Seussical Sermons"Seussical Sermons: The Gospel According to Dr. Seuss" is the title I have given to a ten week series of sermons beginning this Sunday and ending on November 11. I heard a comment this past week to the effect that Dr. Seuss is the William Shakespeare of children's literature. I'm sure there are some who might disagree, but having announced this sermon series, I have been overwhelmed, stunned even at the number of people who have expressed interest because they first read Dr. Seuss as a child and his "lessons" have stayed with them a lifetime. Indeed, as anyone who has read Dr. Seuss knows, his wonderful books filled with enchanting art, made-up words, and indelibly intriguing characters, speaking in hilarious rhythms, teach timeless truths of how to relate to our neighbor. Theodor Seuss Geisel, Dr. Seuss, was not a moralist as such, but one who addressed ticklish daily issues to issues of war and race and always, inclusion/exclusion. His stories can be enjoyed at face value, which is often how children first encounter him, only to learn later that a seed of wisdom has been planted that grows and bears fruit the more we hear and the older we get. The Value of Sunday School (last of three-part series)

Who cares about Sunday School?

What does it matter if Bible study happens on Sunday morning?

Should Sunday School be included as a part of the characteristics of the innovative congregation:

One that is able to dialogue. Sunday School is a place where honest conversation that includes all ages and differing perspectives can easily happen.

One that is literate. Sunday School studies the Bible and other books to supplement and inform our understanding while encouraging personal reading.

One that is healthy. Sunday School develops trusting relationships as participants share their ideas, visions for congregation, and hope for the future.

One that is “missional.” Sunday School reinforces the idea that every disciple, not just institutional leaders, is called to live as an agent of God’s mission.

One that can translate their values and beliefs into action. “The gathered community of believers must be able to put their theology into practice.” Faith is not only about what one learns but must expand to include how one lives in relation to the world around them. Sunday School can provide opportunity for members to find a place of mission both as a group (class mission projects) and in their individual lives (caring for neighbors and becoming aware of the needs in the world around them.)

Men’s Bible Study ReturnsFor you early morning risers, why not join a group of men who meet every Monday morning at 6:45am for study and a light breakfast? This would be a perfect time to join as we are beginning a new study using the book Is Life Fair by Charles Poole. While we may or may not answer Poole’s ques-tion, the lively discussion we have each week offers some support for one another as we try to live this “fair or not-so-fair life.” Join us each Monday in the Parlor for the study, the tacos, and fellowship.

Piano Recital by John HudspethYou are invited to attend a piano recital given by one of our members, John Hud-speth. He is a member of the Steakley Class and is a faithful attendee at worship each week. He plays for the Steakley Class when Ginger Young is absent and at-tributes his learning of hymns to Ginger. The recital will be at 2pm on Sunday, October 7, in the Sanctuary, where John will play the Yamaha Concert Grand and one piece on the Casavant. You will hear several of the important composers in music history including J. S. Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Grieg and Rachmaninov. Included are Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring, Moonlight Sonata, and Vocalise in E Minor. The Vocalise is dedicated to the memory of Mary Guemple who John heard playing this piece in 2008 in the FBC Sanctuary. John has been diligent in his practice and is doing a lovely job on each piece, one of which is an improvisation on a fugue based on Bach’s works. Sunday, October 7th at 2 pm in the Sanctuary.

Organ Music in SeptemberA Toccata (from Italian toccare, “to touch”) is a piece of music, typically written for a keyboard or plucked string instrument, in free style that often features sections of brilliant, virtuosic passages. The Toccata from Symphony for Organ No. 5 by Charles-Marie Widor is among the most well known toccatas, but toccatas have been around since the 16th century, and they are still being written today.

Our Organist, Dr. David Weigle, is going to feature some of these exciting composi-tions for Opening and Closing Voluntaries during the month of September. You’ll hear toccatas from the Baroque, Romantic, and Modern eras by such composers as Rutter, Butler, Prizeman, Pachelbel, Mushel, Ginastera, Bach, and Reger. So, come just a little early and stay a few extra minutes at the end of the service to hear these exciting pieces. (But you’ll have to wait until Easter to hear the Widor again!)

This Sunday, September 9, David Weigle is out of town on business with his full-time job and David Cappolino will grace the organ bench. The two Davids are life-long friends and David C. is our receptionist, Karen Cappolino’s husband. But, he will be back on September 16 with more Toccatas.

Habitat for Humanity Faith Build Set for September 29“When you give to someone in need, God repays you twice over.” - Rosa Randall, Austin Habitat Homeowner

Safe and stable homes are the foundation of successful families and communities. But owning a home is not possible for many of our neighbors. More than 25% of the city’s workforce earns less than $13.50 an hour. About 36% of Austin residents earn less than $34,550 a year, or 50% of Median Family Income.

As poverty has increased, housing costs have soared. In the past ten years, the median value of a single-family home has increased nearly 90% to $240,000. The average monthly rent for a three bedroom apartment is $1,160. Only 35% of renter households can afford such rents without being cost burdened

As a result of the affordable housing crisis in our community, many families live in overcrowded, deteriorating apartments in crime-ridden neighborhoods. Most of these families are spending the majority of their income on housing, and have little money remaining to pay for other basic necessities, such as food, healthcare, and clothing. Loss of a job or any unexpected expenses, such as a high medical bill, could mean an inability to make rent, forcing families to live in unstable transitional housing or worse...on the streets.

This fall we’ll bring people of all faiths together to build a better Austin. If you believe that everyone deserves a simple, decent and affordable place to live, we invite you to pick up a hammer and help us create change. Join with us and be a part of ending the cycle of poverty housing in our community. Together we can change lives.
