OLD TESTAMENT LESSONGENESIS 11:1-9

Now the whole earth had one language and the same words. And as they migrated from the east, they came upon a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. And they said to one another, ‘Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.’ And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar. Then they said, ‘Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves; otherwise we shall be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.’ The Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which mortals had built. And the Lord said, ‘Look, they are one people, and they have all one language; and this is only the beginning of what they will do; nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. Come, let us go down, and confuse their language there, so that they will not understand one another’s speech.’ So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city. Therefore it was called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth; and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.

COLLECT

Holy God, like a rushing wind your Spirit moved upon the first disciples on the day of Pentecost, and like a purifying fire your Spirit seared their hearts and minds with salvation. Send your Spirit upon your church in this time and place, stir up our courage, and rouse us for prophetic witness, that we may join with them to proclaim to the world your mighty deeds of power in Jesus Christ. Amen.

PASTORAL PRAYER

LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

OFFERTORYCOME DOWN, O LOVE DIVINE | GERALD CUSTER

Come down, O love divine; seek thou this soul of mine, and visit it with your own ardor flowing; O comforter, draw near; within my heart appear and kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing. Oh, let it freely burn, till worldly passions turn to dust and ashes in its heat consuming; and let thy glorious light shine ever on my sight, and clothe me round, the while my path illuming. And so the yearning strong, with which the soul will long, shall far outpass the power of human telling; no soul can guess his grace till it become the place where in the Holy Spirit makes his dwelling.

SCRIPTURE LESSONACTS 2:1-21

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.” All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” But others sneered and said, “They are filled with new wine.”

But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, “Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: ‘In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and yourdaughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’

I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth;

And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

My brother and I threw away the nativity scene we had had as children. That is what happens when you send two sons to sort through your things. It was cold, rainy and dark when we started clearing out things that were stored in the crawl-space under our parents’ home. Both of my parents were in poor health and “breaking-up” house. My brother and I were far too indiscriminate in culling their worldly possessions.

That mistake has been on my mind as I have been “going through” the books I have accumulated over the past forty years of ministry. Heretofore I have simply moved them from one church to another, many of which had not been opened since seminary. Even the unread ones have been like old friends, I have known where to find them if I needed them.

In so many ways they have shaped me by being God’s spoken word to me. Among the books are some which I never finished and some which I have read again and again; some have value not because of what they said but because of who gave them to me.

I am going through them, one by one, wondering which to save and which to discard. I am not the least bit sad because I know that I am taking the best of these “friends” with me and making room for new friends. I am excited about new authors and new words from God that come with the sight and smell of a new book.

Whether read on a tablet or phone, audio book or good old fashion paper, I am grateful to God for speaking and shaping ordinary folks, through the written word, into light for the world.

NOTE FROM THE PASTORS

Page 23: SERVICE OF WORSHIP

23

I’m frequently asked questions about our Southeast Raleigh Table, Edenton Street’s upcoming third campus. Below are the top five tidbits I believe you’ll find most helpful:

1. The pilot missional community for our SE Raleigh Table multiplied in January. The individuals in these two communities comprise the core group of people who are committed to helping Edenton Street launch a site in our east downtown/southeast Raleigh community. Most are already members, others are friends and neighbors, and some are those who live, work, or play in east downtown/southeast Raleigh and just happen to be excited about what we’re doing as a church. You don’t have to live in southeast Raleigh to be a part of this campus. You simply need to have a heart for the neighborhood and for our neighbors.

2. People often wonder where in southeast Raleigh we hope to have presence. Our target geographic areas are the neighborhoods in east downtown and southeast Raleigh, specifically the communities nestled between Shaw and St. Augustine’s Universities.

3. “Where is your church located?” First, let’s reframe that question and ask, “Where is our new campus located?” We’re not planting new churches; we’re launching new sites. Secondly, to date we haven’t secured a property. That’s why we use the generic moniker, “SE Raleigh Table.” We’ll transition our name to “Church on whatever street name the property sits on” when it’s found. Believe me, you’ll be the first to know!

4. Currently our SE Raleigh Table worships once a month in the Bulla Building - 301 W. Jones St. - at 11 a.m. The summer worship schedule is 5/15, 6/19, 7/17, and 8/21. We’ll move to weekly worship on Sunday, September 11.

5. How can you help? Pray for breakthrough with our property search. We know church is not a building; it’s a called people. Nonetheless, we also know how important it is for the people of God to have an incarnational presence with the people God has called them to love, celebrate, befriend, and serve alongside. Church on ?, here we come!

GOOD EATS: A SUMMER SERMON SERIESFor two miles along Blount and Person streets, from South Park through Downtown and up to Mordecai, is Raleigh’s food corridor. The Bible starts with the story of creation and God saying, “Let the earth bring forth vegetation.” Soon that vegetation contributes to the fall when man and woman eat the forbidden fruit. Good Eats, a summer sermon series, will look at famous meals, the people who ate them, and food as a metaphor (example: bread of life; land flowing with milk and honey.) Join us this summer for Good Eats!
