Humbled. Inspired. Determined.

These are a few of the feelings that come to mind as I look back on all that we achieved at Akron Children’s Hospital in 2016.

I’m humbled by the trust our families place in our caregivers. For the first time, we provided more than 1 million outpatient visits. We admitted 9,654 patients to our hospitals and performed 16,897 surgeries. It’s a privilege to care for so many children and to know that our regional expansion means we can meet the needs of more families in more communities.

I’m inspired by the commitment of our hospital family. We invested in people, facilities and technology to further our mission. We recruited talented people to join our team, now numbering nearly 6,000 dedicated employees. We introduced new primary care offices and added specialty care services at locations across northern Ohio. We broke ground on major expansions on our Akron and Beeghly campuses. We also launched our strategic plan to strengthen and expand the scope of the Rebecca D. Considine Research Institute.

I’m determined to keep our three promises at the core of our mission. Those promises have stood the test of time. I’m proud that after 126 years, they remain at the heart of our culture and are the foundation for our family-centered approach to care.

“Go.” I can think of no better word to describe 2016.

The determination and generosity of our donors, staff, patients and communities generated tremendous movement for Akron Children’s Hospital.

We continued to expand our locations and service offerings – bringing high-quality care close to home. We broke ground on an $18.6 million expansion of our Beeghly campus in Boardman and opened the Celeste Myers Dental Clinic on the Akron campus, which has made an immediate impact and fulfilled an unmet community need.

With this growth came an astonishing jump in philanthropic support. Donors like you made $18.8 million in gifts and pledges to our hospital – a 22 percent increase from 2015. The Mahoning Valley community alone contributed $2.9 million to further our growth in the region.

2016 also marked a year of transition inside the Akron Children’s Hospital Foundation. We welcomed a number of new employees, including John LaGuardia, who was named the executive director. I want to thank the entire Foundation team for its enthusiasm and energy during this time of change. I am confident we have the best team in place to bring together community and hospital resources to further Akron Children’s mission. While the past year was one full of movement, we know you will assist us in taking even bigger strides in 2017.
