Prior to his work at Ohio Valley University, Harold Shank pursued
a career in Christian education and ministry. Harold is a graduate of
Oklahoma Christian University with a B.A. in Bible. He received
his M.A. and M.A.R. from Harding School of Theology and his
Ph.D. in Theology from Marquette University. He served as a pro-
fessor of Old Testament at Oklahoma Christian University for five
years and was an adjunct at Harding School of Theology for 16
years. He was associated with the Highland Church of Christ in
Memphis for 32 years, including 20 years as the preacher. During
that time, the Highland church sponsored the Shanks in planting the
Northtown congregation in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Harold’s interest in the welfare of children and young people led
him to serve as the national spokesperson for Christian Child and
Family Services (1996 to present), an organization which represents
approximately 70 childcare agencies across the nation. He also
champions ministries to the poor and vulnerable, writing and speak-
ing about these topics frequently.
His most recent book is Listening to His Heartbeat–What the Bible
says about the Heart of God (2009). He also wrote It’s All About
God(2004), Children Mean the World to God (2001), College Press
NIV Commentary of the Minor Prophets (2001), Up Close and Per-
sonal – Embracing the Poor (2000), and Loosening Your
Grip (1995). Shank is also the author of over 100 journal, magazine
and encyclopedia articles and pre-
viously served as a reviews editor
for The Christian Chronicle. He
blogs regularly on his web
site:www.haroldshank.com.
Harold and Sally have been mar-
ried for 37 years and have two
sons, Daniel and Nathan. Prior to
their move to Vienna, they at-
tended Memorial Road Church of
Christ in Edmond, Oklahoma,

Do Not Fret By Andy Robison
Via Publishing Peace, A monthly journal published
by the West Virginia School of Preaching.
“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomor-row will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble” (Matt 6.34). “Be anxious for nothing…” (Phil 4.6). A word from one who has trouble practicing these scriptures: Be thankful they are there. Awareness of evil in the world generally increases with age. Some precious children are exposed to humanity’s injustices earlier than are some pam-pered adults. Still, the more one knows about the world, the more one knows people mistreat people, the relatively innocent suffer at the hands of the op-pressors (cf. Eccl 4.1), and the privileged and pow-erful exalt themselves at the expense of the lowly (cf. Matt 23.14; 2 Tim 3.6; James 5.5-6). This wicked phenomenon even happens within the Lords church (3 John 9-10). It is enough to depress one’s spirit beyond recovery, were it not for the word of God. The multiple exhortations of Divinely offered com-fort include: “Do not fret because of evildoers, Not be envious of the workers of iniquity (Psa 37.1).
“And why not?” the persecuted might object. “The evil seem to be getting their way!” Their riches in-crease! People believe their slanderous lies!” (cf. Job 21.7-16; 12.6; Jer 12.1; Psa 109.1-5) Why not fret? Because the God who had the power to create and uphold the world with His word (Psalm 33.6; Heb 1.3) is the one who has power to deal - and here’s the key - in His own good time with the wicked. For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and with as the green herb (Psa 37.2). Rejoice, O soul, for the judgment of the Lord is nearer than one might think (James 1.9-11; 5.1-8). That powerful and living (Heb 4.12), creative and judging (Heb 11.3; John 12.48) Word of God is also renewing (1 Pet 1.22-25) and sustaining (Psalm 119.49-50) to the downcast human spirit. Here is a reminder from an inspired man who knew suffering, and eventual exoneration. Trust in the Lord, and do good; Dwell in the land, and feed on his faithfulness. Delight yourself also in the Lord, And he shall give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him, And He shall bring it to pass. He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light. And your justice as the noonday (Psalm 37.3-6). Continued on back……….
