Topic: Set Apart for Gods Service

Be ye holy, for I am Holy 1st Peter 1:15-16, Leviticus 11:44-45

We use the word sanctification to describe the process of growing to become

more like Christ, and holy to describe the result ofthat process.

    Sanctification/Holiness in the Old Testament

    1. The Sabbath was holy because God set it apart for His people. [Exodus16:23]

    2. The priests were holy because they were set apart to minister to theLord. [Leviticus 21:7-8; Exodus 19:22]

    3. Their garments were holy and could not be duplicated for common use[Exodus 28:2].

    4. The tithe that the people brought was holy. Leviticus 27:30]5. The firstborn of both men and animals were sanctified to the Lord.

    [Exodus 13:2]

    6. Mt Sinai was sanctified [Exodus 19:23]7. The tabernacle and all its furniture were sanctified. [Exodus 40:9,

    29:43]

    Sanctification in the New Testament

    1. In the New Testament, sanctification is used primarily in regard topeople. However, Jesus said that the Temple sanctifies the gold on it and

that the altar sanctifies the gift on it. [Matthew 23:17-19]

    2. Paul taught that when we give thanks for our food, it is consecrated bythe word of God and prayer. [1stTimothy 4:5]

    3. Certain believers are sanctified. For the unbelieving husband issanctified by the wife [1stCorinthians 7:14]. This means that theunbelieving partner is set apart in a position of privilege by having a

Christian spouse praying for his/her salvation.

    4. Christ sanctified by all believers [1stPeter 3:15]. We sanctify the Lord bysetting Him apart as undisputed Sovereign in our lives.

    Types of Sanctification

There are three aspects of sanctification that should be noted: positional,

practical, and perfect. Positional sanctification means that the believer is

    once-and-for-all set apart for God (1 Cor. 1:2; 6:911; Heb. 10:10).

Practical sanctification is the process by which the believer daily becomes

    more like Christ (John 17:17; 2 Cor. 3:18; 7:1).

Perfect sanctification will be our experience when we see Christ in glory (1

John 3:2). One of the birthmarks of a true believer is a hatred for sin and a

desire to become more like Jesus Christ (1 John 2:29; 3:9; 5:45). We are

saved to become holy in Christ (Eph. 1:4; 5:27; Col. 1:22).

Practical applications to the life of the Believer

    Sanctification is.
