Servant Leadership Award Application Name of nominee: Darrell Casey Title: Lean Solutions and The Center for Lean Leadership in Healthcare Organization: The Christ Hospital Health Council involvement: Greater Cincinnati Lean Improvement Consortium Service: 2.5 yr Darrell Casey independently assisted the Workforce Center in the initial formation stage of the Greater Cincinnati Lean Improvement Consortium. This regional program brings lean principles and training to any Health Council member who joined the initiative in 2013. There are eleven Lean teams who not only receive lean education and personal mentoring but are instituting cost saving and continuous improvement projects in each of their facilities. Without Darrell’s lean expertise, this regional program would never have launched! INTEGRITY Darrell is committed to always “doing what is right”. There have been many discussions regarding what is fair, what is the r ight thing to do for the community and for individuals….Darrell is always honest, compassionate and committed to integrity for the Council’s reputation and for all those involved. He does not judge which makes him a truly unique individual and a breath of fresh air to the healthcare community. The ability to deliver value comes from having sound concepts of what the customers wants and values. This is based in the ultimate source of value, the people of the organization; their mind is the most advanced, active, adaptive technology ever created. Casey (Darrell has the above quote after his email signature) “The most poignant example of customer service to me was when he was a pt (at The Christ Hospital) getting his blood drawn and a young woman was trying to get into the high-risk OB-GYN office. He helped get someone in the office to open the door and sat with her until he was able to advocate in letting her back in a treatment room, all while she was actively having a miscarriage. He was her listening ear ….to her concerns and took action, seeing her through to the end (instead of just letting her wander around and go through the system).Candy Fox, Christ Hospital Employee INNOVATION Throughout the years Darrel has been a driving force; one to be reckoned with! He makes you think, ponder and create new and inspiration ways to motivate people. He sends encouraging messages to challenge ourselves and make an important difference. Darrell is a wonderful human being making a difference every day. Paula Schneider, Manager Admitting, Registration, Booking, The Christ Hospital COLLABORATION When Darrell was approached for the regional lean initiative, he immediately volunteered his time to build a collaborative program in our region. Before work, during and after hours were dedicated to the Health Council to make this program a success. Darrell also mentors two participating healthcare groups to ensure their understanding of lean practices and to support successful projects. Mary Duffey, Health Council Darrell proactively ferreted out a unique, broad spectrum of organization members that were deemed to be passionate, purpose driven, but who also were eager for positive change. He brought together senior executives with maintenance staff, food and beverage staff, clinical teams, physicians and so on, to work collaboratively to inspire and enact organizational change. This group now serves to pull together broader teams all with a shared purpose. In the day of matrix structured organizations and silo approaches, Darrell has created a movement of collaboration. He assisted with the program training, helped secure several advisory council members, developed marketing plans, mentored participant groups and later found program trainers. Darrell Casey is a true leader but more important he exemplifies what servant leadership is: Servant leadership is both a leadership philosophy and set of leadership practices. Traditional leadership generally involves the accumulation and exercise of power by one at the “top of the pyramid.” By comparison, the servant-leader shares power, puts the needs of others first and helps people develop and perform as highly as possible. DARRELL CASEY BIO As an internationally recognized leader and expert in lean systems implementation, strategic breakthroughs creating sustainable competitive advantage, and organizational effectiveness, Dr. Darrell Casey understands what it takes to thrive in today’s competitive global economy as an innovator of distinctive competencies within resources. Casey has more than 20 years of experience spanning all facets of operations management, lean and change leadership. Casey regularly speaks to executive leadership teams on the topics of Lean Enterprise, Strategy Development and Deployment, Organizational Effectiveness and Change. Dr. Casey holds his Ph.D. Business Administration Strategic Leadership from Kennedy Western University and M.S. and B.A. in Technology from Eastern Illinois University. He has been a faculty member at the Community College of the Air Force, Hutchinson Community College, and Ivy Tech State College. Casey is a Certified Strategic Management Analyst (CSMA) and Fellow of the Graduate Academy of Management. Casey has published "The Role of Change Leadership in a Operations Excellence Model" 2009, "Strategic Lean Transformation: Turning Traditional Lean Paradigms Into Distinctive Competencies" 2010, while "X Matrix: Strategy Deployment and Execution Process For Breakthrough Business Performance" was released in the winter of 2012. Casey has business experience in; Denmark, Scotland, Ireland, Poland, Czech Republic, Germany, Belgium, France, Spain, Italy, Mexico, Brazil, and Canada.
