derivative of Safavid prototypes. Stepped diamond,

yellow, orange. Diagonally striped outer border with

small diamonds inside. Some loss of color at top

end. 19th century. Condition problems but was once

a very nice example. Keep unless one in better

between pile rows. Northwest Iran. Sarouk. Late

19th century. Made for export. Commercial grade.

Medium high quality. Pretty good condition overall.

Not original edge finishes. Persian asymmetrical

knot. Layered central medallions with floral

ornamenton dark blue field. Largest medallion (or

central field, depending on how the design layout is

read) is green. Good quality standard Persian rug for

export. Size and proportion definitely for western

export. Some evidence of repair.

Iran, late 19th century; or possibly Bessarabian.

2nd half 19th century.Dealer would have more

familiarity with specifics of the attribution.

Commercial manufacture. Close ties to earlier

traditions. Design shows 17th Century Safavid

influences but too stylized and geometricized.

Design reminiscent of interlacing lattice covers field

on blue ground. More 18th century influence in the

red leaves that form the arabesques. Overall repeat

pattern. No central medallion. Arak, Malayer, or

Sultanabad wove these large commercial carpets.

Medium to poor condition. Edge finish overcast, not

original. Low knot count.

Interlacing pattern. Probably all natural dyes.

Bergama. Very low knot density in relation to other

carpet traditions. Bergama rugs often have low knot

density. Wool warp, red wool weft, wool pile. Edges

not original. Single guilloche outer border. Inner

octagons have an interlace pattern related to 15th

century designs. Eight flaps in the center medallion

have hooked or latchet medallion elements. 19th

century rug with natural dyes, but with much older

design elements.

Turkish rug, Nice blue, brown oxidized. Nice

original end finish. Color of central medallion

suggests Kirshehir. Early 20th century. Synthetic

dyes. Very poor condition. Melange of regional

styles and motifs. Medium to low level commercial

production. Has an inscription: in central medallion

in Arabic.

Lots of repiling. Yellow wefting indicates Konya

Prayer rug with niche and carnations, triple border..

Woven in opposite direction from the orientation of

the niche, which means it was really woven to be

used as a prayer rug. Made for domestic use. Late

19th or early 20th century. . Wool warp. wool weft,

wool pile. Low knot count. Turkish knot. Some good

older colors. Floral stalks in niche related to Ladik

prayer rugs.

Caucasian, Kazakh. Possibly late 19th but more

likely early 20th century. Kazakh structure: wool

warp, red wool wefts, wool pile. Red wefts variable

in number. Low knot density. Coloration, structure,

borders are Kazak rug style. Central field pattern is

Northwest Persian or eastern Caucasus. Black is

deteriorating. Harshang or Mina Khani pattern.

reflects Steppe prototypes in cut and pieced felt.

Main border has blue ground with stylized floral and

conventional floral scroll. Red and white dotted

guard stripes are called dog tooth or mouse tooth

pattern. Turkish symmetrical knot. Low knot count.

20th century. Wide blue border with Solomon's knot

motif - not really Kufic. Reciprocal outer and inner

border with different colors. Groups of small floral

elements in field, reflected and translated in an

oblique grid. One odd grouping of composite forms.

Wool warp, white wool weft, wool pile.

18th or early 19th century Ghiordes style. Lots of

restoration, especially in the central field. Striped

borders nice example of this design type.

Turkey, Central Anatolia. Kirshehir or Kula?Cotton

warp and weft, wool pile. Turkish symmetrical knot.

Woven opposite to the niche so it was made for use

and not to sell. Cultural integrity.Very poor

condition overall. Much worn. Lots of restoration.

Central niche with floral units repeated at sides and

central floral stalk. Multiple borders of equal

emphasis. 19th century date more likely. Niche has

carnation border.

Long carpet. Flowers in central field with red and

white lines forming an oblique lattice. Light blue

ground switches to dark blue at one end. Synthetic

Center has eight (8) large cartouches down the

vertical length of the rug. Four (4) border widths,

largest width has zigzag pattern in red and blue

surrounded by conventionalized flowerheads. Border

at one end with stylized trees in pentagons. Colors

are muted shades of yellow, blue, red, pink, white,

and dark brown.

Saf - eight prayer niches perpendicular to warp

direction. Four borders. Largest border with red

zigzag pattern enclosing conventionalized flower

heads or rosettes. Turkey. Central Anatolia. Wool

warp, red wool wefts, wool pile.Turkish symmetrical

knot. On either side of alternate niches is a pitcher

motif symbolic of ritual cleansing before prayer.

Each niche has different color. Borders unify the

whole. Pentagons at top end were squashed down to

fit a specific size. They represent lappets otherwise

made of leather or applique and used as cushion

covers.

Possibly sumak dark brown wool/linen plainweave

ground with sumak brocading or weft float brocade

in white, blue, red and blue-green diamond shaped

design composed of highly stylized geometric

flowerheads. Brown fringe at ends.

Verneh technique. Some synthetic dyes. Purple, new

brown).

Weft float brocading or discontinuous

supplementary weft. Flatweave. Knotted fringe.

Original edge finishes. Wool warp, weft, and

supplementary wefts. Otherwise condition is good.

Overall pattern of oblique square grid with

geometric arrangelemnt of nine squares each with a

differenet colored center. Central square has a

different color in each grouping. Use of algorithmic

color throughout to create diagonal banding from

lower right to upper left. Caucasus, Verneh style.

Lattice composed of white squares with red center.

Heavily stylized floral design in center rectangle

surrounded by narrow pink border and a wider

border of white with abstract geometric forms. In

between pink and white border are two (2) smaller

blue borders. Colors: blue, pink, white, green, light

yellow, and brown.

Northwest Iran. Turkish symmetrical knot. Wool

warp, weft, pile. Relatively low knot count for this

type. Late 19th century commercial product - made

for export to the west. White forms in the border are

boteh. Central field with overall repeat of

pinkflowers within a diagonal lattice.

Tightly woven pile rug. Large center rectangle with

white ground with rows of floral bouquets. Border of

red ground with stylized floral design in pink, blue,

yellow, blue-green and white.

West Persian Senna. Zili-sultan repetitve vase

design. Ends and selvages not original. Silk warps,

cotton ground wefts.

Design more related to textile production and

commercial carpet interests rather than on older

Persian rug traditions. One of the most tightly

knotted of Persian rug traditions. Allows for many

curvilinear design elements. Pink silk warps, white

cotton ground wefts, wool pile. Asymmetrical

knots.Depressed warps.

Turkish Rug



Soumak rug in red, blue, light blue, pink, brown,

white stlylized geometric arrow shapes, flowers, and

other motifs forming a large center rectangle and

borders.

Caucasus. 19th century.

Supplementary weft wrapping. Three medallion

type. Each medallion set within a rectangle. Blue

ground on which each medallion is set. Each

medallion is different in color and pattern. Main

border composed of units of four leaves, repeated

with additional motifs. Outermost border has wave

motif. Quadrupeds in each corner of each rectanlge.

Highly stylized and geometric. Edges in poor repair.

Very worn. Several phases of old restoration,

probably done in the Caucasus. Dyes look mostly

natural except for possible purple at ends, which is

only visible on the reverse. Remnants of original

warp fringe. Some red primary wefts. Barber pole

warps - light and dark yarns plied together. All wool.

Finely woven wool rug of predominately red-pink

ground with three diamond medallions at vertical

center. Other colors light blue, light green, red

brown, white. Persian. Senneh. Early to mid 20th

century. Synthetic dyes, running. Red wefts, large

size. Three hooked medallions ona red ground in a

hexagonal field. Four corner quarter medallions with

a light blue green ground. Typical light green

highlights.

Large pile rug of two large central diamond motifs

set within larger intersecting pink-orange diamond

shapes. Large triangular designs on sides in light

blue, white, dark blue.

South Persian, Gabbeh. Nomadic rug.

Fars Province, South Iran. Turkish knot, very low

knot density. Wool warp, wool weft, wool pile. Red

wefts. Nested diamonds with stepped or serrate

edges. Overall diamond repeat pattern cut off at the

edges. Serrattion is a function of low knot density.

Exhibition potential high, teaching potential high.

Cultural and historical significance high. Could be

shown with the film "Gabbeh" and used as point of

departure for discussion.

Beige and brown rug with large rectangular center of

rows of conventionalized scroll flowers.

Colors completely faded on face. Purple still

discernible on reverse. From East Turkestan

Extremely faded. Samarkand type. Chinese c-scroll

lattice.
