uniFLOW Serverless Secure Printing

1 General

Small and middle-sized companies face the same requirements in terms of a secureprinting of all kinds of documents like big companies. They often have a slim and efficientIT infrastructure, including printers suiting the size of the office. Data protection andconfidentiality is a big issue for them.

However, server based secure printing solutions are often incompatible, as either theserver based solution is oversized or the security requirements cannot be met. The basicidea of uniFLOW Serverless Secure Printing is to provide Secure Printing, Follow MePrinting, and authentication at the device, at a price, that makes uniFLOW SSP (SSP =Serverless Secure Printing) affordable for small installations with up to five devices.

The user experience in an SSP environment is as follows:

1. The users print their jobs to their Serverless Secure Print queue. That is to say theychoose Print in their application and select the printer that is configured for uniFLOWSSP.

2. In the pop-up that is displayed, the users choose the authentication method for the logonat the device.

3. The users walk to the device of their choice (with SSP activated), log in with the chosenauthentication method and can print out their jobs.

*Regarding the compatibility with other drivers please refer to the White Paper"Driver and Device Cross Compatibility". We will continuously update thisWhite Paper so that you will always find the latest devices in this document.

Limitations:

An installation of uniFLOW SSP in server based environments is notsupported

uniFLOW SSP is not working across network segments

Maximum 5 devices

Maximum 50 users

Maximum 1000 print jobs

Internet Connection:

(mandatory for license activation / transfer)

SSP only supports a maximum of five devices. Any additional device will notbe licensed. The SSP Client Status Page lists all devices and showswhether the devices are licensed or not.

If more than 50 clients are using the uniFLOW SSP PC Client, the uniFLOWSSP PC client's status page will list all imageRUNNERs without a green dotfor the 51. user onwards, meaning that no device will be available for retrievingthe jobs.

Note that the unlicensed devices/clients may change, based on the bootsequence of the devices/PC Clients, where the above will always display theavailability to the end user. So a user may be able to release print jobs ondevice A today and on device F tomorrow, but no-longer on device A, whenmore than five devices are available.

A maximum of 1000 simultaneous print jobs can be in the system. This hugeamount is sufficient, as you will generally, have no more than 5 devices inSSP environments. The 1001 and any further jobs will not be printed anymore.

3.1 The MEAP Applets

MEAP Technology

The Canon MEAP technology, which stands for Multi functional Embedded ApplicationPlatform, is an embedded platform for developing software that customizes and automatesany MEAP enabled device. With the MEAP technology we are able to address specificworkflow requirements of Canon customers.

General Architecture

The MEAP Applets of uniFLOW are Java-based applications that are installed on theimageRUNNER. They are used to display information from the uniFLOW ServerlessSecure Printing queue to the end users on the control panel of the Canon imageRUNNER.

The Applets

If you purchase uniFLOW Serverless Secure Printing you will get two Applets in onepackage. One is the uniFLOW Secure/Public Printing Applet, designed for secure printing. The second one is the uniFLOW Login Manager, which enables controlled access toMEAP enabled MFPs.

Secure/Public Printing Applet

The Secure/Public Printing Applet allows the users to use the control panel of CanonMEAP enabled imageRUNNER devices for additional Secure Printing functionalities. In aServerless Secure Printing environment with MEAP enabled devices the users submit theirprint jobs to a virtual print queue. Then, the users can release and print out their print jobs atany MEAP device configured for Serverless Secure Printing. After identification theimageRUNNER displays the personal print queue of the logged in user with all secure printjobs waiting in that queue. Users can select the print job(s) they want to print using thecontrol panel of the imageRUNNER.

uniFLOW Login Manager

The uniFLOW Login Manager allows access to the functions of MEAP enabled MFPs toauthenticated users only. Authentication is performed via PIN code, Username &Password, Job code or an ID card that can be read by the MiCard reader available forSSP.

For more information about licensing this MEAP Applet, refer to the Licensing the MEAPApplets

By means of thisLAN you have to issue the license files for the Secure/Public Printing Applet and theuniFLOW Login Manager using the Canon License Management System.

This LAN will then be needed for issuing the license files for the Secure/Public PrintingApplet and the uniFLOW OM Login Manager in the Canon License ManagementSystem. For more information on how to use the Canon License Management Systemplease refer to the relevant Canon documentation.

For each MEAP Applet you will need a license file (.lic file) and an application file (.jar file). As mentioned above you will obtain the lic.-files from the Canon License ManagementSystem. The .jar files (MEAP Application files) can be downloaded from the Secure FTPsite (ftp.cidc.canon-europe.com) or from the Canon Europe Software Download Centre. The installation of the two files on the imageRUNNER is described in detail in the nextparagraph.
