OLPH History, Mission Statement, Vision Statement and Core Values

Matthew 28:18-20: The Commissioning of the Disciples

Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go,

therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of

the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always,

until the end of the age.”

Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish has a rich, black cultural history. From its formation in 1920, the Black

Catholics of Anacostia contributed to its development and growth through their sacrifices of time, talent, skills and funds to provide a parish plant of their own. Thus, the

uniqueness of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish places it in a leadership position to interact with other Black and non-

black parishes in utilizing the gifts of Black spirituality through music, dance, education, and special action.

MISSION STATEMENT: We, the people, of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish, therefore, acknowledge that our Pastoral Mission is to proclaim Christ and teach the “Good News”, to worship and bear witness in the community, to love and serve as Jesus commanded, and to preserve and share our rich Black heritage.

VISION STATEMENT: “A Roman Catholic church that is actively visible in the Community, shares its spirituality through fellowship, and is committed to serving God.”

CORE VALUES BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS: We will always speak the truth, respect the opinions and roles of all parishioners, and value each person, always maintaining Christian charity in all of our actions.

SPIRITUAL GROWTH: We will seek to increase the understanding of our Catholic faith and expand our spiritual growth by participating in and supporting charitable and spiritual activities, in addition to attending Mass.

STEWARDSHIP: We will become involved in church activities and commit our time, talent and treasures.

INCLUSION: We will be open and inviting by extending ourselves to all by sharing in our parish life; thereby, reaffirming our vision of being actively visible in the community.

LEGACY: We will preserve our rich Black cultural history by respecting the past, continuing in service and faith in the present, and committing to the future of OLPH.

Quote for the Week

"Living in Christ is the life of victory."

Be sure to read the write-up in the back of the bulletin for National Parent’s Day!! Wednesday, July 29th: Today is the Feast of St. Martha, sister of St. Mary Magdalene and St. Lazarus. We find her in the Scriptures three times, twice directly and once indirectly. In the first instance (Purgative Way) Martha questions Jesus about her sister, who was sitting listening at the Lord’s feet while Martha was busy preparing the meal in the Gospel of St. Luke. In the second (Illuminative Way) we find her questioning Jesus about the death of her brother, Lazarus, in St. John's Gospel, where she comes to a deeper faith in the divinity of Christ, much like the example of the Samaritan woman. The third instance (Unitive Way) is a reference to Jesus, shortly before the Holy Week, when Our Lord had supper at the house of Lazarus along with Martha and Mary (John 12:1-2). He then stayed as their guest there that night. Like St. Martha, we should have the humility to face our own defects and then fight against them. Afterwards, Our Lord will illuminate our souls showing the way He chose for us to follow, and then, we will start to be one with Him, that is, united with Him. This mystical union is a pre-taste of the eternal happiness we will have in Heaven where He will be “our reward exceedingly great.”

Thursday, July 30th:

10:30 am LOC Food Pantry – 3P Friday, July 31st: Feast of St. Ignatius of Loyola, Spanish San Ignacio de Loyola, baptized Iñigo, (born 1491, Loyola, Castile [Spain]—died July 31, 1556, Rome [Italy]; canonized March 12, 1622. St. Ignatius of Loyola was a Spanish priest and theologian who founded the Jesuit order in 1534 and was one of the most influential figures in the Counter-Reformation. Known for its missionary, educational, and charitable works, the Jesuit order was a leading force in the modernizing of the Roman Catholic Church.

Like the person who found the buried treasure and the merchant who acquired

the pearl of great price, we seek to find the signs of the kingdom of heaven in our

lives. In fact, we even work to bring about God’s kingdom in our actions and in our words. We pray that our family values reflect our pursuit of the kingdom of heaven. As Jesus’ disciples, we place

everything we value in the service of the pursuit of the Kingdom of God. As you gather as a family, talk about what your

family values. Make a list together of those things that your family considers most

important, such as family, friends, faith, trust, and love. Place this list before you as you read today’s Gospel in its shorter

form, Matthew 13:44-46. In these parables, Jesus teaches us that it is worth giving up even valuable things in order to possess the kingdom of heaven. Look at the list your family made and talk about how these things are important to the kingdom of heaven. What has your family given up

to make these values important in your life? As Jesus’ disciples, we place

everything we value in the service of the pursuit of the Kingdom of God. Pray

together for God’s kingdom by praying the Lord’s Prayer.

Please contact the parish office to update your record with any name changes, address

changes, new email address or new phone numbers or with any additions to the family. If you have a family member listed as a dependent and they are now married or self-sufficient please let us know as they need to register on their own.

DISCIPLESHIP

The Catechism of the Catholic Church defines a disciple this way: “The disciple of Christ must not only keep the faith and live on it, but also profess it, confidently bear witness to it, and spread it”. Catholic discipleship refers to a committed approach to living a Christian life within the Catholic Church. The term is generally applied to

Catholics who sincerely attempt to live according to the instructions provided by Jesus in the New Testament. The U.S. Catholic bishops have described disciples as

those who "make a conscious, firm decision, carried out in action, to be followers of Jesus Christ no matter …

Discipleship equips the Christian with God’s Word, prayer, doctrine, worship, encouragement,

and service.”

PARISHIONER TIDBITS

What is intercessory prayer? Intercessory prayer is

where we make requests to God on behalf of other people.

Who should we pray for? The bible exhorts us to

intercede for all types of groups and people: church leaders, those in authority (managers, politicians, and anyone in a position of power in society); those who are ill; family and friends; enemies and those who mistreat or persecute us; all people should be prayed for.

ENTERING THE HOSPITAL? Parishioners planning to enter the hospital are encouraged to receive the Sacrament of the Sick prior to admission. Because of privacy laws, hospitals no longer notify parishes of a parishioner’s stay. Please notify the Rectory of the name of person, hospital and room number, also when the person returns home.

Parishioners who are sick or homebound and unable to attend Mass on Sunday may request to receive the Eucharist. Even if you are ill for a short period of time you are most welcome to receive a home visit. Please call the Parish Office to make arrangements.

God Truly Answers Prayers O Lord our God, thank You that you know our every

need. You have promised that you will give strength to the weary and increase the power of the weak. Please help us to draw on your strength as we feel weak, to receive your healing when we feel pain and to know your comfort in the midst of our distress. You are the

God of endurance and encouragement. Help us to live in perfect harmony with you and glorify you with our

thoughts, words and deeds. We pray that You will lay your healing hands upon all those who are sick. We beg You to have compassion on all those who are suffering so that they may be delivered from their

unfortunate circumstances. In Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

HAPPY NATIONAL PARENT’S DAY

Every year on the fourth Sunday of July, the nation honors the vital role parents serve in their families and communities. National Parents’ Day was created in 1994 by President Bill Clinton to recognize, uplift and support parents. This year, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, home is an extra special place and parents are being tested in unprecedented ways.

Why It’s So Hard Parenting Teens Parenting is tough, and parenting teens is even tougher. You’re trying to strike the balance between holding on and letting go. Your child may be experimenting with drugs or alcohol or struggling in school. And you probably aren’t getting hugs or words of thanks on National Parents’ Day. Here are just a few challenges confronting parents of teens:

Teens take risks and resist rules, but their judgment isn’t fully developed yet.

Peer groups become more important as they push to differentiate themselves from their parents.

Preparation for independence leads some teens to be highly critical of their parents, which can make parents feel rejected and unappreciated.

Parents grieve the loss of their younger, more attentive and obedient child.

Teens may turn out different than what their parents imagined. It’s a process laden with frustration before reaching a place of acceptance.

Families have to negotiate new rules. Teens push for more freedom while parents struggle to maintain control to keep their kids safe.

The list of challenges goes on, but there are also positives. Teens are explorers, figuring out their passions, interests and ideals. Your influence is still incredibly important – research shows over three-quarters of teens value their parents’ opinions over friends’ when making major decisions. You’re watching your child grow into a young adult, a transition that means they’ll be a capable, independent adult someday.

14 Signs You’re Doing a Good Job You won’t get it right all the time, but chances are you’re getting it right a lot of the time. According to the Pew Research Center, most parents feel they’re doing a good job raising their children. Here are a few signs you’re headed in the right direction with your parenting:

Even though your kids spend a lot time in their rooms, they also interact with you and their siblings.

You know and generally approve of their friends.

Teachers comment on your child’s good character (traits like kindness and compassion), even if they don’t have a perfect report card.

You make memories as a family.

They do their chores, as least some of the time.

You support their interests – even if they aren’t the ones you would choose – and enjoy watching them achieve goals and try new things.

You generally respect their privacy.

They know you’re there for them if they want to talk, share feelings or get advice, and they occasionally take you up on it.

They show a variety of emotions in front of you, including sadness, disappointment and anger.

You let them make decisions and learn from their mistakes, but get involved when it comes to important topics.

You say yes and give them space when you can, but say no when needed and follow through with appropriate consequences.

You say sorry when you make mistakes and talk about how you wish you had handled the situation.

You disagree sometimes, but you don’t hold grudges and talk through issues when needed.

When your child is struggling, you know it’s usually not about you.

Ways to Celebrate National Parents’ Day National Parents’ Day is a time to feel appreciated for your years of dedication. For some, this means spending time with the kids. For others, this means taking a break from family and doing something special just for you. Here are a few ideas for ways to celebrate this day:

Do a favorite activity with your kids, such as hiking, going on a picnic or watching a movie

Tell your kids how glad you are to be their parent

Meet with your family to set goals for the week, month or year ahead, talking through bucket list items and dreams in addition to responsibilities and commitments

Ask your spouse/partner and kids to make dinner Parenting is one of the hardest jobs in the world. You’ve nurtured, sacrificed, taught and guided your kids even as the world keeps shifting. You’ve endured sleepless nights and nonstop worries. In addition to questioning your kids, your partner and all the well-meaning advice you receive, you’ve questioned yourself. This month, give yourself some recognition. Parenting is a marathon, made up of sprints and hurdles, and you’re making it – one day at a time.
