The last couple of months sure have felt quite long for most of us, and even though summer is yet to start, we know we haven't been the only ones to dream of our hearty dishes of November at times. Perhaps it's the extended amount of time spent with family, or maybe it's the increased need to feel comforted these days. No matter the reason, we were thrilled to learn that June is Turkey Lovers Month because now we have a timely opportunity to indulge in this unforgettable turkey breast recipe. Feeling thankful yet? You will!

1 cup refrigerated pomegranate juice 1/2 cup honey 2 tbsps red wine vinegar 1 1/2 tsps black pepper, divided 1 (12-oz.) pkg. cubed butternut squash

1 tbsp chopped fresh thyme 1/4 cup olive oil, divided 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt, divided 1 (1 1/2-lb.) boneless, skin-on turkey breast 1/2 cup pomegranate arils 2 tbsps chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley

- Preheat oven to 400°F. Bring juice, honey, and vinegar to a boil in a small saucepan over high, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat to medium and simmer for 12 to 15 mins. Remove from heat. Stir in 1/2 tsp of the pepper.- Mix squash, thyme, 2 tbsps of the olive oil, and 1/2 tsp each of the salt and pepper on a baking sheet; spread in an even layer. Roast until caramelized, about 20 mins.

- Meanwhile, heat the remaining 2 tbsps of oil in a large ovenproof skillet over medium. Sprinkle turkey with the remaining teaspoon of salt and 1/2 tsp of pepper. Place turkey skin side down in the skillet. Cook until golden brown, 8 to 10 mins. Turn turkey breast, and transfer skillet to oven. Roast at 400°F for 10 minutes. Brush turkey with 2 tbsps of the pomegranate mixture and continue to roast until a thermometer inserted in the thickest portion of turkey registers 160°F, 10 to 15 mins. Brush turkey every 2 mins with the pomegranate mixture. Remove from oven, and let stand 10 min.- Transfer squash to a platter. Slice turkey across the grain, and place it with the squash. Serve with remaining pomegranate glaze. Sprinkle with pomegranate arilsand parsley.

At the Children’s Museum, kids used to climb over one another in an enormous anthill maze. Inside this story-and-a-half of carpeted, encaged wire mesh, layers of looping and overlapping low tunnels would typically reveal anywhere from two to four wailing toddlers stuck in its dead center, at any given time. Eventually, while a crowd of parents politely held back giggles, the mom or dad of one of the stuck babies would valiantly begin belly-crawling his or her way upward, hissing with as much mustered sweetness as possible: ‘Come down, sweetie.’

In his book The Anthropology of Childhood: Cherubs, Chattel, Changelings (2008), the anthropologist David Lancy introduced the idea of the neontocracy: a type of society, unique to Western, educated, industrialized, and democratic countries, in which children are the center of, well, everything. In a neontocracy, the living room surrenders to the supremacy of toys; weekends are devoted to the sensorial overload of primary colors at kid spaces, and there is no upper limit on the amount of time and energy adults must pour into the exclusive project of childhood. We seem to fit right in.

Times have changed, however. As we have not witnessed that Children’s Museum scene for months, many parents are not necessarily looking forward to resuming that particular experience. Talking to a local young father recently, we asked how much he had missed being able to visit some of our local indoor playgrounds - to let the kids let loose, you know? We were surprised to learn that he was excited to simply be able to attend a childless friend’s dinner party - and, this time, bring his two children along.

We’re not trying to romanticize one man’s insight, and it’s certainly not

our intention to alienate

parents who actually enjoy living their own neontocracy, truly. However, we can’t help but wonder, Have parents been so immersed in kid culture, that they have felt lonely and exiled from adult culture, even before the global pandemic? Perhaps. If so, this exact moment in time may just be the ideal opportunity to change that.

On a broad scale, going from severe social distancing to now distant socialization

has awakened a new yearning for a larger sense of community, where human beings of all ages and

groups are eager to simply co-exist. Be it while sidewalk chalking or discussing our economic downfall or dancing in a tutu or

reading poetry.

Since putting much effort into rebuilding our public normalcy is now everyone’s new normal, and we’re already being forced to make several behavioral changes, it makes perfect sense to offer fathers and grandfathers in our community the gift of real inclusion this Father’s Day. Here are some

habit-forming actions that we can encourage today:

1 Taking the kids to a relaxed get-together that isn’t age-exclusive.

Don’t overthink it, don’t over-coach the children -

just let it flow.

2 Reorganizing the home’s living space so everyone can enjoy common areas

together, including possible guests. That’s not only about cleaning up!

We’ve heard of a young dad who had a sturdy wooden swing installed in his

living room to create a kid and adult-friendly play area. Needless to say, he had

more than enough space to make that possible. Try an area for plane models and puzzles, if you don’t.

3 Introducing children to non-children-focused cultural spots. Make it entertaining for them to learn about art and history by explaining in simple terms.

4 Making a playlist that mixes tunes from “your time” and theirs, and dancing/

singing to both with them at home. This will allow them to build familiarity and appreciation for parts of “your world” while out andabout with you.

5 If you play an instrument, bringing that into their world with “your songs” and “their songs” is a great idea, as well. Who knows? You might want to take them to your favorite band’s concert one day.

6 This is a big one: learn to travel light, and once it is safe to do so again, take your kids to distant places you’d like to go yourself.They may surprise you!

We hope our local dads feel invigorated to get up and help create a new, more inclusive culture where they’re not subjugated to the singular, quasi-sacred project of the kid, nor trying to flee it. They're simply adult and child, making their way through the world. We're ready to support that!

As insurance agents, we are constantly encouraging fathers, commonly charged with protecting their families, to focus on safeguarding financial health for their future. This June 21st, we are urging them to turn their attention to the journey they are already on today. The time to make meaningful changes and enjoy the ride is NOW. The place is here, there, everywhere.

Remember when your father taught you how to ride a bike? Perhaps that was your mother or sibling, or you may not remember who actually held the seat as you

finally broke free. That’s precisely our point. Because even after

decades without riding, you may not be so sure of who pushed you forward the first time you did it, but once you hop on, it’s as if you never stopped pedaling. “How can that be?” you ask.

As it turns out, our long-term memory is divided into two types: declarative and procedural.

Declarative memory is mainly the portion of the brain that keeps track of “what is what”. It helps you recall certain episodes, such as the day you switched to the best insurance agency in town (yes, us), as well as factual knowledge - remembering that carrying auto insurance is the law, for instance. These two types of declarative memory content have one thing in common:

you are aware of the knowledge and can communicate the memories to others.

On the other hand, skills such as riding a bicycle and driving a stick shift, are anchored in a separate system, which comprehends “how and what,” called procedural memory. As its name implies, this type of memory records the actions involved in the process of operating objects and tools, as well as the movements of the body required to perform specific tasks. Because it is processed at the level of unconsciousness, the content of procedural memory becomes instinctive knowledge, which is intuitively applied to life - and not necessarily communicated to others. You "just do it."

Many scientific experiments have therefore concluded that once internalized, simple sequences of movements are typically preserved for a lifetime, surviving most episodes of memory loss and trauma. Want to make a lasting memory? Better get moving!
