    Medium high quality. Pretty good condition overall.

    Not original edge finishes. Persian asymmetrical

    ornamenton dark blue field. Largest medallion (or

    central field, depending on how the design layout is

    read) is green. Good quality standard Persian rug for

    export. Size and proportion definitely for western

    French influence in flowers of central field. Blue-

    Commercial manufacture. Close ties to earlier

    traditions. Design shows 17th Century Safavid

    influences but too stylized and geometricized.

    Design reminiscent of interlacing lattice covers field

    on blue ground. More 18th century influence in the

    red leaves that form the arabesques. Overall repeat

    Prayer rug with niche and carnations, triple border..

    Woven in opposite direction from the orientation of

    the niche, which means it was really woven to be

    used as a prayer rug. Made for domestic use. Late

    wool pile. Low knot count. Turkish knot. Some good

    older colors. Floral stalks in niche related to Ladik

    prayer rugs.

    borders nice example of this design type.

    Turkey, Central Anatolia. Kirshehir or Kula?Cotton

    warp and weft, wool pile. Turkish symmetrical knot.

    Woven opposite to the niche so it was made for use

    and not to sell. Cultural integrity.Very poor

    condition overall. Much worn. Lots of restoration.

    Central niche with floral units repeated at sides and

    central floral stalk. Multiple borders of equal

    emphasis. 19th century date more likely. Niche has

    carnation border.

    Center has eight (8) large cartouches down the

    vertical length of the rug. Four (4) border widths,

    largest width has zigzag pattern in red and blue

    surrounded by conventionalized flowerheads. Border

    at one end with stylized trees in pentagons. Colors

    are muted shades of yellow, blue, red, pink, white,

    and dark brown.

    Saf - eight prayer niches perpendicular to warp

    direction. Four borders. Largest border with red

    zigzag pattern enclosing conventionalized flower

    heads or rosettes. Turkey. Central Anatolia. Wool

    warp, red wool wefts, wool pile.Turkish symmetrical

    knot. On either side of alternate niches is a pitcher

    motif symbolic of ritual cleansing before prayer.

    Each niche has different color. Borders unify the

    whole. Pentagons at top end were squashed down to

    fit a specific size. They represent lappets otherwise

    made of leather or applique and used as cushion

    covers.

    Overall pattern of oblique square grid with

    geometric arrangelemnt of nine squares each with a

    differenet colored center. Central square has a

    different color in each grouping. Use of algorithmic

    color throughout to create diagonal banding from

    lower right to upper left. Caucasus, Verneh style.

    Design more related to textile production and

    commercial carpet interests rather than on older

    Persian rug traditions. One of the most tightly

    knotted of Persian rug traditions. Allows for many

    curvilinear design elements. Pink silk warps, white

    cotton ground wefts, wool pile. Asymmetrical

    knots.Depressed warps.

    white stlylized geometric arrow shapes, flowers, and

    other motifs forming a large center rectangle and

    borders.

    Caucasus. 19th century.

    Supplementary weft wrapping. Three medallion

    type. Each medallion set within a rectangle. Blue

    ground on which each medallion is set. Each

    medallion is different in color and pattern. Main

    border composed of units of four leaves, repeated

    with additional motifs. Outermost border has wave

    motif. Quadrupeds in each corner of each rectanlge.

    Highly stylized and geometric. Edges in poor repair.

    Very worn. Several phases of old restoration,

    probably done in the Caucasus. Dyes look mostly

    natural except for possible purple at ends, which is

    only visible on the reverse. Remnants of original

    warp fringe. Some red primary wefts. Barber pole

    warps - light and dark yarns plied together. All wool.

    wefts. Nested diamonds with stepped or serrate

    edges. Overall diamond repeat pattern cut off at the

    edges. Serrattion is a function of low knot density.

    Exhibition potential high, teaching potential high.

    Cultural and historical significance high. Could be

    shown with the film "Gabbeh" and used as point of

    departure for discussion.
