Discipleship Check-up

Our vehicles function best with routine maintenance – oil changes, tire pressure, fluids, belts, and wiper blades – just to name a few. When these items are moni-tored on a regular basis, it is less likely you will need service from a tow truck. The better we care for our vehicles, the better they will perform – helping us get from one place to the next without complications.

Our faith is very similar. Since 2015 we have focused on prayer, study, fasting, worship, helping the hungry/thirsty, welcoming strangers, clothing the naked, and visiting/caring for those who are sick. Without a doubt, we have learned a lot in that time frame. I hope you have drawn closer to the Lord and been more intentional about seek-ing out the least of these in our community.

Knowing we have only one year remaining in this five year process, I figured it was high time for us to complete a discipleship check-up. For the month of August, we will ask for your personal assessment regarding your faith jour-ney. There is no appointment necessary. You don't have to wait in line. You simply need to fill out a short form, stating your progress. We also need your feedback to figure out how the church can better resource you – class options, books, presentations, conversations, etc. We are traveling the same road and it is vital for us to provide assistance to one another.

Come to worship in August for your discipleship check-up. To be sure, it will help us to BE disciples of Christ more fully in order for us to MAKE disciples of Christ.

Ready for my Check-up,

Pastor John

Dear PUMC church family, Thank you so much for the wonderful blanket and gen-erous scholarship. It means so much to know that I have a whole church family look-ing out for me and sup-porting me. It has been wonderful grouping up in such a kind, loving church. Thanks again for all of your kindness and generosity as I move on the next chapter of my life. Karen Martin

To Our Church Family, Please accept our sincere thanks for all of the heartfelt messages, prayers and cards. It has been a difficult few months with my Dad's sudden decline and passing and then Dickie's struggles and finally, surgery for kidney stones. My dad loved his Upper Room-'Large Print Edition' provided by the church for the past few years. During his final days, I had the privilege of reading each day's special message to him. The ladies of our Congrega-tional Care Team provide such a loving and im-portant ministry and Dad always called to tell me when they had been by with goodies, prayers and cheerful conversation. Pastor John was such a good listener and his last visit with Dad was such a comfort to him. Dickie is now well and able to enjoy life. God is good! Sharon and Dickie Baltimore

Thank you for being a place like home to me. Also thank you for presenting me with the opportunity to partake in receiving the scholarship. I am very excited to put that towards funding my college career. Love Amy Adcock

Thank you: " ask, and it will be given to you" Luke 11:9. Thank you ladies for responding to the request for Prayer Shawls / Quilts - the rack is now full and we have a variety to share with those in need when they are needed. How wonderful it is to see the response from our congregation. Thanks for sharing your talents in this ministry. Marvalee Unrein

Dear Friends, I would like to express my sincere thanks, gratitude, and love to my church family for all who visited, called, brought food, sent such beautiful cards and helped Ralph and I in any way during my recent surgery! I thank God for each and every one of you! Pastor John, thank you for being there the day of surgery to pray with Ralph and I and your continued support during the following weeks! What a Blessing it is to be surrounded with such loving and caring friends! Sincerely, Sandy and Ralph Lineweaver

Kids With Purpose We, as a small group, have been assigned to the set up of the CLC for the month of August. I am asking that all Kids With Purpose families sign up to help with CLC set up at a minimum of one time during August. The more hands that are there to help, the quicker the task will be.

United Methodist Women Notes

At our last meeting (the beginning of June), we spent time getting to know the Christ-following women who came before us. Not only did we talk about women inte-gral to the United Methodist Women movement as a whole, but we also heard more about several women from our very own church, and the ways they impacted others for Christ. Curious about more details? Ask us! We'd love to share how we were inspired. By the way, thank you Betty Bowman, Pam Connelly, and Cerise Estep for providing a great lunch for us! Though we did not meet in July, ministry through PUMC's UMW unit has quietly continued. Visits have been made to Powhatan nursing homes, we have maintained a con-nection with United Methodist Family Services, and the finishing touches on contributions to a prison ministry have been organized. There is much more to come in the Fall. Keep your eyes and ears open to find out how and when you can join us!

One more note... (Would you love to have a chance to fellowship and draw closer to God in a beautiful setting before the summer's over? We are sponsoring a one-day retreat for ALL women of the church. See below for details.

Being IN mission is what Jesus asks of us, seeing a need in oth-ers and responding. Nurture and Mission is what these two groups SEWING MIS-

SIONS and PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY are all about. Many people/hands working to provide for oth-ers in need/crisis. This is what has been accomplished since Jan. 1st with the help of prayers, donations, work and commitment from this congregation. Sewing Mission: 217 dresses; 36 shorts; and 65 bags were taken to these locations - Honduras, Indian Reser-vation in N.D.; Moldova; and Uganda.

Prayer Shawl Ministry: 11 Baby Sweaters were taken to St. Francis NICU since UMCOR didn't need them this year. Four graduates were presented blankets embroi-dered with Church logo. One couple was gifted a Wed-ding Prayer Shawl on their special day. Four baby blan-kets, 10 Shawls and 7 Quilts were taken to people in times of either joy or sorrow.

Preschool News

Another wonderful year of preschool has come to an end. The 'year of construction' is almost over and we are so thankful to all who helped the year go smoothly for our little ones and their families. August starts preparations all over as we look forward to Year #30. Some classes are full for the fall but we do have openings in our 3's classes and some spaces in our Pre K classes. If you or someone you know is interested in preschool, please encourage them to email us at [email protected] as soon as possible. We want to have teachers in place for September to welcome all who come our way. Summer Fun Camps were exactly that-FUN! Super-hero Camp in July was filled with laughing, happy children eager to see their friends turn into amazing Superheroes. We are so thankful to Sandra Lowe and Cindy Harris of Wear a Smile, Share a Smile, Inc. for donations that al-

lowed children to attend camp who might not otherwise have had the opportunity. We are sad to say 'good-by' to Julie Layman who has been the lead teacher for our 3's for the past 3 years. It has been a blessing for the children, their families and the preschool staff to have Miss Julie as a teacher, men-tor and friend. Happily, we will continue to look forward to seeing her at Chapel Time and as a substitute teacher during the coming year.

Trustee Report/New Key Policy

The building construction

is coming to an end

soon. The church coun-

cil, along with the trus-

tees, have determined

that the locks on all the

outside doors (new &

existing) will be changed

to improve the security

of the building (we now just have one building). If you

need a key to gain entry to the building once the new

locks are installed, please see Sandra and ask to com-

plete a new "Key Request Form". You will then be noti-

fied once your request is approved by the trustees and a

key will be issued per the new "Key Policy" and regis-

tered in the new “Key Log". The existing keys will still be

used for the doors inside of the building. Please contact

Terry Paquette, Trustee Chair if you have any questions.

PUMC has an automatic electronic giving option. This debits your checking/savings account weekly or monthly and deposit those funds directly into the church's bank account. No check to write. You specify the amount and you may change the amount whenev-er you wish. This electronic giving option would also automatically add your donation directly to your church giving statement! If you are interested in this option, give Brenda Butterfield a call.
