Everything in Mary
leads us toward her
Son, our only Savior,
by whose foreseen
merits she was
preserved immaculate
and full of grace;
everything in Mary
lifts up our hearts to
the praise of the
Holy Trinity.
-Pope Paul IV-
“God placed Mary far
above all the angels and
saints and so filled her
with every heavenly
grace from His own
divine treasury so that
her innocence and
holiness exceeded every
creature but God
Himself."

PASTOR’S CORNER
ALICE TRAINING
On Tuesday evening, August 23rd, from 6 to 8 p.m., the Estes Park Police
Department and the YMCA of the Rockies will conduct “ALICE” (Violent Intruder Training) at Our Lady of the Mountains
Church. The training is designed to teach unarmed civilians to respond as effectively as possible to an armed attack in a church
or in other public places.
The training is free and open to all interested parishioners, including
middle and high-school students with the signed permission of their parents. We especially encourage ushers, greeters,
church staff, religious-education teachers and volunteers to attend if they can. The program will begin promptly at six o’clock.
For more information, please visit the church’s website at olmestes.org.
Welcome Parishioners and Visitors to Our Lady of the Mountains Parish.
Today’s readings present us with a challenge to our faith. During His journey to
various towns, someone asked Jesus, “will only a few people be saved?” Jesus tells
His questioners that to be saved requires that they strive to enter through the narrow
gate. Jesus has freely offered salvation to everyone. But, will we choose salvation
from the many opportunities available? Or will we slide through one of the larger
gates in life that is much easier and perhaps more fun to do in the short term? We
must strive to accept Jesus’ offer of salvation.
Salvation is a pure gift offered to us by Jesus. There is nothing that we can do to earn
this gift; it is free from God. But a gift is not a gift until it is accepted. As human
beings, we have free will and can choose either to accept His gift or to reject it. Jesus
has shown us a narrow path with a narrow gate to enter. We must choose this narrow
path that will lead to a narrow gate. Jesus tells us to strive to enter heaven through the
narrow gate. As disciples of Jesus, we must die to our self and be pruned in order to
enter heaven.
It is scary even to think about the wide road that will lead to hell. But the bottom line
is that if we stay close to Jesus always—if we make our relationship with Him our
number one priority; if we’re faithful going to Mass; if we read and try to live the
Scriptures; if we examine our conscience honestly every day and get to Confession
whenever we realize we’ve committed a mortal sin; if we seek to love God above all
things and our neighbor as ourselves—then we really have nothing at all to worry
about. Christ will train us, correct us, and discipline us so that we look more and
more like Him. May we strive to enter heaven through the narrow gate.
Have a blessed week.
