FROM THE EDITORS DESK….
Christmas 2017
I start this newsletter with a heavy heart and dedicate this issue to my Mum, Annette Schist. Mum passed away on 11 November after a huge battle with cancer. Mum was a long time supporter of the Society and has attended the last 15 Christmas parties (at least), she probably buttered thousands of pieces of bread for us and always supported every fundrais-ing event, either by donating funds, products or children’s toys. I will miss her so much, a beautiful lady now at rest.
We are finally back in the office and I can now see my dining room table! Viv has gone to check on her Dad in the UK and won’t be back until after Christmas, but please do not hesitate to contact the office if you need to, I will be here right up until Christmas. The office will be officially closed (but you may see Viv around the hospital sometime) until Monday 15th January 2018.
The annual Christmas Party was another fabulous day! Thank you to everyone who came along, volunteered on the day, donated produce or goods for the chocolate wheel and raffle, and helped in the lead up to this event. This photo is of some of my lovely family who turn up to help every year.
Take care everyone, wishing you all a very special Christmas and New Year.
Mark Friday 13th April in your diaries for our next Ethel and Bethel Bingo Evening! Jo x

Situations Vacant In 2018 the Society will be fundraising to continue our patient support
programmes and we are pencilled in for an Ethel and Bethel Bingo
Night on Friday 13th April 2018 (which is not scary at all—just
exciting!). This is going to be a completely “Do it yourself” night, in
that we will operate the bar, provide the catering, set up and pack
down the venue, plus cleaning after the event. This event will be
bigger than before and we need to sell 180 tickets to make it work,
can you help?
If you are available to help in any way, or provide a raffle prize, please
contact Jo via email - [email protected].
If you would like to put your name down for tickets in advance, please
also let me know. I will end this with a common phase for 2017…
“Let’s do this”!

MEET STELLA
& MAGGIE
Hi everyone,
My name is Stella Grigg. I am the Administrator in the Home Dialysis Training Centre, which is based at the Christchurch Hospital.
I moved to Christchurch from the West Coast 5 months ago with my young daughter.
My previous experience is working as a Receptionist at a Medical Centre and rest home/hospital care facilities. I enjoy baking, trail walk-ing, gardening and Zumba in my spare time.
*******************************
Hi my name is Maggie Lee. I transferred to Christchurch from Waikato Hospital in September, where I was working in the Dialysis in centre and Acute Dialysis Unit. Prior to this I spent 9 years working overseas on the East and West Coasts of Australia and Saudi Arabia.
I have worked in Renal for 15 years, 5 years in Renal wards and
10 years in various Dialysis units.
Page 7 The Renal Messenger Christmas 2017
Hello, my name is Marcie. I have worked in Ward 14 for the past five and a half years, and have recently joined the Dialysis team for six months before heading back to the Ward. I am really enjoying learning haemodialysis and getting to know the Nephrology outpatients better!
I studied here in Christchurch before briefly moving to Timaru for my New Graduate year, then starting in Ward 14, which is where my passion for Nephrology started!
Before nursing, I was an administrator, receptionist, a caregiver at a Rest Home, and also a dairy farmer at one point. I love nursing because I love helping people, and interacting with patients and family.
***************
MEET
MARCIE
The Executive Committee, Jo and Viv welcome all new staff
to the Home Dialysis Team and sadly say goodbye to some.
We always feel very privileged to assist this team where
we can in the care of our patients and members.

VIV’S UPDATE PEDDLERS
We still have some peddlers at the
office, they can be used for leg and
arm exercise – all done in the
comfort of your own home! You just
need to get one form filled out by
your doctor to make sure you are
medically safe to use a peddler.
Contact the office if you would like to
have a go; come and join the CKS
cycling team!
WRISTBANDS AND FISTULA COVERS
We now have these available at the office. The wristbands are ‘one
size fits all’ and have the words—NO BP NO NEEDLES THIS ARM -
printed on them. The covers are of various lengths and widths, as
well as colours. I will carry some in my bag when visiting HDTC and the
hospital on Fridays (back after Christmas). Pop into the office or call us
for more details. Some of you picked up some from the Christmas
Party – we’d love to hear how you go with them. Any comments most
welcome! If you can spare a coin when you get one that would be
great but not compulsory.

KHNZ have asked us to share the following with our members, as the MOH are wanting as many responses as
possible:
NATIONAL TRAVEL ASSISTANCE (NTA) SCHEME
Survey for patients and support people
UPDATE: 12 December 2017
We’ve had a great response to the surveys but would like more!
Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to complete the survey, particularly those who have sent in hard copies. Please encourage people to go to the survey link, or print a copy if they have a view to contribute.
Our survey and Leadership Group clearly tell us that the NTA Scheme is highly valued by users, at a time when they are likely to be under significant stress. We need to do more thinking about making the process for registering and claiming easier, and whether the Scheme is focusing on those people with the highest needs getting to treatment.
