Transport connections

Be it by car, aeroplane or a bike, just the journey to Utsjoki is a part of the experience. The nearest airport

in Finland is located in Ivalo, and those on the Norwegian side of the border in Kirkenes and Lakselv. All airports have car rental services. The train takes you as far as Rovaniemi, where you can continue to Utsjoki by coach. Enjoy your journey!

There is a wide range of activi-ties in Utsjoki around the clock and throughout the year. How

about some mountain biking, hiking, mushroom-picking, an exciting snow-mobile safari or a trip to the Arctic Ocean, or what about some geocaching or nature photography?

On snowy winter days, the quiet wilderness of Utsjoki offers peace of mind and new

challenges for even the most seasoned wanderer. Try ski touring to the fells or Nordic skiing in the wilderness or on our marked tracks suitable for skiers of all levels. The wilderness we offer is not characterised by the banging and hum-ming of ski lifts or large, noisy groups of people. Feel free to slow down!

Utsjoki village centre is the heart of the area, and most public services are located in the mu-

nicipal centre. The town hall, healthcare clinic, library, indoor swimming pool, kindergarten, Utsjokisuu School and Upper secondary school are all located in Utsjoki municipal centre. Alaköngäs

Alaköngäs is the most popular loca-tion for recreational fishing and fishing from the bank along the

Teno River. Alaköngäs is a series of rapids reaching for about 6 kilometres, with a de-scent of 25 metres.

Boratbokcá, located just below Alakön-gäs, is one of the most appreciated rapids amongst fly-fishers. The 400-metre stretch is easy to ford, thanks to the sandy river bed. Lures can be used in the signposted spin fishing areas of Alaköngäs, Yläköngäs and upstream of Matinköngäs on the Inari River.

Fishing regulations and permitsFurther information on fishing regulations and where to buy permits for the teno river can be found online in the tenoinfo information bro­chure. Local businesses are happy to answer any questions related to fishing and all permit sales points have detailed maps of the river as well as fishing and rowing areas available.

in order to prevent gyrodactylus salaris from spreading, all fishing equipment brought from the outside the municipalities of enontekiö, Utsjoki and inari must be dry or they must be disinfected in designated points prior to fishing in waterways running to the arctic ocean. the disinfection sta­tions are located at the teno river fishing permit selling points. its salmon, but it is also an ancient travelling route used for trade and administration as early as in the 16th century. a wider route for transporting goods around alaköngäs rapids was formed along the teno. today, this route is a museum road with a breathtaking view of the river.

b Alajalve. the most extensive ancient settle­ment in Utsjoki dates back to the stone age, Bronze age and early iron age. the settle­ment was in summer use only and served for fishing salmon.
