Moreover, there are three theatres, 4 cinemas and many museums. Especially the Rhine and its promenade characterize the town. During the summer months, you will often see people sitting in bars or cafés, but also simply sitting outside and enjoying a coffee or a beer. Down at the Rhine you can walk around, sit down on the grass, and enjoy the sun or a barbecue with friends. The city has its own student attractions. With 197.041 (04/2006) inhabitants and nearly 40.000 students, Mainz is clearly a student town. In all the cafés, bars and little clubs there is always action-all day and night.Mainz is especially famous all over Germany for the carnival that is called Fastnacht here (in the dialect Fassenacht). When the big procession goes through Mainz on Carnival Monday, the whole town is alive, there are parties everywhere (more information on the carnival under www.mainz.de –leisure time/sport/festivities/fastnacht). The local football

club Mainz 05 is also very important. They are playing in the 2nd league and all the fans are celebrating in the stadium near the university, around it or in one of the bars.Mainz, the capital of Rhineland-Palatinate is located in the Rhine-Main-area. In the surroundings, there are other well-known cities as for example Frankfurt, Wiesbaden, Darmstadt, Koblenz or Mannheim. Many trips are for free with the students’ ticket. Typical for the landscape are the wine fields and plantations.More information on Mainz on the official website: www.mainz.deBackInformation on the campusThe Johannes Gutenberg-University is a campus university. REPORTSHere, former exchange students tell you about their experiences in Mainz and how they liked it. You have different reports in different languages at your disposition.Lionel: France, FrenchFanny: France, FrenchEvá: Hungary, HungarianPaul: Ghana, English

BECOMING A TOM TUTOR Tutors of MainzHello student of Mainz! You are looking for contact to exchange students? You want to help them to integrate themselves? You like to get to know people from all over the world and spend time with them? You are investing as much time as you want. The whole activity is voluntary work. It is a great opportunity to get to know other students!Apply and become a TOM tutor!! Online applicationWhen you have questions, you can contact Eva Gerold ([email protected], Tel: +49 6131 392 4982).Who becomes my TOM tutor? The exchange student will also fill in an online application (login-area). With the information resulting out of the application form, we will find a TOM partner for you. With your location, your hobbies and your subject we will find the perfect TOM partner for you. We will send the information out of your application form to your TOM partner. You will get the information on your TOM partner at a meeting where we will inform you once again about the course of the program, about news which occur in the semester. Moreover, you will meet other TOM tutors at this meeting. You will find the TOM program of each month on the site program. When you know who your TOM partner is, you can contact him via email, telephone or in the TOM connection group in the Studivz. When do they come to Mainz? The exchange students for the summer term will always come at the beginning of March (University of Applied Sciences) or April (university). For the winter term, they will arrive at the beginning of September (University of Applied Sciences) or October (university). As they mostly need support during the first time, it would be very good if you were here at this time to be there for him/her.

How can I help?First of all, the exchange students need someone to contact, someone who knows Mainz and the university system. It differs a lot how much help the different exchange students will need (it depends a lot on their personality). But all of them need contact to students in Mainz to make them see Germans and the German lifestyle: daily life, private parties, maybe even trips- it depends on you. Most of the official papers and affairs will be organized by the university or the University of Applied Sciences. At the University of Applied Sciences, there are special tutors helping exchange students. At the university, there are the Info Days, organized by the International Department. There, all the newcomers will organize the formalities together.

Page 57: Service International Students of the Studierendenwerk …ffu.vse.cz/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/sis-homepage-en…  · Web viewService International Students of the Studierendenwerk

For you to know here is the general course of events. More information also on the website of the university. However, there are still lots of things to do and you can help with many official formalities. But: the first contact is always very important. You can find a sort of checklist under First steps.Collection serviceWhen your exchange student arrives, you can meet him at the station and accompany him/her to his/her room/apartment or meet him/her somewhere in town. In general, the students find their ways to the residences with the directions, but if you want to help from the first moment on, it is nice to meet him/her-extremely reassuring for some.Of course, you can communicate with your exchange student before-either via email or telephone. Maybe he/she has already had the first questions?

Parties, Nightlife, cultureTake your newly arrived exchange students with you when you go out in the evenings. Show him/her what you can do in Mainz: private parties, discos, bars theatres, museums, surroundings, shopping….TOM, the International Service and the AEGEE organize special Erasmus parties, an Erasmus-breakfast, a trip round the different bars, guided tours and trips. If you want to offer something or if you have additional ideas, TOM is looking forward to your proposals. Write to us!Open up a bank accountNon-EuropeansAll non-Europe exchange students need to open up a bank account. From this bank account they need to transfer the matricualtion fees, even before the Info Days (more information on the yellow sheet, the approval document). You will also need the bank account for regular payments (e.g. rent).ProblemsSometimes, there are problems with opening up a bank account, because exchange students have no official registration (police) at this moment. Go to the Bürgeramt (Local public office) together with your TOM partner and simply get registered. Then, you can open a bank account at any bank. Besides, you will find more information in the Studivz in the TOM, tutors of Mainz-group. There are hints from last years’ tutors and tips which banks you can even get a bank account at without official registration.University: transfer the matriculation feesStudents need to transfer the matriculation fees, even before the Info Days (more information on the yellow sheet, the approval document). This transfer is the pre-condition for their matriculation. There are several possibilities:Europe:

The exchange students open up a bank account (as it is for free, this is no problem. Moreover, they will be able to transfer the rent directly from their bank account and in case they want to work, they have to bank account to transfer their pay)

You transfer the fees for them and they will give it back to you in cash money They will do a by-cash transfer to the bank account (ca. 5€)

Shopping possibilitiesMany exchange students have to buy the most essential things when they arrive in Mainz, e.g. blankets, linen, dishes and cutlery because these things are not in the residences. Tips for cheap furnishing stuff: Eva Gerold, [email protected]

Page 58: Service International Students of the Studierendenwerk …ffu.vse.cz/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/sis-homepage-en…  · Web viewService International Students of the Studierendenwerk

Of course, they do not know where the next grocery store is when they have just arrived. You can explore the environment together.

Public TransportThe exchange students can use buses and trams for free from the second day of the Info Days on. Then, they get a temporary student ticket. Otherwise, they will have to pay; they either buy a weekly ticket (ca. 19€, seven consecutive days), a daily ticket (ca. 5, 40€ up to the end of the day) or a normal ticket (ca.2, 10€ for each trip). They will only get the real student card when they have been matriculated and can then profit from the whole public transport.Official registration at the local public officeAll students have to register in Mainz, the exchange students as well. This means that they will have to present themselves at the local public office with their rental agreement, their student card and their passport and get registered as an inhabitant. The local public office is at the station (Kaiserstr.3-5). When you accompany your TOM partner, it is easier for him/her. The preparation for the official registration takes place during the Info Days. You will find the opening hours under www.mainz.de.

Non-European: prolongation of the visaIn this case, it is very important to have a student of Mainz with you to solve upcoming problems. Go to the local public office, department: foreign affairs. You will have to make an appointment with the right contact person approximately 4 weeks before the visa expires. Which contact person is responsible for your exchange student can be found it by looking at the first letter of the name as it is written in the passport (in Latin letters). You can make an appointment by telephone for a personal meeting during the following reception hours: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday from 9am to 12 o’clock and from 2 to 3 pm.Tel.:+49 6131 122977Without an appointment by telephone, there will be no treatment of your demand. Please be there in time, otherwise you will have to make a new appointment!!Contact:Stadtverwaltung Mainz- 33 - Bürgeramt Department of foreign affairsStadthaus, Lauteren-Flügel, Kaiserstraße 3-5

To get a new visa or to prolong the old one, you will necessarily have to bring: a valid passport (valid at least 15 months) actual approval document and confirmation of health insurance or an actual

matriculation document with subject code and semesters and a confirmation about your scholarship

40€ for the first visa, 20€ for the prolongation (for students from the EU and EFTA-countries as well as for scholars (official scholarships) for free).

InternetAt the residences of the Studierendenwerk, the internet is for free, there is a LAN rate. Each room has its own access, but a network card is necessary. You may get cables from members of the Network AG. In Hechtsheim, Gonsenheim and Weisenau, there is wireless LAN. There, you should contact the caretaker for an internet access. If you arrive before the Info Days or if you want to organize it on your own, you need a ZDV account. At first, you need an account at the ZDV (Zentrum für Datenverarbeitung). Look at the map how to get there. For the account, you need your rental agreement and your matriculation document (University: yellow sheet). You need to bring a few minutes’ time because you will have to do a test.Network card and cablesFor the network, you need a 10/100 MBit-Ether-Net-card and a twisted-pair-cable (No crossover cable). You should get the network card at every computer store; many new notebooks have one already integrated. You can buy the right cable (10 m long) at the Network AG. Computer name and working groupIn the network, your computer is identified with its name. You can choose your user name (creativity is permitted), but you cannot use Umlaut, special signs, underscore and blanks. It has to be between 3 and 15 signs. Moreover, it has to be unambiguous in the working group. Valid names would be: Nutri-matic, CaptainCork, HAL,…To be able to access the computers of others, you need to subscribe to the working group of your residence.

WINDOWS 95/98/ME/NTClick right onto “Network”, then choose “Characteristic”. Choose: Identification and a computer name and then your working group (link to the list).WINDOWS 2000/XP

Page 64: Service International Students of the Studierendenwerk …ffu.vse.cz/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/sis-homepage-en…  · Web viewService International Students of the Studierendenwerk

Click right on “Working environment” then choose “Characteristics”. Identification of the network (Windows 2000) or computer name (Windows XP). There, click “Characteristics”, fill in a computer name and your working group (link to list).

ADDRESS OF NETWORK CARDSNow, you will have to find out the address of your network card (e.g. 00-AO-10-A9-00-17). It is different, depending on your system:WINDOWS 95b/98/MEPress Start-*complete: fill in winipcfg and press enter. In the window that opens up, you will find the network card-address. Attention: Make sure that the Ethernet- card is selected (not the PPP adaptor which is the wrong address).

WINDOWS 95a/NT/2000/XPPress Start-*complete: fill in cmd and press enter. You are asked to fill in a code: ipconfig and press enter. Now, you can read off the address of the network card (NOT the PPP adaptor!!).

Network contractYou should pass by the Network AG and get a contract about how to use the internet. Read it carefully and fill it in. When you have finished, sign it and hand it over to one of the members. As soon as we have the contract, we will register you in the user-databank and you can use the internet.

Registration in the networkWhen you start your computer, you will only have access to the intern network. To use the internet, you will have to start your browser and go to the website of the University: http://login.uni-mainz.de.There, you log on with your username and your password. You are registered as long as you cut off the internet connection (normally when you shut down your computer). Afterwards, you will have to log on again (There may be problems when you have a firewall which is wrongly configured, in this case, contact the Network AG).Using the NetworkTo prevent misuse, the amount of data for transfers from the internet is limited to 10GB download and 1 GB upload. Despite this limit, you can upload and download as much as you want in the Intranet. At last, you will have to download an anti-virus-scanner and maybe even a firewall. How to do this and much more can be found on the websites of the residences: http://temp1.
