Supported – These Operating System versions will be supported for production use of the

application.

For the most up to date list of certified and supported Operating Systems for this version of the

application please refer to the Release Notes.

2.2 Configuring Disk Space

Minimum disk space, memory, and CPU requirements are for a basic installation of the

application. Prior to a production deployment, an architect should review the technical

requirements and confirm sizing for the servers to be used for the implementation of the

application.

2.2.1 Normal Disk Space Configuration

Minimum disk space (500 GB) can be allocated as follows:

– 50 GB – OS (not including swap space)

– 50 GB – VDC application with a default location of /opt/VDC

– 200 GB – VDC database with a default location of /usr/local/pgsql

– 200 GB – Backup with a default location of /opt/VDC.BACKUP. The allocation

of external file system space for backups is recommended in all instances.

Note: The minimum requirements do not apply to all instances. As the

number of monitored devices and monitored points increases, the minimum

requirements have to be adjusted. Consult with an engineer before

provisioning the server.

2.2.2 Alternate Storage Configuration

If you have very limited disk space on the default installation directories (/opt, /usr), alternate

storage can be installed to a different directory.

To set up this capability, execute the following command to specify the alternate storage areas

for the application and database:

./install -v vdc_storage_home -d db_storage_home

o 50 GB – VDC application with a default location of vdc_storage_home

o 200 GB – VDC database with a default location of db_storage_home

o For example, if you have very limited disk space under /usr/local, /opt, or both

but you have lots of space under /BIGSTORAGE/DB and /BIGSTORAGE/VDC, you

could specify the following:

./install -v /BIGSTORAGE/VDC -d /BIGSTORAGE/DB

Note: The installer will still create /opt/VDC and /usr/local/pgsql for storing key content. Please

allocate 1 GB to each one of these directories.

Installing the Application Server 8 Server & OS Installation Guide

The server needs a static IP or static Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) IP so

that its IP address does not change.

Note: Static DHCP enables the DHCP server on your router to assign the same IP address

to a specific LAN computer automatically. This feature is required if you want an

interface to have the same IP address.

Note: Edit the /etc/hosts file prior to starting the install script to include the hostname

and IP address of the host or the script will fail

Your system must support the Software Development kit. You can select this option

when you install the Red Hat Enterprise Linux server and CentOS instance

Security Enhanced Linux (SELinux) should be disabled.

The installation package will create two users (vdc and postgres) and one group (vdc) as

part of the installation. These groups and users are required for the software to function

properly.

Ensure that your system allows suid for all of the VDC disk partitions.

Installation Prerequisites 10 Server & OS Installation Guide

3 Installation Prerequisites

3.1 The installation has the following prerequisites:

The following information is required:

o Host IP Address

Note: Edit the /etc/hosts file prior to starting the install script to include the

hostname and IP address of the host or the script will fail.

o Root Password (Installation must be run as the root user on the server.)

o Hostname

o URL

Note: FQDN is not mandatory. It can be a resolvable hostname.

VPM servers must allow trusted relationships using the authorized_keys2 file between

the root, vdc, and postgres user accounts on each server and between the master and

remote probe servers.

The /tmp directory needs to have execution rights for certain scripts in the installer and

post install to be able to run properly

3.2 The sshd configuration must be edited to allow root login:

1. Change to root user (su root). 2. Edit the sshd configuration file /etc/ssh/sshd_config.

Find the line containing the string "PermitRootLogin No" and set it to "PermitRootLogin Yes". Ensure there ites no # at the start of this line.

3. Restart the sshd daemon (service sshd restart). Note: During installation, it is necessary for the installation script to create various configuration tasks, which require system administrator privileges. These tasks include: install pre-prerequisite RPM packages, build and install prerequisite 3rd party library packages, create postgres and vdc users, create postgres and vdc application file systems, create system scripts to auto startup and shutdown the application and create crontab jobs to schedule key tasks.

Installation Prerequisites 11 Server & OS Installation Guide

3.3 Server Ports

The following TCP/UDP ports must be open for VPM.

Note: For polling ports some customers may configure custom ports for interfacing with devices

on these protocols and these custom ports would need to be open as well. The ports listed

below are the default ports for the respective protocol listed.

# Port Type Port Port Usage

1 TCP 22 SSH 2 TCP 80 or 443 Web (HTTP or HTTPS)

3 TCP 1200 RMI Communication

4 TCP 5432 Postgres Database 5 UDP 161 SNMP Polling

6 UDP 162 SNMP Trap Listener

7 TCP 502 Modbus Polling

8 TCP 47808 Bacnet Polling

9 TCP 6580 RFCode Polling

3.4 Application Server RMP Packages

The server RPM packages are installed on the server during the OS installation. If the server is

being installed to an existing Linux operating system, some file directory references may differ

from those documented in this guide.

Note: When installing RedHat/CentOS 7.x, it is required that the "Server with GUI" option is

selected when the OS installer prompts for package selection.

Page 12: Server & OS Installation Guide Version 1.2 - Extranet Loginlit.powerware.com/ll_download.asp?file=Eaton-VPM-v1.2... · 8.1 Installing Red Hat Enterprise Linux OS ... Installing the

Locate, Place, Extract and Run the Installation File 12 Server & OS Installation Guide

4 Locate, Place, Extract and Run the Installation File

Read through all of this section before launching the installer. There are several special

situations that require additional parameters to the install command.

Note: The folder reference in this set of instructions may not be the same folder used on your

server. Please substitute your actual folder reference in place of /opt/Install if needed.

1. Create the /opt/Install directory. If this directory already exists, then continue to step 2. mkdir /opt/Install

2. The installation file should be placed within the /opt/Install directory. If the installation package is not within that directory, you need to move the package to the /opt/Install directory. Once the package is in the /opt/Install directory, you need to change to the /opt/Install directory. cd /opt/Install

3. Extract the install package. tar –xvf /opt/Install/‘Application filename goes here’ Note: You do not have to decompress it as the tar command automatically decompresses it. We recommend you take a VM snapshot at this point.

4. Capture the entire installation process in a log file by executing this script: script /opt/Install/install.log Important! Always execute this step. If the installation runs into any problems, you can send this file (install.log) to Customer Support. We recommend you take a VM snapshot at this point.

5. Start the installation by executing these commands: cd /opt/Install/"VDC"InstallerVersion-Installer/ Note: Before you run the installer script, read through the next few sections to clearly identify the scenario that fits your installation. The installer requires a series of responses from you. Note: Edit the /etc/hosts file prior to starting the install script to include the hostname and IP address of the host or the script will fail. ./install

4.1 Special Instructions for 7.3 Red Hat / CentOS Systems

The VPM installer uses external RedHat / CentOS 7.3 YUM repositories for installing VPM.

These repositories can be from one of 3 sources. Depending on the source, the install command

may require additional parameters.

Page 13: Server & OS Installation Guide Version 1.2 - Extranet Loginlit.powerware.com/ll_download.asp?file=Eaton-VPM-v1.2... · 8.1 Installing Red Hat Enterprise Linux OS ... Installing the

Locate, Place, Extract and Run the Installation File 13 Server & OS Installation Guide

1. The default RedHat / CentOS YUM repository, which a customer has already subscribed to. To check if this repository is available, run "yum grouplist" to see if YUM group lists can be retrieved successfully. To use this repository, no additional parameter is required when invoking the VPM installation script. Example: ./install

2. The DVD disc which was used to set up the current VPM Server OS. To use this repository, a "-c" parameter is required when invoking the VPM installation script. Example: ./install -c

3. The DVD ISO image file which was used to set up the current VPM Server OS. To use this repository, a "-o ISO_FILE_NAME" parameter is required when invoking the VPM installation script. Example: ./install -o CentOS-7-x86_64-DVD-1611.iso

Note: When installing RedHat/CentOS, it is required that the "Server with GUI" option is

selected when the OS installer prompts for package selection.

4.2 Installation Time

The install command runs through a series of prompts and then runs several configuration scripts. The initial

interactive portion is not lengthy but the following automated scripts and configuration can take 45 minutes or

more depending on the CPU, memory and disk speed of the server.

Page 14: Server & OS Installation Guide Version 1.2 - Extranet Loginlit.powerware.com/ll_download.asp?file=Eaton-VPM-v1.2... · 8.1 Installing Red Hat Enterprise Linux OS ... Installing the

4.3 Installation Script Interaction

The installation script prompts for a series of inputs to configure the installation correctly.

Note: Edit the /etc/hosts file prior to starting the install script to include the hostname and IP

address of the host or the script will fail.

Note: If you are prompted for not running a supported operating system, discontinue the

installation script and contact Customer Support.

Note: VPM has the ability to run the installation in transactional mode. If the upgrade process

is terminated abnormally, the upgrade script will restore both the application directory and

database prior to the migration process.

Follow these steps: (be careful, there is no undo process once you hit enter)

1. Discontinue Python processes that are running by answering yes when prompted. 2. Specify the following information:

a. Time zone Region Type the region that matches the time zone to be set for the server. You must select from the options given and type them exactly as they appear. For example, in the United States select “America”

Request the License 17 Server & OS Installation Guide

5 Request the License

1. For each server, generate the license request key file by executing this command: /opt/VDC/bin/vdckeyreq> /opt/Install/key.req

2. For installations other than “all-in-one” it is recommended that you give a unique name to each key request, for example masterkey.req or probekey.req.

3. Email the key.reg file(s) to the Optimum Path Licensing department, and the license activation key will be sent to you. Also include the URL used for the installation.

5.1 Install the License

To activate the software, you must apply your valid license key to enable features in the

application. If a USB license key is being used, plug in the USB key to the server and follow these

instructions to generate and install the software license on each server.

Follow these steps:

1. Copy the license key file to a local directory and then use WinSCP to copy it to /opt/VDC/.vdc on the VDC server.

2. Execute the permission setting script as follows: /opt/VDC/bin/setperm

3. Reboot by executing this command: reboot

When the server reboots, the processes automatically start. You can access the application on

the master server by using the 3D Client software or the 2D web user interface. To access the

VDC application, enter the system URL in the browser.

The default access combination is user = admin and password = Monitor#1.

System administrators are strongly encouraged to change the default admin user password

immediately after installation is completed.

5.2 Add More Licenses to the Existing Server

You can add more licenses to an existing installation of the server and enable the application to

recognize the new license files. This procedure describes how to activate the license key on the

server.

Follow these steps:

1. Type this command: rm –f /opt/VDC/.vdc/*
