John Erik Hagen, Regional Director
Norwegian Coastal AdministrationIndonesia 26 September 2016
SESAME Straits - objectives
26.09. Page 3
The primary objective is to develop and validate shared situational
awareness and cooperative decision making between ship's bridge team and
shore based Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) personnel.
Secondary objectives are:
• Just In Time arrival within a Regional Maritime Service Portfolio
• Use existing systems/equipment as far as possible
SESAME Straits - Secure, Efficient and SAfe maritime traffic ManagEment in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore

The current status of the SESAME
Straits Project • Work Package 1 – Monitoring and Control Strategy
This work package is concluded.
• Work Package 2 – Analysis of Decision-Making Process
Focus on the simulator testing that will be conducted in Q4 2016 and Q1 2017. This simulator testing will focus on how the availability of an optimized route affects decision making, as well as safety of navigation.
• Work Package 3 – System Design
System Design is concluded.
• Work Package 4 – Data Collection and Preparation
This work package is concluded.

Status….
• Work Package 5 – Simulator Development
KNC, Marintek, and SimPlus continue bi-weekly teleconferences to finalize integration testing.
Currently, the ECDIS, Straits Traffic Management System (STM), and Ship Traffic Simulator (STS) can share information with each other.
The STM system can receive a route from the ECDIS and send the route to the STS. Once the STS has performed its calculations and optimized the route, the result can be displayed on the STM system, which can then forward the optimized route to the ECDIS.
Integration testing is in progress

Status…..
• Work Package 6 – Cooperative Decision Support
Work is ongoing to not only visualize hot spots but also provide suggested actions to reduce risk to navigation, ie. reduce speed to x knots.
• Work Package 7 – Ship Shore Communication
The first prototype VDES transponder is scheduled to be ready by October.
• Work Package 8 – Upgraded Planning Station
Work is ongoing with finalizing communications.
• Work Package 9 – Demonstration and Dissemination
The SESAME Straits project presented two papers at the 2016 e-Navigation Underway International conference, as well as the Innovation e-nav.no conference.
