The impact to a business can be enormous.

Downtime ranges from 300–1,200 hours per year , depending on industry1

In some industries, downtime costs can equal up to 16 percent of revenue 1

For 32 percent of organizations, just four hours of downtime could be severely damaging2

1 Infonetics Research, The Costs of Enterprise Downtime: North American Vertical Markets 2005, Rob Dearborn and others, January 2005.

2 Continuity Central, “Business Continuity Unwrapped,” 2006, http://www.continuitycentral.com/feature0358.htm

30 percent of all businesses that have a major fire go out of business within a year. 70 percent fail within five years. (Home Office Computing Magazine)

60 percent of companies that lose their data will shut down within 6 months of the disaster.

50 percent of businesses that found themselves without data management for 10 days or more due to a disaster filed for bankruptcy immediately. (National Archives & Records Administration in Washington)

Basic Situation – Remote Data is Big and Growing

There are more than 4 million remote/branch offices in the U.S. alone, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Many of these offices belong to multi-national companies based in other countries.

The amount of data in remote offices is increasing with the overall growth in electronic information and the requirements for longer data retention periods

However, the percentage of total corporate data in remote offices is increasing as companies expand operations into new markets and attempt to move closer to their customers, suppliers and partners

Result: large enterprises have between 35% and 65% of their data in remote/branch offices (per Gartner, IDC, ESG, Taneja Group, et.al.)

Remote Office Data may not be Well-Protected

Most remote offices do not have the IT resources and processes in place to provide data center class protection and recovery for their digital information

Backups are performed by non-IT personnel that have other jobs; they often forget to run the backup, or they do it wrong.

If it doesn’t get backed up, it can’t be restored

Tape-Based Backup has its Issues

Tape-based systems rely on manual processes that introduce significant risks to data protection and recovery

– Labeling, loading, unloading, storage, transport, etc.

Physically moving tapes off-site for disaster recovery also opens the door to data security risks

– Tapes get lost/stolen on a regular basis

Recovering lost data from tape is a painful and often impossible task

– Usually requires expert IT support, which is costly and time-consuming

Solving the Data Recovery Problem

Pick the point-in-time that you want to recover from and initiate a Virtual Restore operation; the entire database will be made available within seconds

Good luck; you’re going to need to fly in an expert, and you’ll be down for days

You discover that a critical database has been corrupted (maybe by a virus) for the past couple of weeks

Open the FastBack Restore browser and drag & drop the needed files back to where you need them

Call tape vendor’s support desk and have them walk you through loading the right sequence of tapes, and hope you don’t over-write any of today’s data

Accidental or malicious deletion of critical files

Automated, non-disruptive backup occurs during normal business hours in the background

Pray nothing fails until the next night (or whenever the next backup gets run successfully)

Office staff forgets to run the backup, or does it wrong

Solving the Data Recovery Problem

Use FastBack for Bare Machine Recovery to reconstitute the office’s workload in another location, within an hour

Restart operations from scratch whenever you can get into a (new) facility; suffer lost customers, revenue

The office is hit by a <insert your favorite disaster here>

Virtual Restore will have you up and running within seconds of putting a new disk on-line

Tell customers to wait for a few hours or days while you try to restore from tape

The disk in your SQL Server crashes

Initiate FastBack for Microsoft Exchange and drag-and-drop whatever e-mail objects you need or send them to a new mailbox

Tell the boss it can’t be done, and start looking for another job

Your boss has lost an important contact or message in his Microsoft Outlook e-mail and needs it now

Customer Benefits: Scalability Improvements

Double the internal database size (from 512GB to 1TB minimum)– Protect and manage twice* as many objects on a single TSM server

9x increase in the size of the internal database Recovery Log– Enables an increase* in the number of concurrent operations (backup jobs)

from a greater number of clients, or an increase in the size of existing backup jobs, or a combination of both

Integrated data de-duplication (in TSM Extended Edition only)– 10x increase* in the amount of data available for recovery from disk

– More data on disk = faster recovery time, as compared to data on tape

– Post-process does not impact backup operations; automated space reclamation

Support for very large HSM-managed file systems– The Tivoli Storage Manager Backup-Archive client can do a full incremental

backup of file systems containing 100,000,000 files or more*

Enhanced ability to scale across multiprocessor systems

* Results will vary depending on user’s environment, type of data, expiration policies, data change rates, etc.
