". . . the arts have been an inseparable part of the human journey; indeed, we depend on the arts to carry us toward the fullness of our humanity. . . in any civilization - ours included - the arts are inseparable from the very meaning of the term 'education.' We know from long experience that no one can claim to be truly educated who lacks basic knowledge and skills in the arts."

–National Standards for Arts Education

How does this quote emphasize the meaning of the arts in culture and civilization?

How do we reframe our concept of culture and civilization for the 21st century?

• Different cultures exist within any given civilization.

• Each culture may express their distinctness in language, history, religion, story and the arts.

• Although each civilization uses fine arts, the expressions are distinct for each culture.
