The Modern Seven Wonders of the World 1. Taj Mahal Taj Mahal is a mausoleum in Agra, India on the banks of the river Yamuna. It is one of the most beautiful buildings of the world and it is a symbol of endless love. It's made of very special marble which can change colour. On bright daylight it looks white, in the morning it becomes pink and on a moonlight night metallic. The mausoleum has a central hall with acoustics and eight-side rooms. Inside the mausoleum are the tombs of Shah and his wife. The marble walls have inlaid semi-precious stones. 2.Christ the Redeemer Christ the Redeemer is a giant statue built from 1922 to 1931. It was designed and built by the Brazilian architect and engineer Heitor da Silva Costa. The French sculptor Paul Landowski also helped build the statue and they received donations from catholics. It's 38m tall and and its arms stretch 28m wide. Through the years it suffered a lot of damage and has become one of the seven wonders as the years passed.

of the World

2.Christ the Redeemer

3. Chichen Itza

Chichen Itza is a huge town, made of stone

where Mayans did a lot of rituals. It was discovered by Christophur Columbus in Yucatan Mexico. Chichen Itza means "at the mount of the well Itza".The place was used for astronomical sciences and calender. In those times there wasn't much water and the Mayans used to use the water from one lake in Chichen Itza called The Sacred Cenote. The human bones and gold which were found there show that ancient people used the lake for religious rituals in which they made sacrifices.

4.The Great Wall of China The construction of The Great Wall of China began in the 4th century BC. Over the next 2300 years more than 20 Chinese dynasties worked to make it stronger and to create the largest facility for military use in the world. The Quing Dynasty and Han Min built the largest contribution (more than 6000km). A section of the wall in the Gansu province may disappear in the next 20 years. Now the wall is one of the new seven wonders and is visited by thousands of tourists.

5.The Colosseum

This Roman ampitheatre is built of concrete and stone. It's nearly two thousand years old and was used for violent gladiator games. It was the longest amphitheatre of the Roman Empire and it's one of the greatest works of the Roman architecture. In 2007 the building complex was included among the new seven wonders of the world.

6. Petra

The ancient town of Petra is carved into the rock walls of sandstone of one canyon in

the desert. More than 2000 ago former Nabateans arrived in Jordan and turned the desert area into a rich capital city. It took them four centuries to do that. Now that glorious place is one of the new seven wonders and it attracts more than half million people per year.

7. Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is a small city built by the Incas in the fifteenth ventury.The city is located in the present day city of Peru on the Andes.The other name of Machu Picchu is "the Lost City of the Incas".The town was found in 1911 by the American archaeocologist Hiram Bingam. In Machu Picchu there are about 200 structures. It is a mystery how Incas transported the huge boulders to the top of the mountain to built the city.

1)The Lighthouse of Alexandria: In what country is the lighthouse? How was the lighthousedestroyed? The lighthouse is in Egypt, and it was destroyed by an earthquake (answer found in pin).

2) The Temple of Zeus: How tall is Zeus, and what materials was he made from? 40 feet high,and made of gold, ebony, and ivory. (First answer: external link. Second answer: in pin)

3) The Great Pyramids: What are the names of the three pyramids, and how tall is the tallestone? What is a necropolis? Cheops, Khafre, and Menkaure (must click on actual structure to find names). The tallest one, Cheops, is 455.5 feet tall (in external link). A necropolis is a cemetery, or an ancient burial ground (can search dictionary or Dictionary.com for answer).

4) The Hanging Gardens of Babylon: How do the plants in the Hanging Gardens staycontinuously green? To keep the gardens green, the design had “streams of water emerging from elevated sources flow down sloping channels” (external link).

5) The Temple of Artemis: Who was the god Artemis? When the temple was again rebuilt anddeserted, what was the remaining marble used to build? Artemis is a Greek Goddess and twin of Appollo. The remaining marble was used to build new buildings, many of them churches (both answers on external link).

6) The Mausoleum of Halicarnasus: What is a Mausoleum? Who was buried there? Why wasthe structure built? A Mausoleum is a tomb (answer can be found using dictionary/Dictionary.com or from inferred information). Mausolus Mausollos was buried there with his wife, Queen Artemisia (in pin). The mausoleum was built to bury the two royal bodies (inferred information).

7) The Colossus of Rhodes: What was the statue made of? What did the statue symbolize forthe Mediterranean people? The statue was made of bronze, and symbolized the defeat of Demetrios (external link).

How many feet is 553.33 meters? About 1, 815 feet tall (use Google conversions, or just type in Google search bar). 3) The Empire State Building: During what years was the Great Depression? How many steps and how many windows does this building have? The Great Depression was from 1929-1939 (Google search). The building has 1,860 steps and 6,500 windows (external link). 4) The Golden Gate Bridge: Why is it named the Golden Gate Bridge? Why was it painted the color “international orange”? It was named the Golden Gate Bridge after the straight that the bridge spans, and is painted international orange to blend in with the setting (both answers in external link). 5)The Itaipu Dam: On which two country borders was the dam built? How much rock was moved to construct the dam? The border is between Brazil and Paraguay (video, between :01 and :05), and 50 million tons of rock were moved (external link). 6) Delta Works: What is the Rijkswaterstaat? In the present day, the wall is open for the public (both answers in external link). 3) Petra: What is a monastery? What kind of rock was the ancient city carved from? A monastery is a place of residence occupied by a group of people who are living under religious vows, most commonly monks (dictionary/Dictionary.com or Google search). The rock is called “live” rock (in pin). 4) Christ the Redeemer: In what country was this statue built, and on which mountain? Why

was it built? This statue was built in Brazil on the Corcovado Mountain. It was built to symbolize the Brazilians dedication to Catholicism (both answers in external link). 5) Machu Picchu: How many square miles is the hidden city?
