BY THE WAY . . .

During this time of sheltering in place, Saint Anthony’s offers Holy Mass, livestreamed, every morning from the church at 10:30 A.M. I am grateful for the many people who join us each morning, and for the many positive comments we have received from our parishioners, and those around the country and abroad who choose to join us each morning, as well as those who pray with us later in the day through various media platforms. On Tuesday mornings at the conclusion of Mass, we offer the prayers of the Saint Anthony Novena. Our parish has been praying this Novena on the nine Tuesdays before the June 13 Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua for many years now, and we are happy to continue that custom through our livestream capacity. The Novena prayers may be accessed through our parish web site.

In anticipation of the arrival of our new bishop, Bishop Kevin Sweeney, Father Ray has been offering a series on Wednesday evenings on the Bishops of Paterson. This week we will look at the life and times of the seventh Bishop of Paterson, Most Rev. Arthur J. Serratelli (2004-2020). Join us livestreamed from the church at 7:30 P.M. on Wednesday evening. One of the long-time and mostly unsung employees of the Paterson Diocese is Carlos Roldan. For nearly three decades Carlos has worked tirelessly maintaining the Diocesan Food Bank at the Father English Center on Main Street in Paterson. As you may remember each year on Corpus Christi Sunday we, along with the other parishes of the diocese have conducted a special food drive (our assignment for several years has been coffee, hot cereal and tooth paste) to help stock up the pantry for the heavy months of the summer when the drain on the food bank is highest. Right now, Carlos is already in crisis! As you might imagine the Corona19 pandemic has put an unbelievable strain on food banks. Just this morning reading from Paul’s Letter to the Galatians, I read the words, “The only thing they insisted on was that we should remember to help the poor” (Galatians 2:10). I am happy to state that, despite everything going on around us, our parish has not forgotten to do that. Just the other day Carlos Roldan was in our parking lot to pick up food donations from our parish to help stock his depleted shelves (see photo below). Through the good work of Deacon Jerry and the Social Services Ministry, and the generosity of our parishioners, we are able to give Carlos a boost, as he and we “remember to help the poor.”

Next Sunday is Corpus Christi Sunday, the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ. If you can, drop off a food donation on the table behind the rectory. If not, the drive has gone virtual, and you can shop online and have items directly shipped to Catholic Charities Food Pantries. Visit www.ccpaterson.org/corpus for more information and visit www.yougivegoods.com/ccpaterson-fooddrive2020 to find our parish, and shop for our pantries in need. You may also email: [email protected] or call (973) 737-2077 ext.403 with any questions or to donate food directly to Catholic Charities Food Pantries.

Last Thursday, May 28 was the last day of school for Saint Anthony’s eighth graders (yes, school is still going on). Many schools have struggled with how to acknowledge their graduates during a time of pandemic. Saint Anthony’s is no different. On Friday afternoon the school faculty organized a car procession to visit the homes of each of the twenty 8th graders at Saint Anthony’s School to present them with a lawn sign and a small gift to mark their graduation. It only took the faculty four hours to accomplish this task! Saint Anthony’s School – making a difference one student at a time. Mass Intentions – Someone wrote in this week to ask why the Mass intention they had requested was not mentioned on the day they had requested. I had covered this in an article earlier in the pandemic, but it may be helpful to cover it again. Every day since March 17, there have been two Masses offered at Saint Anthony’s. One of the two is live streamed. Each of these Masses is offered for intentions requested earlier in the year, however the intentions may not necessarily be offered on the specific day you requested, nor necessarily at the Mass that is live streamed. The pandemic Mass schedule and the pre-pandemic Mass Intention book do not coincide. For example, on Sunday May 24 there were intentions for five different Masses according to our regular Sunday schedule; but, in fact, we only offered two Masses that day. Conversely, on Monday, June 1, we had intentions for our one usually scheduled Monday Mass, but in fact we actually offered two Masses that day. So, Father Sylwester and I have been offering the Masses for the intentions in the order in which they appear in the Mass Intention Book, irregardless of the date. This has worked fairly well and we are almost caught up with all the intentions. I want to assure you that all the Mass intentions you have requested for this Spring are, in fact, being offered . . . just not when you think. It is the best we could do in a time of confusion. If you are a fan of early comedic television, you may know that one of the facets of those early TV sit-coms was “the fraternal organization.” Fictional groups like the Loyal Order of the Raccoon (The Honeymooners), the Mystic Knights of the Sea (Amos and Andy), and the Tuesday Afternoon Ladies Fine Arts League (I Love Lucy) elicited howls of laughter because at that point in the early 1950s, almost everyone still belonged to a similar group. In the “Golden Age of Fraternalism” (1880s-1930s) there were literally thousands of fraternal groups in the United States organized around common bonds of age, gender, religion, ethnicity, history, occupation, music, hobbies, philanthropy, etc. Many people belonged to several. There were hundreds of these fraternal and benevolent societies just under Catholic auspices alone. Almost all these groups have disappeared from the scene, but there is one notable exception - the Knights of Columbus. Founded in 1882 as a Catholic fraternal and benefit society, the KofC has been blessed with such remarkable national leadership that It has practically re-invented itself several times in order to remain strong and current through nearly 140 years.

Page 5: Served by · 7/6/2020  · BY THE WAY . . . During this time of sheltering in place, Saint Anthony’s offers Holy Mass, livestreamed, every morning from the church at 10:30 A.M

The Knights were founded by a Connecticut priest, Father Michael McGivney (1852-1890), and for many years the Knights have promoted the cause for canonization of their founder. Last week, on the recommendation of the Vatican Congregation for the Causes of the Saints, Pope Francis accepted a miracle attributed to the intercession of Father McGivney, paving the way for his beatification, probably in the Fall. Blessed Michael McGivney will become the 19th American to be canonized or beatified. Congratulations to the Knights of Columbus. Our live streaming of daily Mass has been rather successful, and I have received many notes and comments expressing people’s gratitude for their ability to attend Sunday Mass. My guess is that this will be a feature of Saint Anthony’s parish life for a long time to come. We have been blessed to have two “techie nuns,” Sisters Colleen and Elfie, who have coordinated that effort for the past 90 days. However, that cannot go on forever. If you are able to volunteer to help man (or woman) the cameras, please let me know. One of the classics of Catholic prayer is the Anima Christi. Falsely attributed to Saint Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits, the prayer has continuously appeared in various forms in Catholic prayer books and hymnals from the 14th century down to the present day. It’s very earthy images may not always appeal to modern Catholic sensibilities, but its combination of earthiness, the passion of Christ, and the Eucharist contains a whole theology of Baptism, Eucharist and the Church. In thirteen brief lines, there is a thousand years of meditation on the saving mysteries of Christ at Calvary. As we all find ourselves longing to be able to receive Holy Communion again, it is a good prayer to reflect on for next Sunday’s Feast of Corpus Christi, the Body and Blood of Christ. Soul of Christ, sanctify me. Body of Christ, save me. Blood of Christ, inebriate me. Water from the side of Christ, wash me. Passion of Christ, strengthen me. O good Jesus, hear me. Within your wounds hide me. Do not let me be separated from you. From the malicious enemy defend me. In the hour of my death call me and bid me come to you, that with your saints I may praise you, for ever and ever. Amen. Stay safe. God bless you all, Father Ray

FEAST CORNER

IMPORTANT UPDATE!!!

Our 40th Anniversary Feast had been scheduled for June 10-13th, but due to circumstances beyond our control, we will not be able to hold our Feast in the manner we are used to. However, we hope to do something in the summer or early fall to keep the tradition going-even if it is just sharing a zeppoli! We just do not know the specifics at this time due to the current pandemic along with vendor restrictions and various other concerns. We will keep everyone informed as soon as possible.

We thank you for your patience and support during this time.
