Austin State University, has been elected co-chair of Hillel International’s Student Cabinet. The 18-member Student Cabinet serves as the student advisory body for the Hillel movement and works closely with Hillel International’s board of directors. Gordon was elected to the Student Cabinet one year ago and successfully ran for the co-chair position last month. Rabbi Kenny Weiss, Houston Hillel’s executive director, provides profes- sional support for SFA Hillel. Rabbi Weiss recently spoke with Gordon about the Student Cabinet and her local involvement with SFA Hillel. Rabbi Weiss: Why is the Student Cabinet’s work important? Gordon: The Student Cabinet’s work is important because it allows the student voice to be heard in such a wide and large organization, and it allows us to continue growing the Global Hillel Student Movement that we, on the Student Cabinet, have been working really hard to get started this year. During my past year on the Student Cabinet, I have really come to see how much impact student voices and perspectives have to the Hillel professionals. I have attended many meetings where I felt that my story was being heard and truly taken to heart. For the Global Hillel Student Movement, the cabinet has been working hard to kick- start it this year by working on a Slack workspace for student leaders, hosting leadership summits and student presidents’ cohorts and helping to host “Hillel at Home” events. The Global Hillel Student Movement is really what is going to start bringing local Hillel’s students together to support each other and unify like never before. Rabbi Weiss: What does it mean to you to be the Student Cabinet co-chair, coming from a school with such a small Jewish population? Gordon: Being Cabinet co-chair, coming from SFA, a small school with a student-led Hillel, is very daunting, but extremely exciting at the same time. Initially, I debated applying to be co-chair because I had an incorrect notion that Hillel couldn’t benefit from a co-chair like me. I was worried that I wouldn’t have enough to say or that my impact wouldn’t be as great. But, then I realized that embracing people from all walks of life, from all sizes of school, from all types of Hillels, student-led or massive, is exactly why I love Hillel and why I love the Student Cabinet. My voice is important and brings a unique perspec- tive to Hillel. A little respectful rebellion gave me the ability to be on the Student Cabinet and it is the fire behind why I love Hillel and why I think that I can make an impact as co-chair. Rabbi Weiss: Reflect on the direc- tion your life has taken because you engaged with Hillel. Gordon: Engaging in Hillel has completely changed what I thought my college experience would be and what my plans are looking forward to the future. I made the conscious choice when choos- ing colleges to go somewhere without a thriving Jewish community, but when I found that I was not the only one at SFA that yearned for a Jewish connection, I jumped on it. Ever since then, Hillel has given me some of the best conversations, friends, mentors, opportunities and a new outlook on where my life is going. I realized that I have a lot of passion and love for Judaism, and I realized that I can and want to funnel that passion into my prospective career. n Rabbi Kenny Weiss and Jade Gordon at the 2020 AIPAC Policy Conference.
