What is a Resource Centre?A Resource Centre is a space specially created in an institution that has human as well as material resources required to assist/aid/strengthen the objectives of the institute. Human resources are the experts in various fields identified from different agencies. The material & infrastructural resources may be in the form of working space, equipments, tools, specimens, books, films, internet facilities.

The Origin of Teachers’ Resource Centres• TRCs originated in Britain in 1960s for the

Professional Development of Teachers. They provided In-service training to the teachers besides providing a range of material resources.

• In India, TRCs were set up in Delhi, Madras, Bombay, calcutta and Pune in seventies and early eightees. Each TRC has been unique in its focus and way of functioning.

Objectives of setting up a Resource Centre

• To equip the teachers to take a proactive stance towards teaching.

• To negotiate learning outcomes in classroom that harbour learner diversity.

• To equip the teachers with knowledge about children and how they learn.

• To support the teachers with access to knowledge and tools of cultural appreciation and critical enquiry.

• To help the teachers in their ongoing professional development.

Resource Centres in Delhi

1. Ramjas Teacher’s Centre – established by the British Council in 1979.

2. The Educational Planning Group – Xaviers, set up by the Jesuit Education in 1978

3. The Springdales Teachers Centre –set up in 1980 for Science, Mathematics and Language Teaching

Characteristics of Resource CentresResource Centres in DIETS should have the following characteristics: -

- Encourage Interactions among different stakeholders

- Create synergy among all other agencies doing similar work

- Provide Non-Threatening Environment- Encourage Reflective Thinking- Be Inclusive in nature and- Be Self Sustaining

Setting up the Resource Centre in ‘Theatre & Films in education’ at DIET RN

The methodology focused on simultaneous development of

• Human Resources, • Infrastructural Resources and • Production & Collation of Material Resources.

Development of Human Resources• Setting up of bench marks – Play at Shri Ram

Centre “ Jis Lahore Nahin Dekhiya oh Jamiya hi nahin” and “Kitabon Mein Halchal” at SEP Schools.

• Collaboration with R.K.Ashram, NBT, NSD, CFSI, CCRT, Vigyan Prasar and NCERT

• Training of ETE Trainees in Theatre, Puppetry & Screening of Films in schools

• School Based In-Service Training of Teachers• Celebration of Pustak Utsav in SEP Schools

Development of Infrastructural Resources• Allotting a hall with seating capacity of 300

persons for the Resource Centre• Purchase of camera and related material for

film production• Setting up of Film Screening Facility and

installation of Public Address System• Display of Puppets, Costumes, Masks etc. to

create a theatrical ambience

Procurement/Development of Resource Material

• Purchase of films from CIET and CFSI• Purchase of books from NBT & other agencies• Development of Films – Film on Suraj Kund Mela,

Drama in Education, Films in Education, and Pustak Utsav

• Development of Puppets, costumes for role plays/dramas based on the textbooks

• Development of a books on “Art of Puppetry” and “Creative Teaching through Theatre & Cinema”.

Getting Feedback • Interviews of people at different levels are being

conducted to get a feedback of the activities of the Resource Centre.

• Experts in the field of Theatre & Films, Teacher Educators, School Principals, Teachers, ETE trainees, and School students are being interviewed and a film is being developed based on these interviews. This feedback will help in deciding further course of action.

Plan for the Next Year

Art Integrated Learning project is being taken in collaboration with NCERT.
