SERMONS BY A. B. SIMPSON AS FOUND IN THE PERIODICALS

INTRODUCTION

Simpson published his first periodical, THE GOSPEL IN ALL LANDS,

1880 - 1881, when pastor of the 13th Street Presbyterian Church

of New York City. Editorials and articles from his pen appear

regularly in this missionary publication but not sermons.

When he resigned his Presbyterian pastorate to begin an inde-

pendent evangelistic ministry in the city, he began a second

periodical, THE WORD, THE WORK AND THE WORLD. It has con tin-ued until today in the current ALLIANCE WITNESS. The first

issue was February 1882. It was a monthly publication as was

its predecessor. Only a few sermons were publi shed in it when

a monthly, 1882 - 1889. But he did publish sermons in book-

lets entitled Tabernacle Sermons. * In mid - 1889 the periodi-

cal became a weekly and a Sunday sermon or convention sermon was

printed nearly every week.

Later, 1902 - 1907, Simpson added another periodical, LIVING

TRUTHS: He never identified himself in this periodical, but

there are long articles in it by the Editor. They are listed

in Articles by A. B. Simpson.

All of these periodicals have been carefully examined, the

sermons listed by year, month and page. Volume numbers were

* The booklets became books, - eleven of them. The contentsof these eleven books you will find in The Writings ofA. B. Simpson, Part II Alphabetical.

irregular for bibliographical purposes. All of the sermons

have been at least scanned and notes added to the title in

this list when deemed useful.

Several delightful tasks remain for those interested in the

preachkg and views of Dr. Simpson, not the least of which is

the analysis and publication of the many sermons that never

fel t printer i s ink except in the periodicals.

Notel

As seen in the preceding pages, Dr. Simpson only published a fewof his sermons in his periodical..(a monthly publication then and through June 1889).

In 1886 he began to publish separately what he entitled,TABERNACLE SEro~ONS. He printed a Sunday sermon in small book-let form, about 7x5 inches in size, bound them together eachmonth and sent them to subscribers. When he completed a par-ticular series of sermons, he bound the monthly publicationsinto a single volume. Thus from 1886 through mid 1889 Simpsonpublished eleven books in the general category of TABEfflACLESERMONS. They are listed below by Roman numerals I, II, etc. *

When the periodical became a "weekly" in August 1889,ended the separate weekly and monthly publications ofand published one each week in the magazines. These, collected by subj ect or theme and published in books.Simpson published some 67 books of sermons.
