Overview Within Operations Manager 2007, you have a variety of ways to monitor windows services

depending on the type of service and what you are looking to achieve.

Authoring Templates

The Authoring Template allows you to monitor any service created with the call

SERVICE_WIN32_OWN_PROCESS – these are the only services that will display in the wizard.

The Authoring template creates the following automatically:

� A class called Authoring Template - <TemplateName>

� Monitors for Entity Health:

Availability

Service Running State – from Windows Service Library

Service Running State

Performance

Windows Service CPU Usage Monitor

Windows Service Memory Usage Monitor

- Explain the 2 services

- Check monitors for enabled \ disabled \ overrides

Basic Service Monitor

The Basic Service Monitor allows you to monitor services created with

SERVICE_WIN32_SHARE_PROCESS

Authoring Console

To use wildcards or monitor more than one service at a time, you need to use the Authoring

Console.

Service Monitoring using the Authoring Template

I’ll use the Print Spooler service as an example. The process I will use is:

� Create a Group (in a custom management pack) and add windows computer objects to the

group for servers that have the service running.

Create Group:

Make sure you save in its own (new, custom) management pack (I’ll call mine zzAuthoring Template

Service MonitorPrintSpooler)

Add explicit members - windows computer object for the server(s) that runs the service

Use the search functionality to manually select the servers

Click Next through to the end of the wizard and then Finish

Authoring Template:

Start the Authoring Template for Windows Service

Select the correct management pack

Note- target at the group that was created earlier

Decide whether to enable performance monitoring for the service. The monitors will be created

whether you select this option or not. But they will be enabled \ disabled as you decide.

Discovery

This is "disabled" when you look at it but if you check, you'll see that is enabled via an override

Monitors

Note that it appears that there are 2 monitors one from the Windows Service Library and one from

the custom management pack. The Windows Service Library monitor is actually disabled via an

override (this is by default).

Health Explorer - see override is set by OpsMgr.

Recovery - auto start service

State View
