Since 1929, back when Tom Higley converted theold City Morgue into a burger joint and gin mill,Tom's has been a Phoenix favorite.
The place was packed with all kinds of big shotslike Governors, Senators, Judges, Lawyers andvarious and sundry captains of industry.
The main attraction was not the food, but a smalldoor leading into a darkened, smoke-filled room,smelling of bourbon, pool cue chalk and stalecigarettes, and housing pool tables. These eightpool tables were where local politicians, judges,attorneys and townsfolk could rack em up.
According to Leroy,who worked atToms from l943-l977,More caseswere decided atToms than in thecourthouse.
Toms even oncefielded anationalchampionsoftball team.But Tom's wasbest knownfor the pool
hall and bookmakingbusiness in the back.
By 1977 urban sprawl was allaround, commuting was popular andcompetition tripled, cutting into Tomsrestaurant trade. However, businesswasnt all that was declining, the oldmorgue was decaying, the roof leaked,wallpaper was peeling and the buildingwas ready to retire. The originalToms was torn down to make roomfor progress.
As downtown experienced a rebirth inthe late 1980s, Toms was reborn. Theyear l988 unveiled the new TomsTavern at One Renaissance Square,about a block and a half from theoriginal hang-out, keeping the burger,
chili, spaghetti redand (almost)everything that Toms
was famous for.
City council memberstalk politics, lawyersstill meet with theirclients, the senate
breaks for lunch, andjust about anythingcan happen. A specialgovernors corner can
be found in the frontwhere youll find areserved sign on a
table for four.President Bush andhis wife Laura had lunchthere with Governor Hull during a campaignvisit to Phoenix.
Toms Tavern truly carries on the tradition ofPhoenix old and new.
Stillits kinda too bad about the bookie joint.
