What we need

Infrastructure gets in the way of a

smooth operation… we need ATM to

be invisible and seamless

Seamless: Smooth and continuous with no

apparent gaps or spaces between one part and

the next

Page 42: SESAR ANNUAL GATHERING · Delivering best-in-class, globally interoperable and high-performing Air Transport for Airspace Users and Citizens •Enabling the delivery of safe, cost-efficient

www.eraa.org

twitter.com/eraaorg

What we need

Development and deployment of ATM technology that allows operators to:

• Do what we want

• When we want

• With the least possible effort

• And at the lowest possible cost

Page 43: SESAR ANNUAL GATHERING · Delivering best-in-class, globally interoperable and high-performing Air Transport for Airspace Users and Citizens •Enabling the delivery of safe, cost-efficient

www.eraa.org

twitter.com/eraaorg

What we need

• Define a clear set of objectives for performance improvement

• Ensure the outputs meet these performance objectives

• Ensure the outputs are performance driven, not technology driven

• Undertake detailed CBAs for each deliverable

• Recognise that one size does not fit all

• Recognise that funding/investment is a major obstacle

• Ensure seamless coordination from development to deployment

Page 44: SESAR ANNUAL GATHERING · Delivering best-in-class, globally interoperable and high-performing Air Transport for Airspace Users and Citizens •Enabling the delivery of safe, cost-efficient

My point is…

• You all understand what SESAR is

• Policymakers and regulators understand what

SESAR is

• ANSPs understand what SESAR is

• Manufacturers understand what SESAR is

Not all airlines understand what SESAR is

Page 48: SESAR ANNUAL GATHERING · Delivering best-in-class, globally interoperable and high-performing Air Transport for Airspace Users and Citizens •Enabling the delivery of safe, cost-efficient

My point is…

Communicating to the wider airline community

what SESAR is, why it is important and how it

will benefit them is a critical part of the project’s

acceptance and success

Conclusions

• Clearly define the objectives of SESAR

• Deliver to those objectives

• Coordinate with the Deployment Manager

• Recognise that one size does not fit all

• Focus on communicating what SESAR is

What is initial 4D? Operational Concept

• Share and synchronize ground and airborne trajectory → EPP (Extended Projected Profile).

• “Flying to Time constraints” to optimize sequences as defined by ATC.

March 2015

4D trajectory = computed 3D trajectory + times estimates considering route, altitude and time constraints (CTA)

Current status and associated results & benefits

• Flight trials in MUAC and NORACON airspace– Two flights: Toulouse (LFBO) to Stockholm (ESSA) via Copenhagen

(EKCH) and the corresponding return flight via EKCH as well.

– Airbus A320-200 test aircraft equipped with current SESAR FMS, EIS and ATSU prototypes

• Conclusions– The use of airborne calculated 4D trajectory has proven to be helpful

and appreciated by both pilots and ATC

– i4D operational procedures from cockpit point of view were successfully used during the flight trial

– The flight crew performed successfully all tasks in nominal situation with no negative remarks or observations regarding the workload.

– 6 CTAs have been instructed and met within the required accuracy of ±10s

Promising results!

Page 97: SESAR ANNUAL GATHERING · Delivering best-in-class, globally interoperable and high-performing Air Transport for Airspace Users and Citizens •Enabling the delivery of safe, cost-efficient

Current status and associated results & benefits

• SESAR 1 results and benefits:– Increase of ATC awareness, predictability and safety with EPP downlink.

– Significant reduction in ATCO workload with high level of CPDLC usage.

– Decrease of pilots workload (by reducing the number of lateral / vertical deviations due to conflicts avoidance / solving).

– Average reduction of fuel used per flight is 1.58% (when all aircraft are flying according to a CTA, avoiding path stretching or holding).

Overall i4D function validated and operationally accepted on-board.

i4D concept validated in En-Route medium density / medium complexity

• Remain-to-do in SESAR 1:– To close i4D/CTA concept validation in TMA medium density / medium

complexity environment (EXE-477 in progress with NORACON / Thales ATM)

– To investigate EPP usage in ground systems using actual EPP data (PEGASE -Providing Effective Ground & Air data Sharing via EPP)

March 2015World ATM Congress97

Page 98: SESAR ANNUAL GATHERING · Delivering best-in-class, globally interoperable and high-performing Air Transport for Airspace Users and Citizens •Enabling the delivery of safe, cost-efficient

Overall i4D strategy for SESAR 2020

1. Demonstrate i4D concept wide scale through VLDs using revenue aircraft / airborne systems “proof of concept” certified

2. Mature a number of concepts using EPP to enhance ATM operations / ground systems (high density / high complexity environment, i4D/CTA in climb, …)

3. Develop cooperation with all relevant actors on the way towards deployment
