FU? YWiB serves as the forum for connecting young female professionals and future entrepreneurs with

incredible female leaders in a variety of industries. Through supporting YWiB, you will gain tailored exposure to a key market of prospective clients including junior and senior university students, young professionals and creative entrepreneurs. This is an opportunity for these young women to make a connection with your company, and the values that guide your business. This is also an opportunity to expose your brand to influential professionals from a variety of industries within the Greater Vancouver community. As YWiB is a registered non-profit society, your support will associate your organization with a young and growing NPO in the Vancouver Community.

Our Programs

Project GIVEProject GIVE has participants working in teams to pursue ideas of social change. Guided by mentors and educated through seminars, each team creates their own unique social entrepreneurship project. We equip participants with the skills, education, and resources necessary to create their plans and see them through. Along the way, teams learn from and work with some of the most influential names in social entrepreneurship in BC. To wrap up the program, teams compete against each other and present their projects to a panel of experts that will give each team constructive, comprehensive feedback and they select a winner based on creativity, methodology, and feasibility.

PhilanthropyThe Philanthropy program provides members with various volunteer opportunities at community events which are aligned with YWiB’s values. Past initiatives include assisting the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation with their Get Pink’d Program, preparing holiday care packages for the Greater Vancouver Community Services Society, and volunteering with the Beauty Night Society. This year’s program is already in full swing and includes a partnership with the local non-profit Five Hole for Food which collects food donations for the Canadian Food Bank. Our objective is to build holistic female professionals who see value in helping others and creating a stronger, more united community.

SOUL MentorshipThis program matches female university students with SFU alumni who are highly esteemed professionals in their designated area for a comprehensive nine month mentorship program. Through the help and support of the SFU faculty members and our roster of outstanding professional mentors, we created a mentorship program unlike any other. We place the focus back on the participants of the program and develop workshops that help our mentees build the tools they need to be successful in their respective professions and enable the positive development of long lasting and influential relationships.

IWD is an annual, one day conference for women of all ages and industries to come together to celebrate International Women’s Day. The conference includes a variety of keynote speakers, a panel session featuring women from a range of industries, and an expo which showcases entrepreneurs, start-ups, and not for profit organizations dedicated to women’s rights and advancement.

The 2012 event featured keynote speakers Anna Rice, Canadian Olympic badminton player, and Loretta Cella, life coach and founder of the Passion Foundation. Anna spoke of over-coming obstacles and her inspiring journey to the 2004 and 2008 Summer Olympics. She left the audience with a feeling of inspiration and determination to achieve their own goals, be them athletic or academic. Loretta spoke about personal growth and discovery and how she discovered her passion for helping young women find their strength. Both women were an inspiration to our audience and left lasting impressions.

Our panel session was hosted by SFU Alumni Nira Aurora of the Beat 94.5 and featured speakers Nicole van Zanten of the Vancouver Canucks, Tracey Theemes, financial advisor, Janice Roper of Deloitte, and Lisa Kofod of the VPD. The panel discussed gender issues they have faced in their professions, barriers they have over-come, and offered advice to future generations of young, leading women. Insightful, wise, and at many times entertaining, our panel session was a highlight for many of our audience members.

IWD

? The International Women’s Day Conference presents an opportunity for women of all walks of life to come together to celebrate generational achievements made by everyday women and acknowledge the challenges that persist for women in the working world. Since 1970, women have closed the wage gap between men and women by 14%, from $70 to every $100 a man makes, to $80 for every $100 a man makes. Some of the challenges that perpetuate this discrepancy between men and women include occupational segregation and the undervaluing of women’s work. At the IWD Conference, we encourage our participants to step and think outside of their comfort zones. We teach our attendees about potential opportunities in diverse fields of work and provide them with the confidence to actualize their goals. We achieve this by introducing them to inspirational women who have overcome obstacles in the past and are willing to share their experiences for the betterment of our female generation of leaders. The Conference provides the participants of IWD an opportunity to connect with successful women from a variety of industries, learn how to establish themselves, and come to understand how their unique characteristics and abilities can help them go further in their professional lives.

“IWD 2012 gave me the opportunity to witness an event that excellently celebrates both the successes and empowerment of women and to share their stories to hundreds of inspired individuals. I walked away feeling motivated to overcome challenges from my everyday experiences and my understanding of women’s obstacles in various careers deepened from the informative and interactive panel discussion.

“Attending the International Women’s Day Conference this past March was both a unique and eye opening experience. The expo participants were exceptionally inspirational, sharing stories of flourishing businesses and enterprises that are making a difference in the lives of women, young and old. It inspired me to pursue my own career in entrepreneurship and challenged me to consider what I could do to achieve my own success as well as help others to achieve theirs.

The IWD Conference also allowed me to connect with industry professionals who have since helped me to gain knowledge and experience about my field, an opportunity I would not have otherwise had.”
