SOCIAL

• Facebook has more number of users than the population of China or India

• More than 25% of the population uses social media for connection & collaboration

• In emerging economies, growth of social media is more than 100%

• Social media is touching the lives of people, unlike any other media/ medium of the past.

• It has transformed the way people communicate and interact with each other.

ANALYTICS

• In today’s digitally connected world, there is data everywhere - information overload

• Is this data really useful? – Does it help in any business functions or decision making?

• Analytics makes extensive use of mathematics and statistics to convert raw data into a meaningful data which can augment the decision making process

• It is the conversion of data -> Insights

Page 26: Session 1 Digital Technologies & SMAC · Nokia India Pvt. Ltd (2008 – 2010) – Technical Account Manager (Middle East & Africa) – CDMA CMIE – Center for Monitoring Indian Economy

BIG DATA

• Big data is a term for data sets that are so large or complex that traditional data processing applications are inadequate. The term often refers simply to the use of advanced methods to extract value from data, and seldom to a particular size of data set.

• Characteristics of Big Data (3 V’s by Gartner) • Volume

• Velocity

• Variety

CLOUD

• Pay Per Use Model –

Using applications as a service (rental basis) and user is charged based on usage

• IaaS – Infrastructure as a Service • PaaS - Platform as a Service • SaaS - Software as a Service

• Types of Cloud • Public Cloud • Private Cloud • Hybrid Cloud

• Amazing Cost Advantages

SMAC – Putting it all together!!!

Why is a good understanding of SMAC essential for understanding IoT?

• Example 1 - Nike Shoes

• Example 2 - Temperature Monitoring & Control

The Digital Technologies

Page 32: Session 1 Digital Technologies & SMAC · Nokia India Pvt. Ltd (2008 – 2010) – Technical Account Manager (Middle East & Africa) – CDMA CMIE – Center for Monitoring Indian Economy

MACHINE LEARNING/ COGNITIVE

• Type of artificial intelligence that provides computers with the ability to learn without being explicitly programmed.

• Development of computer programs that can teach themselves to grow and change when exposed to new data.

• Uses data to detect patterns in data and adjust program actions accordingly.

• Facebook's News Feed uses machine learning to personalize each member's feed, Amazon’s Recommended Products engine

Page 33: Session 1 Digital Technologies & SMAC · Nokia India Pvt. Ltd (2008 – 2010) – Technical Account Manager (Middle East & Africa) – CDMA CMIE – Center for Monitoring Indian Economy

AUGMENTED REALITY

• Augmented reality (AR) is a live direct or indirect view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented (or supplemented) by computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data.

• With the help of advanced AR technology the information about the surrounding real world of the user becomes interactive and digitally manipulative. Information about the environment and its objects is overlaid on the real world.

• Video

Page 34: Session 1 Digital Technologies & SMAC · Nokia India Pvt. Ltd (2008 – 2010) – Technical Account Manager (Middle East & Africa) – CDMA CMIE – Center for Monitoring Indian Economy

VIRTUAL REALITY

• Virtual reality or virtual realities (VR), also known as immersive multimedia or computer-simulated reality, is a computer technology that replicates an environment, real or imagined, and simulates a user's physical presence and environment to allow for user interaction. (Ex – flight simulations)

• Virtual realities artificially create sensory experience, which can include sight, touch, hearing, and smell.

• Video

AUTOMATION/ ROBOTICS

• Automation is the use of various control systems for operating equipment such as machinery, processes in factories, boilers, heat treating ovens and other applications with minimal or reduced human intervention. Some processes have been completely automated.

• The biggest benefit of automation is that it saves labor; however, it is also used to save energy and materials and to improve quality, accuracy and precision.

• Robotics deals with the design, construction, operation, and application of robots - computer systems for their control, sensory feedback and information processing.

• These technologies deal with automated machines (robots for short) that can take the place of humans in dangerous environments or manufacturing processes, or resemble humans in appearance, behaviour, and or cognition.

• RPA - Robotic Process Automation

• Example – Insurance Industry for client profiling

Page 36: Session 1 Digital Technologies & SMAC · Nokia India Pvt. Ltd (2008 – 2010) – Technical Account Manager (Middle East & Africa) – CDMA CMIE – Center for Monitoring Indian Economy

3D PRINTING

• 3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing (AM), refers to various processes used to synthesize a 3Dimensional object. In 3D printing, successive layers of material are formed under computer control to create an object. These objects can be of almost any shape or geometry.

• A 3D printer is a type of an industrial robot. Large 3D printers have been developed for industrial, education, and demonstrative uses
