Service dogs must avoid contact with Zoo animals even in permitted areas. See next page for more information.
SERVICE DOG MAP
Restricted Area
Sensitive Area
To access the hippo building or Primate World, please see a staff member or
call (719) 633-9925.
We reserve the right to modify this guide and our accessibility policies as appropriate. In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), only fully trained service dogs are permitted on Zoo grounds. The ADA defines service dogs as “dogs that are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities.”
As we strive to provide you with a safe and positive experience, we kindly ask all service animals to be harnessed, leashed, or tethered unless these devices interfere with the service dog’s work or a disability prevents the use of these devices.
In compliance with the ADA, staff may ask the following questions in order to determine if a dog is a service dog:
φ Is this a service dog?
φ Has this dog been trained to assist a guest here today with a disability?
φ What task has this dog been trained to perform?
CHEYENNE MOUNTAIN ZOO’S SERVICE DOG POLICY
Welcome to Cheyenne Mountain Zoo! In order to make your visit more comfortable, please look over this service dog guide and map.
Questions or concerns? Please call (719) 633-9925. We’re happy to help!
SERVICE DOG GUIDEIn compliance with the ADA, service dogs can be “restricted from areas where the animals on display are the natural prey or natural predators of dogs, where the presence of a dog would be disruptive, causing the displayed animals to behave aggressively or become agitated,” or if the safety of any Zoo animal or service dog is in question.
Please be aware of the unique setting in which you are bringing a service dog.
During your visit, service dogs that are not properly trained, are not under the owner’s control, or are displaying adverse reactions to our animal collection may be asked to leave the Zoo. Furthermore, Zoo animals displaying aggressive or agitated behavior because of a service dog’s presence will prompt the removal of the service dog from that area. If this is a common recurrence, it may warrant removal of the service dog from the Zoo.
If for whatever reason a service dog must be removed from the Zoo – including if your dog simply needs a break or you would like to visit a restricted area – our Admissions Team can take care of the service dog in
“Doggie DayCare” (vacancy permitting).
If you need assistance while within the Zoo, please call our admissions team at (719) 633-9925 ext. 111.
WAYFINDING WITH YOUR SERVICE DOG IN THE ZOO
Restricted Areas
Some animals can strongly react to the presence of an animal outside of their enclosure. For the safety of you, your service dog, and our animal collection, certain areas are restricted. Please also see the map inside this guide.
Included in these restricted areas are places where Zoo animals can choose to freely roam among guests, or areas where there is potential for contact. Attractions and rides are restricted as well.
Restricted areas:
Budgie Buddies
Carousel
My Big Backyard
Penguin Beach in Water’s Edge: Africa
Shrine of the Sun
Sky Ride
The Loft
Wallaby Walkabout in Australia Walkabout
Sensitive Areas
Some areas, while not restricted, may pose an increased potential for the presence of a dog to be disruptive or at increased risk. These areas are considered sensitive due to unique circumstances that vary throughout the day (e.g. feeding opportunities/encounters).
For the safety of you, your service dog, and our animal collection, you are welcome to take your service dog through these areas while practicing extra caution.
Sensitive areas:
Giraffe Boardwalk & Building
Free-Access Animal Encounters
