the basin. The basinfloor adjacent to the depressedsection shall slope toward thedepressed section to prevent build-up of silt under the fill area. Towers ofmore than one cell shall include steelflumes for flow and equalizationbetween cells.

Specification ValueThe access doors onTQ8301 and TQ8302towers are 30" (762mm)wide by 33" (838mm)high. On TQ8303 thruTQ8312 the accessdoors are 48" (1219mm)high. Access doors onother manufacturer’stowers may be 18"(457 mm) wide orsmaller, which isunreasonably small for ahuman being. Specifying the size of thedoor will cause those bidders to takeexception, alerting you to a potentialmaintenance headache. Two doors arestandard on all Series Quiet towers —one in each endwall.

Trane offers side-suctions, side-outletsumps, and bottom outlets toaccommodate a significant variety ofpiping schemes. Unless so specified, thetower you may be asked to approve mayonly be available with one type ofsuction connection, requiring you toredesign your piping layout.

The removable-standpipe type ofoverflow is valuable because it providesa way to achieve flush-out cleanability.Other drains may be as little as 1"(25mm) diameter, making flush-outcleaning impractical at best.

Stainless Steel Options

Stainless Steel Cold Water Basin:

Para. 11.1: Replace this paragraph withthe following: The cold water basin shallbe heavy-gauge Series 300 stainlesssteel, and shall include the number andtype of suction connections required toaccommodate the outflow pipingsystem shown on the plans. Suctionconnections shall be equipped withstainless steel debris screens. A factory-installed, float-operated, mechanicalmake-up valve shall be included. A 4"(102mm) diameter PVC pipe overflowshall be provided in each cell of thetower. The basin shall include adepressed center section into whichaccumulated silt can be flushed andoverflow standpipes shall be removableto permit flush-out cleaning of the basin. The basin floor adjacent to thedepressed section shall slope toward thedepressed section to prevent build-up ofsilt under the fill area. Towers of morethan one cell shall include stainless steelflumes for flow and equalizationbetween cells. All steel items whichproject into the basin (columns, diagonals, anchor clips, etc.) shall alsobe made of stainless steel.

Stainless Steel Hot WaterBasins:

Para. 8.1: Replace this paragraph withthe following: Two stainless steel openbasins (one above each bank of fill) shallreceive hot water piped to each cell ofthe tower. These basins shall be installedand sealed at the factory, and shall beequipped with removable, stainless steelcovers capable of withstanding the loadsdescribed in paragraph 4.1. Allcomponents of these basins, with theexception of the nozzles, shall bestainless steel.

All Stainless Steel Tower:

Specification ValueThe cold water basin is the only part ofthe tower that is subject to periods ofstagnant water, concentrated withtreatment chemicals and customarycontaminants. It is also the mostexpensive and difficult part of any towerto repair or replace. For these reasons, many customers — particularly thosewho are replacing older towers —choose to specify stainless steel coldwater basins.

Also, see the notes on page 11 regardingthe standard Cold Water CollectionBasin. They apply equally well to thestainless steel basin.

The corrosion potential of contaminatedwater increases with temperature — andthese basins see the hottest water in thetower. If your design hot watertemperature is over 125°F (52°C), or ifyour operating system can produceexcursions beyond that point, you wouldbe well advised to consider this option.

It would also be advisable to change thefill support tubes in Para. 7.1 fromgalvanized structural tubing to 300stainless steel structural tubing. Seenotes regarding Section 8.0 on page 10.

Where water quality falls outside thelimits indicated in Paragraph 5.1, anall-stainless tower is worthy of yourconsideration, and Trane makes anall-stainless version — the SeriesQuiet. Please ask your Trane officeor representative for a copy ofSPEC SS-NC.

Specifications

Convenience and SafetyOptions

Handrail and Ladder:

Para. 10.2: Add the following paragraphin the Access section: The top of thetower shall be equipped with a sturdyhandrail, complete with kneerail andtoeboard, designed according to OSHAguidelines. Handrails and kneerails shallconsist of 1.66" (42mm) O.D. x 15 gaugegalvanized structural tubing, the handrailof which shall be capable ofwithstanding a 200 pound (890N)concentrated live load in any direction.Posts are 2" x 2" (51mm x 51mm) squarestructrual tubing and shall be spaced oncenters of 8'-0" (2438mm) or less. A 1'-6"(457mm) wide aluminum ladder with3" (76mm) I-beam side rails and 1.25"(32mm) diameter rungs shall bepermanently attached to the endwallcasing of the tower, rising from the baseof the tower to the top of the handrail.

Ladder Extension:

Para. 10.2: Add the following to the endof the above paragraph: Provide a ladderextension for connection to the foot ofthe ladder attached to the tower casing. This extension shall be long enough torise from the roof (grade) level to thebase of the tower. The installingcontractor shall be responsible forcutting the ladder to length; attaching itto the foot of the tower ladder; andanchoring it at its base.

Ladder Safety Cage:

Para. 10.3: Add the following paragraphin the Access section: A heavy gaugegalvanized steel safety cage shallsurround the ladder, extending from apoint approximately 7'-0" (2.134m)above the foot of the ladder to the top ofthe handrail surrounding the fan deck.

Specification ValueGood maintenance practice requiresperiodic access to the top of the tower toinspect the distribution basins as well asthe structural integrity of the fan deck, fan guard, fan cylinder and fan —especially the fan blade securinghardware. There are no induced-draftsteel cooling tower designs that areimmune to thisneed! See NOTE onpage 14.

For the comfort andsafety of youroperating personnel,we recommend thatyou specify a ladderand handrail — andthat you require it of all bidders! Portableladders and other “make-do” accessmeans are inappropriate for equipmentof this size and complexity. Also, fixedladders without fan deck handrails inviteunsafe maintenance practices and mustnot be allowed.

Many towers are installed such that thebase of the tower is 2'-0" (610 mm) ormore above the roof or grade level. Thismakes it difficult to get up to the foot ofthe attached ladder. The ladderextension alleviates this problem.Trane's ladder extensions are available instandard 5'-0" (1.524m) and 11'-0"(3.353m) lengths.

To meet OSHA guidelines, towers whosefan decks are 20'-0" (6.096m) or moreabove roof or grade, and which areequipped with ladders, should havesafety cages surrounding the ladders, but with approximately 7'-0" (2.134m)clear headroom.

Thiswalkway shall be supported by agalvanized steel framework, and the topof the grating shall be at or above thecold water basin overflow level.

Interior Mechanical EquipmentAccess Platform: TQ8303 thru TQ8309

Para. 10.5: Add the following to thePlenum Walkway paragraph: A factory-installed, elevated galvanized bar gratingplatform convenient to the care andmaintenance of the tower's mechanicalequipment shall be provided.

Specification ValueWhere towers are installed on anelevated grillage or piers, it is oftendifficult to get to — and through — theaccess door conveniently. This platformprovides easy, safe, and comfortableaccess to that door. It also extendsbeyond the door to provide readyaccess to the optional Control System.See drawing on page 13 and photo onpage 16.

This is not an option that is normallyrequired during a Trane tower’s servicelife. It is, however, convenient for thoseunusual situations where a fan,Geareducer, or motor may needreplacement and the tower is locatedwhere access by a rigging device isdifficult or impossible. It may be installedwhen needed, or left permanentlyattached. Ask for a copy of Tranedrawing 94-4689.

Note: OSHA and other concernedauthorities are in the process ofdeveloping guidelines regarding thesafety procedures and protectiveequipment that should be providedmaintenance personnel who arerequired to go inside cooling towers.Trane feels it advisable to provide for asmuch maintenance as possible fromoutside the cooling tower and, to thatend, offers such options as Handrail andLadder — pg 14, Ladder Extension — pg14, Ladder Safety Cage — pg 14, AccessDoor Platform — pg 15, MechanicalEquipment Removal System — pg 15,and Motor out of the Airstream — pg 19.Such interior convenience options asPlenum Walkway — pg 15, that areoffered are not meant as an invitation toperform inside maintenance. They areintended solely to maximize the comfortand safety of maintenance personnelduring the performance of whateverinside work may become necessary.

Ifa solid state temperature controller isused the controller will be door mountedon the control panel. The temperaturecontroller will display two temperatures, one for outgoing water and the other forset point. Water temperature input shallbe obtained using a three-wire RTD withdry well in the outlet water piping andwired back to the solid state temperaturecontroller in the control panel.

Specifiation ValueIf it is your opinion that the controlsystem for the cooling tower should bepart of the tower manufacturer’sresponsibility, we are in wholeheartedagreement with you. Who better todetermine the most efficient mode andmanner of a tower’s operation — and toapply a system most compatible with it— than the designer and manufacturerof the cooling tower?

Trane variable speed drives are alsoavailable for the ultimate in temperaturecontrol, energy management, andmechanical equipment longevity. Seespecifications on page 18.

The purpose of this switchwill be to interrupt power to the motor inthe event of excessive vibration. It shallbe adjustable for sensitivity, and shallrequire manual reset.

Basin Heaters:

Para. 11.2: Add the following paragraphin the Cold Water Basin section: Providea system of electric immersion heatersand controls for each cell of the tower toprevent freezing of water in thecollection basin during periods ofshutdown. The system shall consist ofone or more stainless steel electricimmersion heaters installed in threadedcouplings provided in the side of thebasin. A NEMA 4 enclosure shall house amagnetic contactor to energize heaters;a transformer to provide 24 volt controlcircuit power; and a solid state circuitboard for temperature and low watercut-off. A control probe shall be locatedin the basin to monitor water level andtemperature. The system shall becapable of maintaining 40°F (4.4°C)water temperature at an ambient airtemperature of _____ °F ( ____ °C).

Specification ValueUnless specifiedotherwise, a Metrixswitch will beprovided. A double-pole, double-throwmodel is alsoavailable. Ifpurchased inconjunction with theControl System, it isalso factory-wired.The requirement for manual resetassures that the tower will be visited todetermine the cause of excess vibration.

The basin heater components describedat left represent Trane'srecommendation for a reliable automaticsystem for the prevention of basinfreezing. They are normally shippedseparately for installation at the jobsiteby the installing contractor. Whenpurchased in conjunction with theenhanced Control System option, however, they are customarily factory-mounted and tested.

Submerged in basin water, in which zincions are present, copper immersionheaters must not be used. Insist uponstainless steel.

The ambient air temperature that youinsert in the specifications should be thelowest 1% level of winter temperatureprevalent at site.

Variable SpeedDrive

Specifications

Variable Speed Drive:

Para. 6.4: Add the following paragraphin the Mechanical Equipment section:Each cell of the cooling tower shall beequipped with a UL listed control systemin a NEMA 3R or 4X outdoor enclosurecapable of controlling single-speed ortwo-speed motors as required, anddesigned specifically for cooling towerapplications. The panel shall include amain fused disconnect with an externaloperating handle, lockable in the offposition for safety. Across-the-linemagnetic starters or solid state soft-startstarters as required shall be controlledwith a thermostatic or solid statetemperature controller. Door mountedselector switches shall be provided toenable automatic or manual control andwired for 120VAC control. Control circuitto be wired out to terminal blocks forfield connection to a remote vibrationswitch and for access to extra 120VAC50VA control power, overload trip alarmsand remote temperature control devices. The temperature controller shall beadjustable for the required cold watertemperature. If a thermostatic controlleris used it shall be mounted on the side ofthe tower with the temperature sensingbulb installed in the cold water basinusing a suspension mounting bracket.

Specification ValueIf it is your opinion that the controlsystem for the cooling tower should bepart of the tower manufacturer’sresponsibility, we are in wholeheartedagreement with you. Who better todetermine the most efficient mode andmanner of a tower’s operation — and toapply a system most compatible with it— than the designer and manufacturerof the cooling tower?

Motor Out ofthe Airstream

Miscellaneous Options

Motor out of the Airstream:

Para. 6.1: Add the following to the endof this paragraph: The motor shall bemounted outside the casing of the tower, and shall be connected to the gearreducer by a dynamically-balanced,stainless steel tube and flange driveshaft.

Fan Cylinder Extensions:

Para. 9.1: Insert the following after thefirst sentence: Fan cylinder extensionsshall be provided to elevate the fandischarge to a height of ___ ft ( ___ m)above the fan deck level.

Equalizer Flume Weir Gates:

Para. 11.2: Add the following paragraphunder Cold Water Collection Basin: Theinterconnecting flume between cellsshall be equipped with a removablecover plate to permit the shutdown ofone cell for maintenance purposes, or topermit independent cell operation.

Specification ValueTrane cooling tower electric motors werelocated outside the fan cylinders, thatexists inside the tower plenum.

Although improved motor designs(insulation, bearings, seals, andlubricants) have now made it feasible forus to locate the motor inside the tower inclose-coupled proximity to theGeareducer (page 8), many users stillprefer the motor to be located outsidethe humid airstream. If you are amongthose users — or are among those whosee the wisdom of their thinking —please specify this option. If you do,however, please require it of all bidders.See graphic on page 13.

Extensions are available in 1'- 0"(305mm) increments to a maximumheight equal to the diameter of the fan.Such extensions may be considered

necessary in order to elevate thedischarge beyond the bounds of anenclosure. Discuss applicability withyour local Trane office or representative.

Where it is your intention to be able tooperate both cells of the tower while theflume cover plate is installed, separateoutlet connections, float valves, andoverflows must be provided for eachcell. Likewise, this would requireseparate sensors and controls for basinheater systems, if installed.

Sound Control

Specifications

Miscellaneous Options

Sound Control:

Para. 1.2: Add the following paragraphunder Base: The cooling tower shall bequiet operating, and shall produce anoverall level of sound no higher than____ dBA, measured at the criticallocation indicated on the plans.

Specification ValueSound produced by a standard SeriesQuiet tower operating in anunobstructed environment will meet allbut the most restrictive noise limitations— and will react favorably to naturalattenuation. Over 100 Series Quietmodels are designated as low noiseselections and should fit situationswhere sound is a concern. Where thetower has been sized to operate withinan enclosure, the enclosure itself willhave a damping effect on sound. Soundalso declines with distance — by about 5or 6 dBA each time the distance doubles.Where noise at a critical point is likely toexceed an acceptable limit, you haveseveral options — listed below inascending order of cost impact:• Where only a slight reduction in noise

will satisfy — and the source ofconcern is in a particular direction —merely turning the tower may be theanswer. Less sound emanates from thecased face of the tower than does fromthe air intake face.

• In many cases, noise concerns arelimited to nighttime, when ambientnoise levels are lower and neighborsare trying to sleep. You can usuallyresolve these situations by using two-speed motors in either 1800/900 or1800/1200 RPM configuration; andoperating the fans at reduced speedwithout cycling “after hours”. (Thenatural nighttime reduction in wet-bulbtemperature makes this a very feasiblesolution in most areas of the world, butthe need to avoid cycling may causethe cold water temperature to varysignificantly.)

• Variable speed drives automaticallyminimize the tower's noise level duringperiods of reduced load and/orreduced ambient without sacrificingthe system's ability to maintain aconstant cold water temperature. Thisis a relatively inexpensive solution, andcan pay for itself quickly in reducedenergy costs.

• Where noise is a concern at all times(for example, near a hospital), the bestsolution is to oversize the tower so itcan operate continuously at reduced(1200 or 900 RPM) motor speed evenat the highest design wet-bulbtemperature. Typical sound reductionsare 7 dBA at 2/3 fan speed or 10 dBA at½ fan speed, but larger reductions areoften possible.

• Extreme cases may require specialfans or inlet and discharge soundattenuator sections; however, the staticpressure loss imposed by attenuatorsmay necessitate an increase in towersize. This is the least desirableapproach because of the significantcost impact — and because of theobstruction to normal maintenanceprocedures.

With 184 models to choose from, 103models designed specifically for lownoise applications, your Trane salesrepresentative will be able to help youmeet your sound requirements.

Single Hot Water InletConnection

Miscellaneous Options

Single Hot Water Inlet Connection perCell:

Para. 8.2: Replace this paragraph withthe following: Each cell of the tower shallinclude a single hot water inletconnection located as shown on theplans. An internal system of piping shalldeliver water equally to the distributionbasins without the need for balancingvalves. This internal piping system shallrequire no scheduled maintenance, andshall be located such that it does notinterfere with normal maintenanceaccess. Removable, interchangeablepolypropylene nozzles installed in thefloor of these basins shall provide fullcoverage of the fill by gravity flow.

Specification ValueThis option reduces what mightotherwise be a complex hot water pipinglayout to a simple, single connection percell. It also avoids an unsightly (perhapsunsafe) maze of pipe exposed above thetop deck of the tower.

The single inlet connection can belocated either in the tower's endwallcasing, or below the cold water basin. The endwall entry point is suitable forsingle-cell towers, and for those thatmight be installed in groups of two cellseach. Bottom inlet piping lends itself toclose-spaced, multicell installations, andto those situations where it isappropriate to keep all pipework belowthe level of the tower.
