From the fervent prayers of some 20 founders, Cascade Methodist Episcopal Church South started in humble quarters 90 years ago, holding its first worship service on October 3, 1926 in a store building on Beecher Street near Cascade Avenue. Presiding Elder Dr. W. T. Hunnicutt was in charge. By December, the charter membership numbered upwards of 120 members. Reverend S. A. F. Wagner was appointed the first official pastor of the new church and served from 1926 to 1928. Under Pastor Wagner’s leadership, the property at the corner of Cascade Avenue and Richland Road, known as 875, Cascade was purchased.

The early years were troublesome. The congregation survived fires, the Great Depression, an explosion, World War II and two major mergers of Methodist denominations. In 1939, we became the Cascade Methodist Church as a result of the merger of the Methodist Episcopal Church North, the Methodist Episcopal Church South and the Methodist Protestant Church.

In April 1968, at the General Conference in Dallas, Texas, the Methodist Church was united with the Evangelical United Brethren Church to form the United Methodist Church. This merger between the denominations instituted a symbol of hope in the southwest Atlanta community: Cascade United Methodist Church.

The first African-American family attended Cascade in 1969, marking the beginning of the racial transition of the Cascade congregation. On April 1, 1970, the first African-American family (Myrtis and Sylvester Allen) officially joined the church under the pastorate of the Reverend William R. Ridgeway.

In 1974, the Reverend Walter L. Kimbrough, a young African-American minister with proven expertise in transitional church ministry, was appointed to Cascade as its seventeenth pastor. The membership and ministries expanded rapidly. Under Pastor Kimbrough’s leadership, the sending forth theme (taken from Philippians 4:13, “We can do all things in Christ who strengthens us.”) was adopted. Congregants would join hands across the aisles and recite the scripture at the conclusion of each worship service. Shortly thereafter, the Director of Music, Allen Green, and the organist, Billy Johnson, penned music for this verse, launching the beginning of our tradition of joining hands and swaying rhythmically as we sing the scripture at the end of service.

In 1986, the Reverend Joseph E. Lowery was appointed to serve as Cascade’s eighteenth pastor. The church experienced tremendous growth; and subsequently, the leadership resolved to expand to the current location at 3144 Cascade Road, referred to by congregants as “The Cathedral.” Under Rev. Lowery’s pastorate, Cascade began the tradition of singing the third stanza of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” for the Contemporary Doxology. Rev. Lowery retired in 1992.

Reverend Kimbrough became Cascade’s nineteenth pastor when he was reappointed to serve in June 1992. He led parishioners into The Cathedral on April 17, 1994 and he continued to inspire new ministries. On Sunday, October 7, 2001, the congregation held a Mortgage Burning Ceremony for The Cathedral on the front steps of the church. Before retiring in 2006, Rev. Kimbrough initiated a capital campaign to purchase 140 acres of property located off Camp Creek Parkway in East Point.

The Reverend Dr. Marvin A. Moss was appointed to Cascade as the twentieth pastor in June 2006. Under his leadership, Cascade’s worship experience, organization, ministries and membership continued to grow. Rev. Moss oversaw the retirement of the debt on the Camp Creek Parkway property, rendering the church debt-free with a clear title to all of its properties.

In June 2014, Pastor Lawrence L. Young became the twenty-first pastor appointed to Cascade. The church continues to be “A Light in the Community” as ministries and leaders seek opportunities to serve and intensify Christ-centered initiatives. To promote effective change and interconnected achievement at Cascade, Pastor Young persistently emphasizes the need to Communicate, Collaborate, and Cooperate. At the 2016 Church Retreat, he introduced a new church theme based on Jeremiah 29:11, Building God’s Kingdom through GOD’s Power, GOD’s Purpose, and GOD’s Plans. Cascade dedicated its 27th Habitat for Humanity home on October 1, 2016. To God Be the Glory for 90 years in ministry and a prosperous, hopeful future!

BISHOP JAMES EDWARD SWANSON, SR.

James Edward Swanson, Sr. was elected a bishop of The United Methodist Church during the Southeastern Jurisdiction Conference of 2004. He was assigned to the Holston Conference in Knoxville, Tennessee. Swanson served the Holston Conference for eight years. Under his tenure, the Sudan Mission was initiated. The number of United Methodist congregations in Sudan grew from three to 30 between 2006 and 2012. A residential home for Sudan’s district superintendent was built and used as a training site for clergy and laity of South Sudan. Plans were laid for a campaign to raise funds for the “Imagine No Malaria” campaign that resulted in $1.2 million dollars raised by the Holston Conference.

On September 1, 2012, Swanson began his tenure as the resident bishop of the Mississippi Annual Conference. He made his first public appearance at the Seashore District one day earlier to be with those affected by Hurricane Isaac. Swanson listened to the people of Mississippi and discovered the Mississippi Conference held four values deep within their hearts: love, generosity, justice and apprenticeship. It is from the Core Four that the 1,100 churches seek to center their unique ministries. Bishop Swanson brought to Mississippi a contagious spirit of hospitality—a determination to excel at being “the you” God created each person to be. His spirited preaching has helped bring life, laughter and light to congPegations in the conference and even an occasional non-Methodist congregation. He has continued to emphasize winning people to Christ, risk taking love, and crossing old boundaries to discover where the Holy Spirit is at work. He is modeling with the extended cabinet how coaching can revolutionize ministry. Cabinet members and other conference groups meet for two, eight-hour sessions each month to be trained in Loving, Learning and Leading. Because of this coaching, Swanson continually asks Mississippians about their Glory Sightings—where they see God at work. Swanson serves on the board of trustees for Emory University, Rust College and Millsaps College. He is the chair of the board of trustees at Gammon Theological Seminary. Swanson is married to Delphine Yvonne Ramsey Swanson. They have the joy of being parents to six adult children: Karen Latrese (Swanson) Jones, James Edward Swanson Jr., Shondell Swanson married to Angela Drain, Carlton Eugene Swanson married to Ivis Rosario, Janae Evonne (Swanson) Brown married to Vernon and Joshua Emile’ Swanson. They are blessed with 11 grandchildren.
