1. Introduction The SFC is a new single measurement unit that compliments our current analyzer & controller offering. The SFC is available as a single measurement unit with or without optional control functionality. The SFC is also available as a flow proportional controller or a compound loop controller. The instrument is ideally suited for a wide range of analytical and control solutions in the following main markets:

Potable water Industrial process water Swimming pool water Waste water

2. Description of equipment The SFC electronic platform is a single parameter controller that is available in the following versions: a) flow proportional controller (replacing the SCU) b) compound loop controller with an external measurement input (replacing the PCU) c) single series measurement analyzer with feedback control capability (replacing the MFA analyzer range) d) single series measurement analyzer with compound loop control, which offers a new, low cost single measurement control instrument.

The main benefits:

Accurate measurement and control in a single

instrument

All currently available measurement sensors can be utilized with the SFC

The same look and easy operation as offered in the

MFC instrument

Robust and fault-tolerant design SD card slot for extended data collection and

convenient storage of the configuration

Integrated bus connectivity and integrated data management for long term data logging with data export option to spreadsheet software

The SFC support all wetsides and sensors currently available with the MFC instrument, as well as the Micro/2000 & DEOX/2000 wetsides which are in the redesigning process currently. The SFC platform can be expanded to communicate with additional SFC and MFC electronics via a CAN sensor/actuator bus thereby greatly expanding its functionality (pH corrected chlorine measurement is an example where two SFC electronics can be combined). The user interface is similar to that of the MFC electronics and includes a user friendly configuration menu as well as a grahic display with trend graph capability. Communication to other devices is possible via the RS 485 bus and will be expanded to include a communication card for Profibus, Profinet and Modbus.

Benefits:

n Permits the use of the DEPOLOX® 5 potentiostatic sensor as well as all other sensors currently available in our sensor portfolio

n Four different control modes can be selected

n Measurement and control of individual or multiple parameters when combined using a CAN sensor/actuator bus

n Simple configuration and operation

n Easy data connection to SCADA systems and Web technology

GeneralThe Wallace & Tiernan® SFC series of instrumen- tation provides for the continuous measurement and control of a wide variety of water quality parameters. As a single input device, the SFC unit can be used to monitor any one of a number of different measurement technologies and perform a related control function suited to the specific application. The SFC system can control automatic v-notch positioners in gas feed systems, such as the V10kTM and V2000TM systems, or automatic stroke length positioners and variable speed drives in dosing pump systems to maintain a setpoint concentration. For multiple measurement applications, the MFC analyzer/controller is available.

Typical applicationsn Potable water treatmentn Waste water treatmentn Cooling water circuitsn Industrial and process water treatment n Swimming pools

FeaturesThe SFC analyzer/controller is a modular system consisting of a wall or panel-mounted electronic module, a flow cell module and a plug-and-play sensor measuring module. The SFC unit can be configured as an analyzer only, with over 10 different measurement choices, a set-point or flow proportional controller or a combined analyzer/ controller. The additional control function offers an easy, software selectable range of control modes from flow proportional to compound loop with “fuzzy-logic” auto-tuning. Utilizing the CAN sensor/actuator bus allows communication between electronic modules if more than one parameter is being measured. This can be particularly useful for pH-corrected free chlorine measurement with the DEPOLOX® 5 flow cell and a pH sensor.

An example of a SFC system: SFC pH for individual pH measurement

Flow proportional control

Control optionsBoth flow proportional and compound loop control are available with the SFC. The control mode required should be specified when ordering the equipment. With the wide range of SFC versions available, nearly all conceivable water treatment applications, including single feedback closed-loop control, can be monitored and controlled.

The SFC system is available with the following functionality

Sensor selectionThe portfolio of measurements includes the following parameters, and where appropriate, the supporting measurement modules are depicted.

n Free chlorine (DEPOLOX® 5, Micro/2000® & Membrane) n Total chlorine (Micro/2000® & Membrane) n Chlorine dioxide (DEPOLOX® 5, Micro/2000® & Membrane) n Ozone (DEPOLOX® 5, Micro/2000® & Membrane) n Potassium permanganate (DEPOLOX® 5 & Micro/2000®) n pH value n Redox (ORP) n Fluoride n Chlorine-sulfite (Deox/2000®)n Conductivity n Temperature n A single measurement with a Milliamp output can also be incorporated.

The application and water quality will determine what measurement module best suits the application;

The DEPOLOX® 5 measurement module uses the potentiostatic bare electrode technology that is fast acting to a change in chlorine concen- tration and therefore well suited for disinfection control. It incorporates continuous hydromechanical cleaning of the sensor. (For further measurement module details please refer to WT.050.585.001.PS.)

The Micro/2000® and Deox/2000® measurement modules are also potentiostatic bare electrodes that can incorporate the addition of buffer and incorporate hydro-mechanical cleaning of the sensor. The Micro/2000 and Deox/2000 measurement modules can be used in poor quality water without fouling. The Micro/2000 module offers unmatched accuracy of chlorine measurements down to one part per billion. The Deox/2000 module is utilized for dechlorination chemistry measurements. (For further measurement module details please refer to WT.050.585.003.PS and WT.050.585.004.PS.)

The membrane measurement module utilizes membrane covered electrodes with the VariaSensTM flow cell and is the least affected by water supply chemistry variations. The membrane covered sensor will respond slower to disinfectant changes. (For further measurement module details please refer to WT.050.585.005 to 008.PS.)

For further technical details, please refer to the appropriatedocumentation. Separate product information leaflets areavailable for the SFC PC process controller, for the flow proportional control SFC SC, and the individual parameters.

Additional featuresThe CAN sensor/actuator bus allows easy expansion of the SFC functionality by allowing two or more SFC devices to be inter- connected. The CAN sensor/actuator bus allows for a pH compen- sated chlorine measurement or a more complex control scheme such a set-point trim control. A communication slot will allow connection of field bus systems such as PROFIBUS DP or Modbus. The removable SD card available for the SFC and SFC PC allows for data storage as well as back-up of the configuration.

The fuzzy logic compound loop control, which was previously included in the Wallace & Tiernan® PCU process controller, has now been integrated in the SFC PC system. Each measuring system also has an optional integrated controller that can be used with external setpoint selection (as well as with single feedback closed-loop control). Depending on the application, the control parameters can also be used to control actuators such as the V10kTM gas feed system, dosing pumps, or frequency converters. This now also applies to CAN sensor/actuator bus enabled dosing devices.

The flow proportional control SFC SC enables proportionally controlled feed of chemicals used in water treatment and for industrial applications. The dosing capacity of the connected device is controlled automatically, on the basis of a measuring signal, for example an external flow rate measurement, and a configurable dosing factor. Page 14: SFC Product Release - · PDF fileSFC Product Release 1. ... Hach Lange Dr. Kuntze ... SFC SC The trend graph allows for daily data trending that can be extended to 30 days

Integral control functions of the SFC PCThere are four control programs built into the SFC software that are available for controlling one chemical feed parameter. The control output can be used to adjust the V-notch actuator on a chlorinator, or the stroke length actuator on a metering pump, or the speed of a chemical pump motor to maintain an effective treatment process.

Available control types include:

n Flow proportional control to adjust feedrate based on process flow. This type of control typically uses a 0/4 – 20 mA signal from a flowmeter and controls an output that is proportional to the flow. The output can be adjusted by changing the dosage factor either through the keypad and menu or through a remote mA input.

n Feed forward control to adjust the chemical feedrate in proportion to an external measurement input or an input from an optional measurement module in combination of a flow input. A typical example of feed forward control is chemical feed of a dechlorination chemical based on a chlorine residual analysis and treated water flowrate. The chemical feed output is derived by the controller by multiplying the treated water flow by the measurement input and applying a selected dosage factor.

n Single feedback or direct residual closed-loop control to maintain a desired setpoint based on a measured value. The measured signal (either from an external measurement device or an optional measurement module) is compared with an internal setpoint, entered through the keypad or an external setpoint through a remote mA input. The source of the setpoint can be selected via a digital input. Any deviation from the control setpoint initiates a proportional/integral correction to the chemical feed device. The action of this controller can be forward acting (for chlorination) or reverse acting (for dechlorination). This type of control provides a stable residual in applications where the quality of the water varies, but the flow of the treated water is relatively constant.

n Compound loop control to maintain a desired setpoint based on a measured value (either from an external measurement device or an optional measurement module) and a treated water flow input. Compound loop control utilizes a residual setpoint similar to direct residual control but incorporates a flow input in the control algorithm to quickly compensate control for variations in the flow of the treated water. This provides a stable residual regardless of changes in water quality or flow. As an added benefit, this control loop can be selected with an adaption mode for quicker reaction to changes in flow. This control algorithm includes “fuzzy logic“ which acquires the correct dosage factors for different flow rates and stores them in a look-up table. The SFC controller utilizes this look-up table to adjust control whenever there is a change in the flow rate. This avoids oscillations in the residual level when there is disturbance in the flow, since the controller “knows where to go” before the residual is affected.

FeaturesThe DEPOLOX® 5 flow cell consists of a 3-electrode system utilizing a bare-electrode design which pro- vides a quick response time (90 % change < 20 sec.) with high accuracy (±2 % F.S.) when compared to membrane sensor technology. Hydrodynamic grit cleaning of the electrode surfaces maintains sensi- tivity to extend the intervals between calibrations. Zero point calibration is not necessary. A sample with a constant pH is required, however, the addition of a pH sensor can provide for compensated free chlorine measurement with the suitable electronic package. An integral multi-sensor provides a PT 1000 tempe-rature measurement and monitors sample flow to provide a loss-of-flow alarm contact. The flow cell is supplied with a 1 m (3.3 ft.) screened coaxial cable. Up to three additional sensors can be fitted into the flow cell for measuring other water parameters. DEPOLOX® 5 flow module with plug-in card

Wallace & Tiernan® Analyzers/ControllersConductivity measurement

Water Technologies

Product Sheet

Benefits:

n Accurate, reproducible measurement resistant to interference due to 4-electrode sensor

n Long-term measurement stability due to robust carbon electrodes

n Highest precision and linearity due to optimized cell geometry and standard integrated temperature sensor

n Compatible with all measurements of the MFC and SFC unit series

GeneralElectrical conductivity is a composite parameter representing a measure for the ion concentration of a solution. Ions of salts dissolved in water primarily indicate conductivity. The Wallace & Tiernan® conductivity sensor measuring module is composed of the sensor card for MFC or SFC and the sensor.

Applications range from simple measuring tasks to complex control processes for treating potable and process water, pool water as well as waste water.

Typical applicationsn Measurement and control tasks by potable waterworks and public utilities

n Determination of unspecific pollutants in industrial processes

n Process water monitoring in all water-carrying industrial areas

n Cooling water monitoring

FeaturesThe all-purpose conductivity sensor is equipped with four electrodes and is characterized by its resistance to pollutants and contaminants (e.g. biofilms). This sensor is also easy to clean. In contrast to two- electrode sensors, it features a greater measuring range. Longer maintenance intervals are another advantage. The sensor has an integrated temperature sensor and therefore an automatic temperature compensation feature since conductivity is heavily dependent on temperature. The sensor is inserted into the flow-through adapter. Screw-type connections are available for pressurized flow-through modules. The standard conductivity sensor is equipped with a 0.9 m-long (3.0 ft.) coaxial cable (customized measuring cable). Cables with a length of up to 50 meters (164 ft.) are available as optional accessories.

Product Sheet

Benefits:

n Accurate, reproducible measurement resistant to interference

n Short activation and running-in times

n Suitable for use in water from pH 5 to pH 8.5

n Compatible with all measurements of the MFC and SFC unit series

General The Wallace & Tiernan® fluoride sensor measuring module is composed of the sensor card for the measuring systems MFC or SFC and the fluoride electrode.

Applications range from simple measuring tasks to complex control processes for treating potable and process water. For example, different fluoride compounds such as sodium fluoride (NaF) and sodium silicofluoride (Na

2SiF

6) in an aqueous

solution as well as hydrofluosilicic acid (H2SiF

6) are

used for drinking-water fluoridation. The SFC/MFC systems make it possible to measure fluoride in combination with all of the relevant hygiene compliance parameters.

Typical applicationsn Measurement and control tasks within the scope of adding fluoride by potable waterworks and public utilities

n Periodic sampling of natural and mineral waters

n Processes where fluoride are metered to liquid substances, e.g. to produce toothpaste, porcelain and artificial fertilizer

FeaturesThe fluoride electrode can be used to determine fluoride in aqueous solutions easily and quickly, accurately and economically across a broad concentration range. The fluoride electrode is only installed in non-pressurized flow modules. The standard fluoride electrode is equipped with a 0.9 m-long (3.0 ft.) coaxial cable. Longer cables are available as an optional accessory.
