Accreditation and CEUs The University of South Florida Office of Continuing Professional Development is continually updating its providerships with various organizations. Please check the website for new CEU opportunities.

General CEUs A continuing education unit (CEU) is defined as 10 contact hours of participation in an organized continuing education experience under responsible sponsorship, capable direction and qualified instruction. CEUs provide a measure of educational achievement, and are widely recognized by employers, industry, professional associations, and certification and licensing agencies as evidence of education progress. Participants who successfully complete programs that qualify for Continuing Education Units will receive CEUs according to this scale.

American Board of Industrial Hygiene The American Board of Industrial Hygiene offers “Certification Maintenance” points for specific courses, which have been registered by the University of South Florida Office of Continuing Professional Development.

Board of Certified Safety Professionals The Board of Certified Safety Professionals offers “Continuance of Certification” points and it is the responsibility of the student to calculate the hours. For every CEU (10 contact hours), one COC is awarded.

Who We Are

The USF OSHA Training Institute (OTI) Education Center is headquartered in Wesley Chapel, Fla., just north of beautiful Tampa Bay. As part of OSHA Region IV—comprised of the following states: Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee—we serve the Southeast and beyond to support the overall mission of reducing workplace accidents and injuries by training workers, employers and safety professionals on hazard recognition and avoidance. Since its inception in 2003, more than 6,300 adults have received safety and health training from the USF OTI Education Center in a classroom setting and more than 7,400 students have attended its online courses. Our professional instructors have more than 300 years of combined experience

in training adults and their jobsite safety experience spans the construction, maritime and other industries. The OSHA Training Institute (OTI) Education Centers are a national network of non-profit organizations authorized by OSHA to deliver occupational safety and health training to public and private sector workers, supervisors, and employers on behalf of OSHA. Regardless of your educational background, the USF Certificate Programs provide both experienced and newer safety

professionals important workplace knowledge and practical experience regarding safety and safety standards.

Participants will enjoy a fulfilling learning experience and gain the skills necessary to create solutions for workplace

safety challenges.

Is there a set schedule of courses for certificate programs?

No. Any course listed on the USF OTI Education Center website or course brochure is applied towards the certificate.

I already have a bachelor’s degree and I am employed. Would a certificate program benefit me?

Yes. Certificate programs offer concentrated study in areas directly applicable to many jobs and can add depth to existing

knowledge and skills. Completion of a certificate program can help you make the transition to a new career.

How will I benefit from this certificate?

You will become aware of government agencies that affect your industry. You will learn to communicate safety and health

problems to your team to in order to reduce injuries and health problems in your workplace. We will help you get started on

developing an effective safety program.

What is the cost of the courses for the certificate?

There is a Course Fee: $150 non-refundable fee to enroll in the USF OTI Education Center Certificate Programs. For individual

course fees, see the details on our website at www.usfoticenter.org. Each course is paid for at the time of enrollment.

Can I take courses without being enrolled in the certificate program?

Yes. The certificate program consists of courses from our regular curriculum, so some students work toward a certificate while

others do not. From the date of your application for the certificate program, you have three years to complete the

required coursework.

Can I pursue more than one certificate program at the same time?

Yes, as long as requirements for all certificates are met.

In what order should I take the courses after finishing the fundamental OSHA courses?

There is no required order to the coursework. Once you have completed the prerequisite courses listed previously you can take

any course in your area of interest.

If I have already taken a certificate-required course, does it apply?

If you have previously taken a required or elective course at another OTI Education Center it may be applied towards the

“Public Sector Safety & Health Fundamentals Certificate Program.

Do I have to take all courses through the University of South Florida OTI Education Center?

You may transfer up to three courses from any other OTI Education Center that can be applied towards the PCG, PCC, or the

PCM Certificate Programs.

How long do I have to complete the certificate?

From the date of your application for the certificate program, you have three years to complete the required coursework.

Do I get college credit for any of these courses?

The University of South Florida does not yet offer university credit for these courses. However, several colleges nationwide do

apply some of these courses towards an undergraduate degree. Check with individual colleges or universities.

General CEUs: 2.5 Course Fee: $800

OTI 500 - Trainer Course in OSHA Standards for Construction

Course Descriptions and Schedules

This course is designed for individuals interested in

teaching the 10- and 30-hour construction safety and

health Outreach Training Program to their employees and

other interested groups. Using OSHA Construction

Standards as a guide, special emphasis is placed on those

topics required in the 10- and 30-hour programs as well as

those which are most hazardous. Students are briefed on

effective instructional approaches and use of visual aids

and handouts. This course allows the student to become a

trainer in the OSHA Outreach Training Program, to conduct

both 10- and 30-hour Construction Outreach classes, and

to issue cards to participants after verifying course

completion. Students who wish to participate as authorized

Outreach trainers in the OSHA Outreach Training Program

must prepare a presentation on an assigned OSHA

Construction Outreach Training Program topic individually

or as part of a group and successfully pass a written exam

at the end of the course.

Minimum student contact hours: 26

OSHA’s 29 CFR 1926 Construction Industry Standard will be

provided for an additional fee.

Prerequisites: Five years relevant experience in the

construction safety and health field and completion of the

OTI 510 course (pg. 16). Prerequisite form is available

health Outreach training program to their employees and

other interested groups. Using the OSHA General

Industry Standards as a guide, special emphasis is placed

on those topics required in the 10- and 30-hour programs

as well as those which are most hazardous. Students are

briefed on effective instructional approaches and use of

visual aids and handouts. This course allows the student

to become a trainer in the OSHA Outreach Training

Program, to conduct both 10- and 30-hour General

Industry Outreach classes, and to issue cards to

participants after verifying course completion. Students

who wish to participate as authorized trainers in the

OSHA Outreach Training Program must prepare a

presentation on an assigned OSHA General Industry

Outreach Training Program topic individually or as part of

a group and successfully pass a written exam at the end

of the course. Minimum student contact hours: 26

machinery, machine safe guards, and related OSHA

regulations and procedures. Guidance is provided on

the hazards associated with various types of machinery

and the determination of proper machine safe guards.

Course topics include machinery processes, mechanical

This course prepares experienced Outreach Training

Program trainers to present OSHA #7600 Disaster Site

Worker Course, intended for second responders (those

arriving hours or days after the event). Course topics

include the National Response Framework, the Incident

Command System, disaster work zone safety, respiratory

protection, communication issues, applying elements of

successful adult training programs, and knowledge, skills,

and attitudes to awareness training about safety and

health standards at natural and human-made disaster sites.

Students are provided the opportunity to practice

knowledge and skills through discussion, planned

plans and training materials for the OSHA #7600 Disaster

Site Worker Course are provided. Students who wish to

participate as authorized Disaster Site Worker trainers must

in the Disaster Site Worker Outreach Training Program, to
