Time to meet and greet!

Visitors and guests: None. What’s up with that?

Announcements: --District Conference is May 3-4 in Champaign. Register at the district website. --Group Study Exchange between our District 6490 and District 1440 in Denmark will happen Sept. 1-30. Our district needs to supply a team leader. Apply on the district website. --Mark has been meeting with the presidents-elect of the other Bloomington-Normal Rotary clubs. The five presidents have met monthly through their year, and the new crop plans to continue that effort to share ideas and coordinate. They’re planning a family-oriented Oktoberfest at Timber Pointe. Someone from our club will be needed to help plan it. --Veterans Day One on One committee is meeting. Mark would like to have an additional member of our club involved in the planning. --Mark plans to get together with the board of the ISU Rotaract Club to get acquainted and perhaps join forces on some things. --Pennies for Polio is Friday, May 16 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wear your blue T-shirt and have fun and fellowship, collecting money from McDonald’s customers for a good cause. Last year, the five B-N Rotary Clubs collected $3,519.55 for Polio Plus. --Rotary Night at the Cornbelters will be held June 6. Tickets are $10, and the money is due on May 9. This is NOT a fund-raiser. It’s simply a chance to promote Rotary and have some fun with Rotarians. --Andy Copenhaver and Mark plan an orientation for our new members on April 28 in the ISU Faculty Staff Commons room located on the first floor of the Bone Student Center behind Einstein’s Bagels. --Evergreen Memorial Cemetery will host an event to honor local men and women who served in the military. The event will feature free narrated historical trolley tours and refreshments. See www.evergreen-cemetery.com for more information. --Memorial Day is coming, and it’s time for Rotarians to carry flags at the head of the parade. --Bill Semlak thanked members who helped with the Adopt a Highway effort last week. --Becky Goeckner hopes to update the club directory soon. Please contact her if your listing should be updated. --Linda Healy reminds us that Friends Forever is raffling off a $3,500 trip to Mexico to raise money for the peace camp. Tickets are $100. See Linda or Hank Campbell. --Linda also reported that Bruce Bergethon is doing well after a heart attack.

--Art Drake begged and pleaded for help with the Spoke during the coming months, especially in dire need of a writer for May. As long as he was humbling himself, he politely requested that our new members like Normal Rotary’s Facebook page.

Normal Rotary Foundation: John A. Bishop spoke for a few minutes about the Normal Rotary Foundation. This is separate from both the Normal Rotary Club and the Rotary International Foundation, which operates at the international level. Normal Rotary Foundation was established to support Normal Rotary Club in its local efforts. The Normal Rotary Foundation provides a conduit for tax-deductible donations to causes like Coats for Kids and our High School Student Scholarships.

With the passing of longtime Rotarian John Morris came a new opportunity for the Normal Rotary Foundation. John Morris requested that memorial donations be made to the Normal Rotary Foundation, resulting in 24 donations totaling $2,000.

The Normal Rotary Foundation has made some decisions regarding the use of those donations. $500 will go to Coats for Kids. $140 will go to Normal Rotary’s literacy effort, matching donations raised from Rotary members. $500 will go to Friends Forever, on top of the Normal Rotary’s current donation. $500 will go to provide bottled water to homeless people through the Clare House. The rest of the money will be set aside for future Normal Rotary projects.

John Morris’ generous consideration of Normal Rotary Foundation reminds us all to keep the foundation in mind for future donations, memorials, bequests, etc.

Can’t remember if there was a Mystery Host, but the Judge was by-passed for today. Art Drake was the lucky lottery winner and was kept busy collecting Happy Fines from our members. Two members noted that former Normal Rotary Club members: Arley Gillette and Wayne Truex were listed in last week’s Spoke as Gamma Phi Circus Directors.

Jim Carter pointed out that Normal Rotary and other Rotary clubs in B-N were instrumental in developing the Timber Pointe facility for the Easter Seals. The late Ben Gildersleeve led the way, offering numerous fund-raising challenges and matches.

Program: President-Elect Mark Comadena provided his own program, telling club members that he has been overloaded with information as he approaches his presidency in July. He’s currently trying to complete the Planning Guide for Effective Rotary Clubs for submittal to the district. The questionnaire asks many questions that he doesn’t know the answer to, and he asked Rotarians to look it over and supply any information and insights that can help him complete it. He needs to submit the final version by June 30, so please bring your responses next week.

Thought for the Day: “You are not here merely to make a living. You are here in order to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world, and you impoverish yourself if you forget the errand.” -Woodrow Wilson
