Session 1494: IBM Tivoli Storage FlashCopy Manager
This presentation covers IBM Tivoli Storage FlashCopy Manager on Windows*.
It discusses snapshot technology and Microsoft VSS at a high-level, examines how snapshots and VSS are used within IBM Tivoli Storage FlashCopy Manager, and concludes with how Chesapeake Energy plans to use FlashCopy Manager to protect their Microsoft Exchange environment.
*Note: IBM Tivoli Storage FlashCopy Manager is supported on Windows, AIX, Solaris, and Linux platforms however this presentation only covers the Windows support.

• Questions and Answers
Snapshots
5
Challenges for Protecting Vital Data• Application availability
– 24x7availability of revenue generating applications– zero application downtime is expected– shrinking backup window– recoveries must be quick
• Increasing volume of database content – complex database management– backup window no longer adequate
• Loss of vital business data because of– hardware errors– logical errors (virus, bugs, user errors, etc.)– disaster
6
What is a Snapshot?
• A point in time copy of a defined collection of data
(Source: www.snia.org/dictionary)
7
Snapshots – Usage and Types
• Why are snapshots useful for backup?– Very fast, non-disruptive backups– Faster recovery time (RTO)– Easier to realize more recovery points (RPO)– Minimal or no down-time of applications
• What types of snapshots are there?– Split-Mirror– Copy on Write– Redirect on Write– Others
8
What You Want from an Application Snapshot Product• Application integration
– Applications know where their data is stored and how to put the data into a consistent state
• Zero-impact backups– Backup process should not affect (or minimally affect) production activity– Data movement optionally off-loaded from the production hosts
• Instant recovery
• Unattended backup of database
• Federated backup and restore
• Easy to install, configure, and use
9
What You Want from an Application Snapshot Product
• Optimized back up and recovery by exploiting hardware function
• Support for managing multiple back-up versions
• Automatic policy-based management of backups
• Single point of control for back up and restore operations
• Integrated interfaces for configuration and operations
• Scalable to support multiple hosts
• Wide support of storage subsystems
Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS)
11
What is VSS?
• VSS = Volume Shadow Copy Service
– Framework on Microsoft Windows to enable volume backups while applications continue to write to the volumes
– Federated, application-integrated, storage-integrated operations
– VSS requestors, VSS writers, and VSS providers communicate to create and restore volume shadow copies
– A shadow copy (“snapshot”) of a volume logically duplicates all the data held on that volume at one well-defined instant in time
12
VSS Roles• Requestors
– An application that “requests” that a volume shadow copy be taken– Example: A backup application, like TSM or FCM
• Writers– An application or service that stores persistent information on disk– Examples: SQL Server or Exchange Server
• Providers– A component that manages running volumes and creates shadow
copies of them on demand– Three (3) types of providers: System, Software, Hardware– Example: Disk System, such as SVC, NetApp, EMC, DS8000– Microsoft delivers VSS ‘System Provider’ as part of the operating
system

VSS Shadow Copy – A Logical View
Source
Volume
Target
Volume
(Shadow Copy or Snapshot)
The shadow copy is logically an exact copy of the source volume at the time of the snapshot.
Contains the data to be shadow copied. These volumes contain the application data.
Read only!
15
VSS Shadow Copy - Terminology
Persistent
Shadow copy that remains after the backup application
completes its operations. This type of shadow copy also survives system reboots
Non-Persistent
Temporary shadow copy that remains only as long as the
backup application needs it in order to copy the data to its
backup repository
Imported
A shadow copy that is visible to a specific host. A shadow copy can only be “imported” by one host at
any given time.
Transportable
A shadow copy that can be accessed by other hosts on the
SAN. “Transportability” is a feature of VSS hardware providers
IBM Tivoli Storage FlashCopy Manager (FCM)
17
IBM Tivoli Storage FlashCopy Manager on Windows
• Leverages latest snapshot technology
• Utilizes Microsoft’s VSS architecture
• Supports snapshots of Microsoft Exchange Server and Microsoft SQL Server
• Can operate standalone or integrated with Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM)
18
FlashCopy Manager - Functional Objectives• Fast Backups - Perform on-line backups using snapshot technology
• Fast Recovery - Perform very fast restores from snapshot backups
• Automatic Policy Management – User defined policy to automatically manage snapshots and disk space
• Easy to Install, Configure, and Use – Installation, configuration, and usage is easy, Windows MMC integration– We've reduced TTV to under 1 hour!
• Optional Integration with TSM Server – Standalone operation or seamless integration with a TSM Server
• Off-loaded Backups – Ability to optionally off-load the backup of data to the TSM Server to another machine

FlashCopy Manager On Windows• Snapshot backups can be:
– Stored on local disk– Stored on a TSM Server– Both
• Snapshot backups are automatically managed through user-defined policy
• Data movement to a TSM Server can be off-loaded to a secondary machine
• Restore options for snapshot backups:– VSS Restore - Restore from TSM Server storage– VSS Fast Restore - Restore via file-level copy from mounted
snapshot• Enhanced function for XIV, SVC, DS8*, and Storwize
v7000– VSS Instant Restore – Restore via volume-level copy from
snapshot
22
FlashCopy Manager On Windows• Leverages hardware snapshot capabilities
– When used in conjunction with disk system VSS Provider– Can exploit capabilities like space-efficient and incremental snapshots
• Support for both Hardware and Software VSS providers– Provider must strictly adhere to Microsoft VSS provider specs– Typically provided by the disk system vendor– Microsoft “in-box” VSS System Provider can also be used
• Supports standalone and clustered environments
• Supports virtual environments like VMWARE and Hyper-V– VSS Provider support must also be considered
• Supports Microsoft SQL Server
• Supports Microsoft Exchange Server
